  1. An interesting fact... on Automakers and Crash Data Recorders · · Score: 2, Insightful

A little off topic, but this bugged me so much that I thought it was worth mentioning.

No disrespect to Americans, but this statistic came from the USA.. so whilst I am sure none of you American /. readers are guilty of this, SOMEONE out there is...

You know that recently car manufacturers have been going nuts on making more strongly reinforced roofs, and putting about 8 airbags in every single direction.. the reason for this is, and I kid you not, that market research in the USA has shown that a number of Americans dont like having to use their seatbelts. As a result, the motor industry has been ordered to make it as safe a possible in a car to cater for those who dont use the seatbelt.

Now... excuse me.. but am I the only one who finds that f*cking laughable? Its down to the motor industry to cover for some lazy fool who decides that today he wont bother to use his seatbelt, and will sue because he gets seriously injured in a car accident?

    Give me strength.

I think one of my very earliest, and it really is only more of a still picture than an entire event, is the pram that my mum used to push me and my sister around in. I am almsot exactly 2 years older than her, and it had some weird seat contraption where should be in the pram, and I sat on this seat that went above it - rather an old fashioned design from what I remeber.

I must have been about 2 or 2 and a 1/2 years, and my sister had just been born.

I recently went to the Netherlands on a short break, and got used to the Euro quite quickly.. I think its time we grow up and adopt that.

    Superior software?

Time to lose some Karma here, but bullshit. I love Linux, and I think it is a truely great platform - but the way I see it is that a large majority of Linux applications are clones of Windows applications, and quite frankly they are rarely as fast, functional, or reliable.

Mozilla - very good, feature packed, but no way near as good as IE - it pains me to say it, but everyone harps on about the fact that IE doesnt support all the standards that Mozilla does. But if people dont seem to be coding in those standards, and are using the broken Microsoft ones, then what the hell is the point? IE belts along at a pace I have yet to see Mozilla keep up with, and it renders every website correctly, regardless of whether its using an incorrect standard to do it or what.

Nautilus - pretty but terribly slow - and to be quite honest, frustrating to use. I prefer just regular old GNOME with none of the Nautilus stuff bolted on.

XMMS - better than what? Winamp? I dont think so... XMMS is a superb application, but again is missing so many things that make Winamp truely great.

I wont comment on the rest as I dont use them regularly enough to make informed comments on them.

I had started looking at nVidia cards a few months back.. I couldn't really afford to upgrade to a high end card, so wanted to pick up a cheap GeForce2 or something similar to my current Radeon 7200 VIVO, simply because of the excellent Linux driver support compared to ATI. I ended up getting offered a Ti4400 at a crazy price and bought it.

The nVidia Linux drivers are superb (read they WORK) and I have not had any problems getting them working across a range of distributions.

A class act nVidia - i'll be looking to you for my next video card, whenever that is :)

Hm... I found that if you really fill the disc with a lot of tunes it does take a while to find its feet before it starts playing. But after that its the usual 3 or 4 second gap between tunes.

I have occasionally had the drive panic and not read a CD that I know works great and is spotless.. just remove it and put it back in again and it seems to work.

I also get occasional audio glitches in the music.. this is really ear splitting if you have the music cranked right up and you get a loud glitch.

I burned all my music so far onto Verbatim CDRW's so they are all done at low (4x) speed - they seem to behave pretty well to be honest. Might be worth cutting em at low speed and see how you get on?

  22. Management... on The New IT Crisis · · Score: 4, Interesting

One of the biggest problems as I see it is that management dont appreciate how important IT has become in their company. Looking at my company, I think they still relate the IT department to the same IT department of five years ago when to be fair the technology was a little easier to grasp and there were much less computers in offices.

Take networking for example - it used to be in our place BNC and the occasional run of UTP cable - all attached to relatively unintelligent devices. Now its all Cisco switches, fiber and cat5e - and it really is a full time job in itself managing a large network with so many 'intelligent' devices.

Also taking into account the addition of so many more servers (SQL, Mail, Finance stuff, Student Records, DNS, Proxy..) - the list is endless. Again, these systems have really bloomed in the past 4 or so years, at least for where I work.

I guess they dont see how much goes on behind doors when it comes to this business..
