  1. Who cares WHO guarantees you paid time off? on Do Companies Punish Workers Who Take Vacations? · · Score: 1

The OP mentioned that the US is the only rich country in the world where the government doesn't guarantee paid time off from one's job. Who cares? Whether it's a legal right or a company policy, if you're afraid to take it off for fear of being viewed as a slacker, then you won't take time off. My company gives me paid time off, and I take it. I have no idea whether I'm seen as a slacker or not, and I don't care. If I take too much time off, I have to take it unpaid, and they let me do that, too.

An accident is a mishap which the parties involve did not intend to happen. I prefer the term "collision" because it's factual and leaves motivation and intent out of it. People are routinely arrested for things which they did not intend to do, and are often convicted of them, too.

Resale value is irrelevant. If you're already getting a discount because the market fears radiation, your lower resale value will be offset by the lower purchase price now. In other words, your profit or loss when you sell will probably be similar to those of all apartment sellers in Manhattan at time of sale.

Not true. Protestantism teaches salvation through faith alone. If you believe Christ died for your sins and accept Him as your personal savior, you go to heaven, regardless of how you behave afterwards. Catholicism teaches salvation through faith and good works. I'm an atheist, but Catholicism seems fairer in this respect, to me. After all, actions speak louder than worlds.

This is utterly untrue. Blackjack is far and away the most profitable game in any casino. Why? Because most people either don't know, or don't religiously play, basic strategy.

Casinos don't offer any unprofitable or nearly-unprofitable games. That being said, basic strategy brings the edge down to well within the range of entertainment cost for the $5-10 player, and card counting can bring it down further or even reverse it if done well, but I pity the person who thinks he/she can do it well but actually cannot.

  20. What does reading have to do with it? on On the Economics of the Kindle · · Score: 1

Why would how many books you _read_ in a year have anything to do with the breakeven point? The relevant figure is how many books you _buy_ in a year. Besides, the beauty of a Kindle is that it can replace a whole bookcase full of books. Of course, a bookcase full of books might impress visitors more than a Kindle, but in terms of readability, it's no advantage. Calculate how many square feet of floor space your bookcase takes up, and express that as a percentage of the size of your house. Now look up on www.zillow.com and see how much you could sell your house for. Now you know how much a Kindle will save you in real estate costs, which is the real savings. My house is worth about one Kindle per square foot, so I'd start saving money the moment I bought a Kindle. I'm waiting for version 2, though.
