I went to see it two nights ago and had only seen one episode of the series during it's original run. It really didn't hook me the first time around. The movie was easily understood and, I thought at least, better than pretty much everything else I saw this past summer. My wife hadn't even seen one episode of the show and she got it without any trouble.

  4. Re:The low bastards! on HBO Attacking BitTorrent · · Score: 5, Insightful

When you taped their show with your VCR you could do exactly what with it? give or loan your tape to someone else? Spend far more time than it was worth making a copy of your tape to give or loan to someone else? There was a limit to the "so called" damage you could do. I say "so called" because honestly, your shared tape of a show on HBO was little more than a small, free sample to anyone you gave it to. At best it was an extended commercial for HBO and their wares.

Now you go online and the entire season will be there to be downloaded. Given time and enough fans the whole run of the show would be available online if HBO didn't do something about it. Why bother paying for HBO if you can get the one or more shows you want to watch online for free?

You can't compare the taping of television shows twenty years ago to the ridiculous level of leeching that takes place today. As Samuel L. Jackson said so well in Pulp Fiction it "ain't the same fuckin' ballpark, it ain't the same league, it ain't even the same fuckin' sport."

And most of all every single person who tries to draw the comparison knows it perfectly well.

Well I for one voted for Kerry and just hope that the damage "Dubya" does in his remaining time in office isn't too great to correct. See, what that means is that I supported the other guy which, in my country is an option that won't land you in a camp full of dissidents.

Admittedly I should probably add the word "Yet" to the end of that last sentence. That falls into my "hope he doesn't do too much more damage" line. Regardless there is literally no comparison between the two countries. If all you see is a pot and a kettle here then you need glasses my friend.

Extraordinarily amusing. I thank you for a long hard laugh that was much needed. Your explanation of the Korean War is "interesting" to say the least.

The only history you seem to have down correctly is the part that's unflattering to the US (not surprising). This is completely ok by the way because we know what our country has done wrong. You're not opening any eyes here with that stuff. It's common knowledge in the US. Your take on what your own country has done is pretty distorted though. Your points on the Korean War, Tibet, and India would be funny if you weren't so deprived of real information and you didn't sound so sincere.

If you think we're led by monsters wait till you figure out the truth about your own government. That's probably never going to happen but hey, I'm wishing good things for you man.

Don't you have an party loyalty class or something to attend somewhere? Go put your Mao cap and jacket on and head out the door before someone figures out that you're talking to people in the "decadent west".

Well, you know they (Apple) call it "buying" a song on iTunes and as far as I'm concerned I've bought the song. I know you're right on this and I can only speak for myself but I'm not too terribly demanding when it comes to how good stuff sounds. The "make a CD and then rip it back to mp3" bit doesn't bother me since I was going to make a CD to take out to my car anyway and I'll always have that original DRM'd AAC file. If the sound suffers some small amount from all of this then so be it. I used to buy LP's when I was a kid and took poor care of them. Then I bought my music on cassette tapes. What I get now is well within my idea of acceptable.

I buy albums on iTunes and I make CD's out of those albums. Once the track is on the CD the DRM's out of there. From that point forward I do with it what I please.

A whole hearted "Fuck That Noise!" to your insightful post.

I can't be the only person getting bad vibes from the idea of scientists recovering some 20 million year old spider DNA from this thing. We all know that once scientists get hold of 20 million year old spider DNA they can't just study it and compare it to modern spider DNA. Oh hell no, they're going to have to make some brand new "vintage" 20 million year old spiders out of it. Then those spiders will escape and breed with our spiders and shortly after that we're going to learn about the little tiny kind of spider who was really responsible for the Dinosaurs going away.

I'm going to be so pissed off when I'm proven right on this.

Close. I think you mean WordPerfect never worked properly on Windows. WordPerfect for DOS worked quite well. I remember the Windows version being a buggy beast though. Also wasn't there a version of Lotus 123 that wouldn't work well with a specific version of DOS? That I think was thought to be deliberate as well.

All things being equal I think it's a case of that was then, this is now. I don't think Microsoft can get away with that in todays world quite as easily as they could back in the day. Today there would definitely need to be some stealth involved because getting caught would crank up the anti-trust machine one more time. Sooner or later if they keep crossing the line someone is going to bust their ass for doing it.

Very true that part about the US. I was a police officer for four years before hurting my back and having to find another career. The one universal truth of law enforcement in the state of Texas is "You can beat the rap but you can't beat the ride". If the police want to arrest you for literally anything there is nothing stopping them from doing so. It's known commonly as POTP, "Pissed off the Police".

As for unreasonable searches or searches without a warrant there's an answer to those as well. The police arrest you for "whatever" knowing that the charge is unlikely or even impossible to stick. Nevertheless they go ahead and make an arrest. Following the arrest they "inventory your posessions so nothing comes up missing, for your own protection". This is often extended to your automobile if a wrecker is called to tow it away. We can't go leaving your car on the side of the road now can we?

Anything illegal found while doing an inventory of the contents of your car then leads to further charges. It's not technically right but it's done all the time here.

  21. Now of course you're right, but.... on TiVo User's Fears Explored · · Score: 1

It's not like being right matters much in this fight. For the most part people aren't out there "buying" a TiVo anymore. They're getting one thrown in with whatever DirecTV or Time Warner cable package they buy. Yes, they "pay" for it. I'm not saying that they don't pay for it. I'm only saying that the purchase isn't quite like the one I made when I bought my ReplayTV a few years ago.

It's less a quesiton of the TiVo being a device that's stopped working in some fashion and more about their cable or satellite provider no longer letting them do something they used to do. If people are mad because TiVo cut back the functionality they can what? Stop paying for the service? Not buy another one? These are effective tactics against a company that's angered you.

If you see it as your satellite or cable provider cutting back functionality then what are you going to do? Cancel and go to a different one? Their TiVo's are just as crippled now. If your internet access is tied to your cable provider then are you going to ditch your ISP to make a statement about this? What if you're using internet phone?

That's just one small example but do you see how they've tied enough stuff together to make it a pain in the butt to buck this. That's the way it's designed to work. that's the way they're going to fuck us out of our rights one by one.

It's not hard to do. It doesn't make anyone special because they did it nor does it make for an interesting read. I'd rather see an article about someone trying to make it ten days without using a computer at all. Now that would be interesting and maybe, just maybe a challenge depending on where that person lived and what he or she did for a living. Ten days without using Windows? Please! That's like an article giving insight into going ten days without watching TNN. I guess it's tough for somebody out here to do but I don't think it rates as "News for Nerds, Stuff that matters"
