the largest sector of consumers for music these days is pre-teen and teenage girls. not exactly the ones who will be most likely to gnutella their collection. alot of them want the actual cd, so they can oggle over all the pics of the cute guys or help out the 'cool' girl bands.
MLB and the NFL make huge money for the networks. Advertisers just can't wait to get an ad on during a NFL game, and the same is for baseball in certain areas (i live 1 hour away from NYC). plus, ratings for sports, right now, are pretty much guaranteed. next up is NASCAR, which isn't just for hicks anymore.
it is no different than the 3 or 4 different versions of Battle Bots. people right now will watch.
the WWF is seen more and more now too (books by the wrestlers that show up on NY Times best seller list, music etc)
when the execs find something that works, they beat it to death. Family Guy, Futurama, and that stupid Texas show (don't know the name) are all examples of marginal shows, that only have 1 or 2 seasons of good ideas. in the end, they are cheap copies of what they did with the Simpsons.
it is not just FOX, but all the networks. think Sex and the City spawns Querr as Folk.

is it not true that most people out there do not have broadband? won't you know when Microsoft tries to downlaod something onto your machine? besides, a computers true usefullness has nothing to do with an internet connection. go ahead, buy Windows XP with Office XP, and use it as it was desinged for; stand alone with no access (no pun intended) to the outside world. without that LAN/modem connection, you are fine. IMHO.
(Also, notice the lack of mention of Hiroshima, Nagasaki, and Dresden when people talk about their outrage at the concept of the killing of civillians - a total of 140,000 unarmed, innocent civilians were wiped out in order to influence the gov'ts of Japan and Germany through the terror of their citizens).
all is fair in love and war, my friend. and to cite the excuse of 4 year old children the world over "they started it."
Why go again? All of these missions to moons or planets just turn into a really expensive way to litter. If these things came back, that would be worth it. The learning of how to design spacecraft would be greatly advanced if something came back into Earth orbit, was retrieved by a shuttle, and brought back to a lab on Earth to be tested. Maybe then, NASA could learn from their mistakes, and design something that actually works, all the time, as designed. We spend billions of dolllars on a budget that sends things into space, and hope/pray it woorks, without really knowing. And accepting the fact that it will not be comng back?! And why do we want to learn so much about Mars? To colonize it? That would be a disaster with current technology, and thinking, at NASA. Not to mentio the problems we have on Earth currently. How about pushing the focus of living on Mars, to that of living on a clean Earth? We are starting to go on the right direction. Fix us first, then colonize.
The whole point of it, after sitting through the 10 minute presentation at the expo, is to have all the true features of MS Outlook (using Ximian Evolution), on Linux, and be able to sync with a MS Exchange 2000 server.
Supposed to work with Lotus Domino as well.
Does not work with older version(s) of MS Exchange:(
Of course, with MS doing "bug fixing" this month (Feb 2002), any patches might make XC useless.
Ximian Evolution (free as in beer) is the cool product, Ximian Connector just makes it usefull in a Windows office environment.
Ximian Desktop runs on top of Gnome. AFAIK, it is not required for XC/XE.
Unfortunately, the gf does not. She _has_ to watch all 3 versions of Law & Order, every week. If she is not able to watch live, she tapes it (VCR).
She is very much into "shiny" things (marketing), and she does not care much about Tivo.
Which illustrates the problem, people who would use it, and could probably afford it, don't.
To say again, "pause live tv" is a lame slogan. They should have network specific ads; on NBC you could have an ad stating "...record ER everytime it is on during the week, and watch the ones you want..." etc etc.
hopefully the smaller (if they still exist) cable companies will go for this first, forcing the big guys too, so as to offer something "better" than that no-name competition down the street.
socialists don't get to pick/vote on who is in that government.
no, it is the other way around. MS got a Berkeley UNIX and have somehow gotten the bloat that is Office to run on it.
it did not say that the Berkeley Group had gotten MS Office to run on a UNIX.
here
very cool that the old guys knew that this stuff belonged in the public domain. now if we could only convince that generation following them!

computer knowledge is not a necessity.
;-)
it helps, but there are many many multi-millionaires who do not use computers. more than just those over-paid atheletes
let the little buggers learn how to think first, than use a computer.
a little big, but nice.

"I don't know if it changed very much in that period..."
amazingly enough, it did not change at all. not one second (supposedly).
"the plot is vintage Arnold..."
uh, he is a firefighter this time, not a cop or android thing...
1. region encoding work around.
:-(
2. copied game work around.
I think the second will hold up in court

What if in the process of makeing "genetically isolated" choices, we get what happens with Ma Bell??
:-(
The baby Bells are worth far more, and hold far more power than Ma Bell ever did.
Splitting something up to make it weaker is not always the best solution.
Damned if I know what is though
Miguel can just create his own fork, and move MiGnome into his version of the future.

2048x1536 what? pixels? define a pixel. how "big" is a pixel?

To promote standards, they must have a name. That way, some governing body can "verify" that your DXGA is a true DXGA.
