OpenNIC is also opennic.glue: OpenNIC but the trouble is that you have your computer configured to use their domain servers, or you can't see any of the.glue,.geek, etc. TLDs.
yes, yes, yes! I have been a Niven fan for a long time, and I also love Vernor Vinge. I love the Vinge short story Fast Times at Fairmont High. My favorite Niven short story is The Fifth Profession, also I loved Borderland Sol, both of which are either in N-Space or Playgrounds of the Mind. My favorite Niven novels are probably the Mote series, but I also loved Oath of Fealty and Ringworld.
I don't see how exposing my clients to criminal risk from an ex con is the Right Thing
How many linux geeks are ex Windows users? Just because the hacker was in the past guilty, doesn't mean anything. If they were still considered to be a threat to society, (ie not rehabilitated) they would (in theory) be still incarcerated. If our criminal code releases people who have shown no evidence of being rehabilitated, then perhaps we need to rethink our criminal code.
I never will get why people talking on cellphones in a restaraunt is annoying, but people talking just as loudly to people sitting next to them is not a problem.
I wonder what the advantages of hydraulic launch are as compared to linear induction. Also, what about steam? (don't laugh, it is what aircraft carriers use)
I have seen laser displays like this, but they were just "lines" rather than "fills". I think the method they were using was somewhat lo-tech though: bounce the lasers off of mirrors mounted on speaker cones, and feed a custom audio signal in. It behaved much like an oscilliscope (ie an x channel and a y channel, so you cold have pictures such as the classic circle -> potato chip). I think with a good timing circuit and fast lasers (ie switching speed) you could scan the lasers across the screen crt style.
As has been pointed out by others, if you see someone stealing mail, call the Postal Inspectors. They will be glad to bust them, stealing mail is a serious crime, and they have a conviction rate of about 85%
I went through a job interview once- one of the interviews for my current job, in fact- with the distinct sensation that my right arm was burning. It left temporary redness as my body attempted to respond to what it thought was happening- but the arm was fine.
Did it ever occur to you that that wasn't a job interview, it was the gom jabbar!!!:-)
Yes, but people would notice the mysterious third moon. Instead, paint it pink, and setup a cheap and simple Somebody Else's Prpblem field. You can run it on a couple of ordinary flashlight batteries for a hundred years!
Well, it wasn't built then, but Oh, if it was. The computer is The Analytical Engine, successor to the Difference Engine. A fully programmable digital computer, made out of brass gears and wheels. It was never built (until a few years ago), because the metal machining technology was not quite up to the task. There is a wonderful book by William Gibson and Bruce Sterling entitled The Difference Engine speculating what would have happened if it had been successfully built. Imagine the industrial and information revolutions occuring simultaneously!
True. I think a computer version of the battle room would be a pretty cool game. (zero g, guns that freeze opponents, you can shoot yourself to partially paralyze yourself, etc.)
I thought so too, but for whatever reason, I don't think I have ever received much, if any spam from the address on my keys. Also I have certainly never received a single spam that was OpenPGP signed. I was thinking about requiring all incoming messages to be pgp signed, or else they get smtp bounced. I could include a link to hushmail or a faq about OpenPGP... What do you all think?

Anyone else remember this game? You had a gun that shot CDs. IIRC, there was an Aerosmith soundtrack.

d'oh, you are correct. Still a great scene though!
Did anyone else notice that they still use ipv4 in the future? I thought the "hacking" scene was wonderful, btw!

What kind of processor was available in 1803?

except that this is Microsoft, they always buy the company :-)
In the United States, it is expressly legal to record off of the radio. The law is called the Audio Home Recording Act

There is a multi-player freecell, and it is cross-platform too! NetCell
