I understand your point, and I should have limited my scope of my musicians statement- I did mean the famous ones. We overvalue entertainment, in general, is mostly what I was after. I over simplified a decade of thoughts in a short space.

I generally don't agree with filesharing- and think people should pay for their music, software, and movies- and receive a right to listen/watch/play in any format reachable through algorithm (eg not through re-engineering). That said, I don't think if someone rips a copy of a movie they rented they should owe hundreds of thousands of dollars and spend 5 years in jail- or if they download a song they didn't pay for. It should be discouraged, certainly, but I'm not sure how much legal discouragement I support.

  4. Re:why are used cd's allowed, though? on RIAA's Oppenheim Tries To Protect MediaSentry · · Score: 1

I should add- I tend to think that copying without gain or distribution should more or less be ok- and artists should focus on making money the old way - tours, products, endorsements, etc. On that track, I also think sporting individuals are overpaid and actors and musicians are severely overpaid and people like teachers should be the ones raking it in, but we'd rather spend ourselves into dramatic oblivion watching movies than go to school. People don't like forced learning, so our money goes elsewhere.

they like to talk from both sides of their mouth that the CD is your license to listen and yet the license is a separate issue. The law accepts the right of resale, the RIAA can't fight that. While I agree copying is a lesser evil than made out to be, copying bits is still copyright infringement (note, not stealing).

  10. UPSes are a must for home users on Why Power Failures Can Always Lead To Data Loss · · Score: 1

Forget about outages for a minute, think about lightning, surges, sags, etc. I lost some network gear to lightning before I had money to put UPSes everywhere, and I've seen modems with chipsets that have huge holes ripped in them from a strike. Currently, my TV stack (tivo, cable box, cable amp, cable modem, router, etc) are all plugged into a 1500 VA UPS, all of our computers each have UPSes which guarantee at least 10 minutes runtime (depends on number of disks, etc), and the tivo in the other room is on a 550VA UPS. The 1500VA UPS will carry our network gear, tivo, etc for about 2 hours and 20 minutes. Most of our outages tend to be either brief cuts lasting 2 seconds or less, but otherwise tend to be a couple of hours. Around 4:30a the other night, we had an outage affecting some 3000 houses. Before the power went out completely, it reset 3 or 4 times as the grid tried to reroute around the fault and failed. This would have been murder on a disk if the system was set to restore to previous state. The other dozen or so blips every year would also be bad on disks. Anyway, the power finally goes out, my tivo is still recording my shows, and the only light in the house is the LCDs, which I use to shut down the systems and immediately power the screens down to increase runtime. I eventually had to shut off the smaller UPS with the extra tivo, but everything else was shut down cleanly and didn't have any bobbles in power. After sitting around in the dark for a while, unable to sleep, I plugged in a lamp into the 1500VA on my main desktop UPS (which was offline) and read a book for a couple hours until the power came back on. It's pretty damn weird when you think you're maybe the only person for a couple miles with a light on, let alone a tivo or a computer. I second what others have said about laptops, it's pretty nice to be able to keep working for a while with the power out. UPS's are a must for many reasons.

It's different in that we have sections of spectrum reserved for open use, but manufacturers of devices that use those bandwith chunks must register their devices and meet certain standards of interference. So, yes, all devices are in fact registered, but not an an individual basis- and why should they be? If my device is misbehaving, is it my fault or the vendor's? Overwhelmingly, the problem is likely to be the result of inadvertent damage (lightning, ESD, etc), defect, or design induced failure (poor parts choice for profit). The benefits to per-user registration are not worth the overhead of the system, especially given the lack of real problems that occur.
