Build Your Own Heavy Metal Server
MC68040 writes "Well, this has to be one of the weirdest computer mods I've seen this far. The heavy metal pc takes compting to maybe not a new but different dimension. Computing on wheels, and we're not talking a car computer here. Have a look for yourself, 2x3.2 GHz on wheels, it's sure worth seeing if you're interested in mods."
i dont think they are using that 2x3.2ghz machine because its slashdotted already with only a couple of comments! :-/

Wardriving has a new look, eh?

Since when has this country used intellectual elite as a pejorative term?
Too bad the site's down.

Sorry I can't make a clicky link, I'm not that handy with this stuff
This is the sig that says NI (again)
And the server already in flames. Good job, /. team!
During that upgrade period, the modding scene began to unfold.
Oh puh-leeze. Okay, so I'll admit, there are cool, tasteful, artistic PC case mods, like this one. But most case mods are just plain vulgar, with brightly colored leds all over the place, bits of things that don't go together visually but are supposed to look "fast", or "powerful" etc..., are ugly and frankly are the computer equivalent of that.
Real good case mods are not many.

Not being able to see the pictures since the site was slashdoted, I wonder what the "Heavy Metal" computer on wheels could be? If the site gives any clue I think this "Heavy Metal Computer on Wheels" is nothing more than two dells taped toghether inside a shopping cart.
...could we say that it "Crashed and burned?"
brother, if you wanna karma whore you gotta work at it, copy/paste will not get you mod points. Here ya go, no pics, but you can read the specs and background info etc....

I guess it's more Speed Metal than Heavy Metal.
This gives new meaning to "I roxored your boxor", except that it is your own boxor that is doing the roxoring.
I don't think this was worthy of a /. Probably a front page on a mod site but really it's not that great... Meh, unless you really like mods... lame ones.... Then don't bother loading it
dear case modders, here are a few questions that you may want to consider before modifying your case.
1) will modding my case make my computer fast, more capable, or "better" in any way?
2) will it get me all the hot computer groupie chicks?
3) if i cared about esthetics so much, wouldn't it have been more cost-effective to buy a mac?
4) can my quasi-artistic needs be channeled into better projects?
5) will other people think about me the same as they do when they see a guy driving a civic with a huge wing and fartcan exhaust?
6) is modding my case really just a desparate cry for attention?
7) ???
8) profit!

There's a lot of lag in the system. It stalls and hangs for what feels like a month, but then once it gets working the actual throughput seems nearly instantaneuos despite the high graphical content, as it were.

Think of how much better mod_geeks would do in their careers if they spent as much time making themselves look good as their computers?
SkyNet is well on its way to operational status. Unfortunately, the server can only go as far as its power cord.

I guess thats why it was
When will you people learn that heavy metal (iron maiden, metallica, megadeth, anthrax, etc.) is not the same as a monster truck rally!
Let's face it, todays saturday, late in the day, and we nerds are trying to access a website about a funky computer. We really need to get lives.
;)
Or at least the rest of you do.
I bet they had 9Mb *.bmp images as illustrations onthere.
Eye-candy and slashdot.. it's like candy for the eye but like a vertically challenged ( + gravitational enchanted) person on weight-gain 4000 sitting on santa's lap.
no seriously, I spent ten minutes waiting for this site to load on my works T1 line, finaly gave up, will have to take a look later and see if it is a slow server of if they are feeling the effects of being named on /.

I immediately though of a server packed to the rim with cool comics and illustrations of sexy leather-clad girls a la the magazine.

it is still no match for Omnibot
which would also be a great design. Even cooler if you could have some mini-rc satellite droids (w/ video&audio telemetry) that could come be controlled from the PC. Then, to be able to control the whole thing from the web....
Sounds like my new summer project...

This box was featured on the Screensavers a while ago. A site sleuth more skilled than I might be able to locate more data on the project from the TechTV servers.
i was hoping for a machine that did nothing but play judas priest, iron maiden and NWOBHM stuff.

My boss was looking at Laser cutting machines today (he's an engraver on the side), and I told him to check out the VersaLaser that they gave away for the Screen Savers Case Mod Contest. Well, when I was searching TechTV, I stumbled accross a video of this beast. So I tracked down the website and was showing it to my boss for about a half hour. Needless to say, I come back 4 hours later and find the darn thing on the front page of Slashdot! I'm glad I got to look while it was still up. :-)
The heavy metal pc takes compting to maybe not a new but different dimension.
Does it support spell check?
I thought it meant something like Plutonium or Uranium: Glows in the Dark, too!

"The HTML"?
I don't think they made any attempt to install the Loknar.
That is one hell of an ugly mod. Amazing.
:P
I never thought I would see a mod worse than the "spray foam case" or the "PC in a G4 case" mods.
About the only way people could make an more outrageous mod at this point would be a computer inside a cow pie.
It must have been one of those things that looks good on paper.. Or while drunk at 3am.
I shouldn't have said anything about the cow pie case.. Now some weirdo will make one..

Yawn.
PCs are hideous. Just look at any machine from Dell or Gateway or IBM--it all looks like plastic junk. Then there's Alienware, with their juvenile, garish colors that anyone should be ashamed to have on, under, or anywhere near his desk.
Get a fucking Macintosh, people. They're elegant out of the box without any moronic "case mods." Jesus Christ.
fuck that, I want to put a computer in a case that looks like a MadCat mkII.
I just need about 89 more tons of steel and components.

Im sure people wont be happy hearing this, but damn it, this looks like CRAP!
The Borg cube case i've seen pix of here and there was MUCH cooler. So was the computer built into a toy aircraft carrier, and then always the Millenium Falcon case....(yah, im an old star wars dork from wayyyyy back.......flame all you care to)
Shit, make a case that looks like Cartman from soutpark, fat and round and everything...that would be cool, too. Make a case that looks like the robot from 'forbidden planet' or a Dali painting...BLOW MY TINY MIND PLEASE!
All this is, is shiny and has wheels...whoooopeee doo.....this (like someone else commented) looks like a shopping cart, or maybe a little red wagon.
And it has an analog guage...wOOt! As much as i love analog stuff (like my old ampeg tube amp) i could not even look...one peek at this thing was enough.
ok, let me sink back into the mud where i live in peace, adios~

What a Rip Off.
This machine was actually completed over 6 months ago. Yes, it exists, you can track it's progress on the 2CPU.com Forums. Make sure to bookmark the site, once it's back up it will be well worth a visit. I don't think Corrugated will mind the extra attention. For now, you can read the thread HERE and see some of the specs on it (and people's reactions). No pics, as they're linked to the same poor server. The original thread is HERE. It has a handmade aluminum chassis, wing, go-kart wheels (the racing kind) and a working CPU-load tachometer. And lots of chrome!
clicky for newbs
I'll be the first one to aggree that most case mods look dumb and ugly. They just show a colour cacophony of green PCBs, red PCBs, blue PCBs, copper heatsink there, aluminum over there, coloured cables, and some added leds to make the colour cacophony complete. It looks as artistic as a clown after a tragic makeup accident, or like a bomb attack on a paint factory.
But... "fast"?? How in Odin's name do some ugly led fans and a blue lamp make a computer look fast? I'd really get depressed about some people's IQ if _that_ is their idea of a fast computer.

Just thought I'd check in and see what you're up to as of late. Not a whole hell of a lot from what I can see. YOU FUCKING FAILURE!!! Why don't you go and shut the fuck up now?
