I knew I shouldnt have sold my PS2 to help with the deposit for my car..
Admittedly I only every played Gran Turismo 3 on it, but I was really holding out for the Linux kit - but I thought it was just a small Sony gimic, that they were only going to release in Japan. And then they go and bring it out in the US (and possibly Europe?) - doh.
The whole point of a website is to turn a profit - I am sure you do it for fun sometimes, but on a site as busy as Slashdot, there must be some astronomical costs.
Those adverts didnt seem to obtrusive IMHO. I dont have a problem with it.
Hm.. that sounds like an empty thread to me. Pull Windows off the market? Oh sure - so all of the software they market, that runs on Windows will be useless. All they would be left to sell would be internet keyboards, optical mice, and xbox's.
Because Microsoft know that it poses a serious threat to them and their business model. If it was so insignificant, they would ignore it and leave it to fizzle out.
Ironically, their continual 'poking' and 'name calling' seems to be making it more and more popular - I dont know a single person who reads a fresh cut of Microsoft FUD and says "My god - they are so right - time to ditch this Linux crap, and buy 200 copies of Windows!".
Well.. even better.. instead of stuffing network switches into a teddy bear, why not stuff a cable modem / adsl modem into one? I guess those would sell more popularly, and I would definately have a Tux penguin sat on top of my PC knowing that it actually served a purpose:)
I really can't believe that this kind of thing is allowed to go on.
Though I guess a lot of these 'non profit' making companies need to sue all these people, to help pay the CEO's wages - that $450,000 could sure come in helpful to cover one or two of the big bosses annual salaries.
The companies do one thing, but the standard commitee approve another?
Perhaps they should try talking to each other.
Just out of curiosity - could the electronics companies just go ahead and use what they want, or would they then be 'not allowed' to use the DVD name because it doesnt conform to the predetermined standards?
I have to say that these continual security alerts are nothing but a major headache.
If my job were to simple admin a couple of systems - and thats all I did all day - then I wouldnt have a problem.. I would just check by every morning at the Windows Update site, or on Red Hats up2date site and patch my systems.
But being as I am the only techie in our group who is concerned about system security, for our 15+ servers it becomes a problem. And also seeing that I have other techie jobs to do throughout the day (like reinstalling machines, installing software, end user support)..
It just makes the job a nightmare. And then you get held responsible if those systems get hacked from a vulnerability.. how can that be your fault?
Companies need to take responsilbility, without a doubt.
I can tell you that is pisses me off. Social Programs should be covered by all the other mounds of tax we have to pay including:
* VAT @ 17.5% on any luxuary items.. seems the government feels that EVERYTHING we buy is a luxuary item though.
* Huge tax on Cigarettes & Booze
* Income Tax - taken straight from our wages. I earn around $16000 a year, and they take ~%10 off me before I even open my wage slip.
It wouldnt bother me so much if our roads were in pristine condition, and we could put the money into other stuff - but they are NOT in good condition.
It sucks.

I'm curious.
Why does it say on your website that you do not make your email address 'publicly' available - then you make it publicly available on a really really popular(busy?) website like/. ?
My god.. is this in addition to the money we already pay?
* Road Tax ($250'ish a year)
* Insane petrol prices (equivilant to around $4 a gallon)
* Astronomical insurance prices (I am 21, been driving for 3 years, had no accidents & clean license, and I am paying £1400 a year for 'basic' cover on a 2 litre, 16 valve Corrado)
This country is all about ripping its inhabitants right off.. it pisses me off.
And the thing that gets me the most - the roads are in a terrible state ! My typical drive to work on a morning (about 5 miles), there are about 10 REALLY deep holes that I have to swerve to avoid, to save a back jarring 'THUD'. So where does our road tax, and extra money on petrol go?!
This country drives me nuts.. welcome to Ripoff Britain.
Unbelieveable. Slashdot is a free site, and some of you even complain / actively block the harmless banner adverts at the top of the page !
You know - someone actually has to pay for the bandwith, maintainance, and general upkeep on a site like this.. you could at least leave a small banner on your screen and even click it once in a while !
I havent seen the X-Files in ages.. though I suspect a possibly ender for Duchovney will be him getting taken by aliens to visit his sister on some UFO.
They have always had this sister/abduction thing going on - maybe they will end it for Fox Mulder that way?
..it will be a crying shame. I think they have done some pretty impressive work, and if they end up going out of business because of lack of funding that would suck.
Plus SGI would have to rewrite large portions of IRIX to make it work on new architectures.. or would they drop IRIX? Hope not:(
So you are telling me you work straight through from the minute the clock hits 9am right through till 5pm (assuming thats your daily hours) only stoping for the pre-agreed lunch break and/or coffee breaks?
Get real. If however you do, you get todays 'Model Employee' award.. well done.
I should do pretty well then.. I usually sleep from 12->7 (optimum 7 hours:), dont smoke, and rarely drink to excess. Just need to cut down on the greasy food (everyone has a vice) and get some exercise, and I could live forever ! Bwahahah:)
I suggested this very same idea to my Cisco CCNA instructor about 4 months ago, and he said that it would never work over even slightly long distances because of interference by such things as rain falling into the line of the laser.
And then 4 months on, I read this.. I should go into network device design.
The 'could get a better Mac running OSX' comment obviously has to be a flame. People buy various systems to perform various tasks - an Apple system would not be able to perform a number of tasks that a Solaris box might do.. its totally stupid to suggest that it isnt as good because it doesn't 'look' as good.
But I myself have recently got into the Solaris market - picked up a new Sun Blade 100 (about as entry level as it gets). Solaris has been interesting - but I do have to say that on a regular joe workstation, it really is very very slow. But you certainly cannot beat its stability - it even manages to make Netscape 4.7 (which gives me all kinds of trouble on SGI IRIX and Linux) stable ! How about that !:)

I agree.. you put across a very fair point ! :)

Plenty of Windows users here too.. everyone has an opinion, you anonymous wuss.

So Solid Crew? I'd rather have my tongue hammered wafer thin with a steak tenderiser, and have my tongue nailed to the floor with a croquet hoop.
:)
