Exactly, people need the "killer app" to get broadband. Most people are not going to get broadband just to watch movies on it with there 15" monitor when they have a 27" or bigger TV in the main room w/ the family, of course they could DL a movie and burn it to a viewable media for the TV but then they would be arrested and thrown in jail for 5 years.
People in the movie industry need to rethink this as having copy righted crap in every PC is not going to sell movies on the net. Hopefully this campagin finance bill will the the political bigwigs who really votes for em.
(1) that broadband access to the Internet will never gain consumer acceptance without movies legitimately being made available on the Net and (2) that producers deliberately are holding back the exhibition of movies on the Net because of -- in the words of Lawrence Lessig ["Who's Holding Back Broadband," op-ed, Jan. 8] -- "the threat the Net presents to their relatively comfortable way of doing business." Add to this (3) the accusation that copyright owners are stifling innovation in the digital world.
Ok in reponse to number 1, Broadband access is going up with or without movies online. I personaly would rather watch movies in a theater (for the expirence) rather than pay to download 6 gigs that I can only watch 1 time.
# 2 Movies will get to the net one way or another. If movie producers want to make $ off of the movies on the net they had better start watching the music industry to see where that goes and start trying to develop there own model that will work. People will not pay to DL 6 gig's only to watch once when we can now DL it and watch it for free as many times as we like.
My reply to #3 is Well DUA! Copyright Patended or not it dosent matter. Movies are already on the net. You guys are losing cuz you are snoozing so to speak. MS has your "secure digital format" and people already dont like it.
Movies are already on the net and the Movie industry had best deal with it or stop complaing about it. They are more money now than before but that is there own fault for trying to fight the change. Some movie producers are using the net to release special Internet only trailers. They realize most people even if they do pirate the movie and it is good will see it in theaters and or buy it on DVD for the extra features. Kevin Smith has done this with Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.
The draft is not the final say on the matter. A "last call" draft will be published later this year, at which point the public and W3C members will submit comments. A final decision from the director of the W3C is hoped for by the end of the year, said W3C spokeswoman Janet Daly.
So there is at least a year before it's totaly dead and gone and it may even come back if the members push it enough or somebody does. Thusly this is a victory but the battle isnt over yet.
It's a.gov so they have to use some contract we already have with IBM hardware and the MS site liscense. The director of my department is a big MS fan (even after he upgraded to XP on his laptop and corrupted the drive). I hope to be moving to a different department tho where I can possibly run linux on my desktop pc.
My managers will only buy windows products as they have a site liscense with MS. They are looking into Linux a little bit because of the Terminal server w/ load balancing does not load balance and the clusterd computers do not talk to each other. The profiles on the 3 clusterd servers do not update each other at all. This was much better than the last attempt my boss did using an IBM pre configured configured box the whole cluster got a BSOD and corrupted a drive losing data for 3 days. People were not happy.
I can only hope MS's poor performance will make them switch.
In my last job I worked at a Drug company making drugs. My manager had previously had my job before. Infact he was supposed to be the resident "expert" and was frequently consulted by upper managment. He had no idea what he was doing and no expirence or training as a manager. I was on labor loan to another department who had a manager (an older woman w/o any managment training) who was known to be a man hater. (all woman department) She would complain up a storm about the newest person in her department and a helluva lot if it was a man. After her bad reviews to my manager that were total BS, since I was on loan his quote was "you made me look really bad so I am going to try to do everything I can to get you out of this department or fired." Of course this was in a closed door meeting w/o anybody else around. So next month when I get put back into my regular job he "notices" how wrong I am doing things and makes me get "retrained." This is basicly an excuse to watch me 24/7 and have a power trip. He would also then try to convert me. I am not religous but he was. He would say that he "wasent religous but he had a personal relationship with JC." Now I dont care about that but he would throw that in your face all the time and say how I was a sinner since I didnt go to church.
Needless to say I got a.gov job after that. It's alot worse to deal with some things but at least I'm union and I dont have to worry about nutty religous managers.
I am not able to switch to Linux on the desktop due to the fact my managers refuse to consider it an option yet. I hope MS totaly screws the pooch with this new liscense scheme they have cooking up so that I can run Linux on the desktop.
The other thing is that I was getting TONS of calls about people asking me if the internet was down when the Code Red virus was slamming the net. None of my boxen were infected.
Sorry if I misled you but I've not had any boxes infected just people calling up about slow internet use.
