Dudes, c'mon, our law enforcement officers and law makers are way too busy with important things such as a bribe-sponsored copyright reform to worry about such pesky things...:p
Coluche (1944-1986), a cult French Comedian, tried to pull this off in 1980, for the 1981 French presidential elections. Everybody started to get freaked out when he actually showed up with 16% of intended votes in the polls...
What's truly funny is that I remember that TextEdit in the very first public beta of OSX (a few years back) was already able to open Word docs. This feature never made it to any of the current upgrades though. I guess they had planned for this for a while, but MS b*tched at them a little too loud at the time. Now the question is: is this gonna make it in the released version this time around?!?
Personally, I burn my backups to cd. Then, I duplicate the cd(s), and store one copy in my safety deposit box at my bank. I figure that if they can protect their oh so beloved money, my cds are most likely to be safe there. - stephane
One movie that would just be (even more) spectacular in IMAX format would be Le Grand Bleu (The Big Blue, in its English/exported version) by Luc Besson (see The Fifth Element, for the non-French;o).
Atlantis, by L. Besson as well, would also be a must.
I haven;t installed it yet beause comments on sites like versiontracker.com are just killing IE. Most users are complaining that their browser is now crashing close to 2 or 3 times a day versus the previous once a month under the older version.
I say wait and see!;o) Their last one wasn't that long ago either, so there's bound to be another one coming.
I admit this handheld looks sexy, but I find it a shame that sony didn't find a way to cram a phone like Handspring did w/ the Treo...:o( Sony does make mobile phones too after all, so it's not like they'd get out of their market.
This is what I'm waiting for to upgrade from my trustee Palm IIIe. Except for the lack of RAM, I just don't feel the need to upgrade yet, as none (but the Treo) enable me to consolidate my devices/toys. The treo's just too "young", waiting for generation 2.
I am in the process of organizing a charitable project that will be fueled by donations that will benefit both underprivileged children and the Open Source community at large.
Official release date for the project is Jan. 1st 2002, and will hopefully work, not on saving the schools, but on empowering the next generations of kids, and teach them to excel in an Open Source / Free Software environment, regardless of their social class.
The project will first start as a Canadian charity (that's where I am), but hopes to gain volunteers throughout, who will directly benefit their own locality.
I'll make sure/. is my firs posting when we go live with our endeavor.

Your best bet would be to go native and get yourself one of the old Amstrad on Ebay France (or UK). http://search.ebay.fr/search/search.dll?from=R40&_trksid=m37&satitle=amstrad&category0=
My Amstrad had a standard audio tape deck, not floppies... That sure made it easy to copy software: just pop it in your dual-tape boombox. ;)

I remember reading about similar findings by Australian academics in the mid-90's.

The actual link mentioned above should go to Mobile High Speed X
There is a bad space in the one above which end up bringing you to an adobe product instead of the one the poster intended.