Microsoft chairman Bill Gates "is really annoyed by the incredible pain we put everyone through in computing."
What about us who are reciving the pain? I wont belive it untill I see it. The ass kicking I got from the most recent MS Viri is still way to fresh in my memory.
I think I would be slightly worried about this being slightly like the first elevators. I mean they were not always as fail safe as they are today. I dont think I would like to ride on the first one.
I cannot belive the article did not do any background checking on Mr. Shiftman's claims that he got jobs by spamming? I highly doubt that. I almost think that may encourage more people to try regardless because I know some people like the last lady in the article...Any press is good press.....
If you thought lost keys were bad before just wait! Now you can lose the car keys and the Laptop HD all at the SAME TIME!. Please order today and for only 3 easy payments of 299.99 it can be yours today!
I drive an 89 Dodge Shelby and it is VERY Hackable so to speak. There are user groups out there for all of the 82-93 dodges who will help you do most anything from custom reprogramming of the ECU to reverse engineering the ECU chip to total race engine mods. The newer Dodge Neons are the same way. Totally moddable. With a few PC attachments and custom serial cables you can make you can even reprogram your own ECU. Part of the problem is that Honda has never been very Mod friendly due to it's reliability. For some strange reason people love to mod those cars up. My dad told me something a long time ago. You can make a fast car slow but it will cost you 2x as much, so why do that when you can make a fast car faster?
sorry, but I don't want AOL to have my credit card info, just as I don't want Microsoft to have it.
I agree with this. About 7 months ago my local ISP shut down.:( The option was given to us to go with Earthlink for a discount for the first few months. I decied to decline and go with another ISP that was localy owned and had better prices. Needless to say Earthlink would send me bills every month after that for the next 5 months. Luckily I did not give them my Credit card # or I would have been automaticly billed. The best part was that when I would call up to tell them I didnt owe them anything and to quit sending me these stupid bills for no service they could not do anything because they didnt know my "logon."
Earthlink Phone guy: Yes we can do that what is your login ID?
Me: I dont have a login ID. I never signed up for your service. I dont want your service.
Earthlink Phone guy: You really must have one. Your in our computer.
Me: No I dont. I have never had your service Nor do I want it. Do you have a manager?
After doing that once every month for 5 months untill they finaly quit sending me bills. But not before threating to send me to a collection agency.
I always wonder if people/aliens will be looking at our towns and cities long after we are gone......
Alien archeologist: Yes this is a prime example of a 74 Ford Pinto. We think this race decided to move to mechanical devices like this as they tired of the temperament of horses and needed something more suited to packing around the primitive copper and silicon devices they called computers. This race did not develop common nanotech use for several centuries.......
I would suggest the same as doom and the original Wolfenstein do not play before bedtime. I forgot and played it and then went right to bed to surreal nightmares about sneaking around and shooting Nazi's with a silenced submachine gun. I then woke up drenched in sweat and had a hard time going back to sleep. The next day my girlfriend laughed and taunted me for hours, little does she know that I can always blame it on the game if I go crazy.
Yes. The cable companies are coming to the realization that if they charge like that they will run out of chargeable items sometime soon. Everybody will have a connection before everybody has a toaster with an IP.
If they make you pay X$'s for every IP or every connection in your house they can easily make a lot more money than worrying about billing per GB or bandwidth numeric. It's all about who has the biggest pile of cash to roll around and play in......
It's good to know my ISP is working hard at nights finding new ways to work that extra dollar out of my pocket. The whole reason I pay for that faster than dialup connection is FOR MY OTHER COMPUTERS! My biggest fear is that stupid new laws/protocols/EULA's will be easier to pass now with the Anti-Terrorism bill in effect for the next 4 years. I can just see the cable/DSL companies labling this sort of thing as "hacking" or "Internet Terrorism"
This is still one of the major problems of using alterative engery methods. I rember a while ago Chrystler made a prototype(sp?) Hemi Charger that ran on Hydrogen and it worked quite well. It ran very clean and made alot of power as it was supercharged. The only problem is the expense of the Hydrogen fuel. Perhaps use big floating solar seperaters?
Also a fellow I work with has built several cars that run on Methanol (sp?) as they can produce HUGE power gains. They also burn very clean but use twice as much fuel as a comparable gas engine does and the fuel costs about 1/3 more where I live. Oh well.....
Yes the cost will be high at first but how high? A lot of people will be intrested in this right away and a few have to get sold so the technology gets cheaper right?

They are not backing down just quite yet.

Do the names "Nimda", "Code Red" and "I Love You" ring a bell?
Thoes were FEATURES not security flaws!
Sheesh I wish people would get it right. That's why MS has less bugs. They count half of them as hidden features!

Microsoft said it was safe.....
