Their take? They don't have one on this because it's some vapor right out of George's asshole. He's rushing to get them out because he believes another format will be coming down the pipe very shortly and this might have a negative impact on the size of his "DVD version" take. He just pulled this piracy shit out of his ass because it's what everyone says today.
I really, really loved Star Wars but I fucking hate this guy.
I like my Star Wars as much as the next geek. I love it even but I have to say that George Lucas is so full of stinking shit that it's almost unbelievable.
His whole pompous BS about why he made Star Wars in the first place just grows every year that passes. He says he's bringing them out now on DVD because of piracy? Please. He's bringing them out now on DVD because he's afraid that based on his original plan he won't get the fat DVD version payday. He's afraid that a new format will be coming into play and he'll have missed the chance to fuck his fans out of their cash for the DVD's.
Launching into the piracy argument tells me that he's not just full of shit. He's full of shit AND he thinks the rest of us are too stupid to see it.
I like Star Wars but fuck George Lucas. Fuck him in his stupid ass.
I was telling my wife that the real problem with Linux is that there just aren't enough distributions out there. If some of these people, these so-called "open source programmers" would get off their asses and crank out a few more distributions THEN this stuff would really take off.
Security through $$$ might even work for them to except for the fact that to date Microsoft has shown almost zero ability to produce anything that's actually "secure".
Even if I were so inclined to pay someone for security Microsoft would be the last company on the face of the earth I'd go to to get that.
Their pile of cash is legendary and no matter how much they have (or can figure out how to get) they seem unable to incorporate this "security" thing into their products. What would make anyone think that throwing more money at them is going to change that?
I can say only one thing about the viability of three more "sequels" following these "prequels" and that is they would have to be absolutely incredible films to even have a chance to pull the franchise up to even ground level.
If you look at them in their intended sequence then you've got (And I don't care how good he makes Ep3) a very childish and frankly not very good story starting with Ep1 progressing to what the majority of people consider to be "the good ones" in Eps 4, 5, and 6. Of course Jedi wasn't up to Empire and really that's where things started getting pretty silly with those furry little previews of the abortion to come but we mostly tend to just lump those three movies together and call them "good" while we look at the prequels and call them (rightfully so) "lousy".
So if there ever were to be a trilogy of sequels then they'd have to be far more adult targeted in nature to even have a chance and they'd have to be the coolest friggin Star Wars movies ever to clean the taste of "Phantom Menace" out of our mouths. They would need to grow up and be serious (probably overly serious) and in effect age with thier audience to make most Star Wars fans happy. Then when the whole nine were viewed in order the story would get better and more serious as it moved along.
I don't see Lucas being capable of doing it. No way can he miracle up the ability to churn out three great pictures now. He is what he is, just a guy who had one really great idea, an excellent techician of film, a great editor, and a crummy director who's managed to pull a few pictures off.
That's a good question. In my case I have a ReplayTV 80hr unit and in between it and the television I've got a Panasonic DVD Recorder. It's basically nothing more than sticking a VCR in the loop. Now I have never tried to record a PPV movie on a DVD from my ReplayTV (And I've never tried to record on directly, using only the DVD recorder) but now I'm curious if it can be done.
I once tried to transfer an old VHS tape (commercial) to DVD with the DVD recorder and obviously it didn't work. Copy protection stepped in and "saved the day" for the MPAA or I might have gone on to become a hard core movie pirate and caused the collapse of the a major studio or two. Obviously the same thing would happen if I tried to copy a commercial DVD like that. Are PPV movies also protected in this manner? If they are then a DVD recorder's no help but if they aren't then it sounds like it might be an option.
The good it will do depends on whether or not you think it's important for an open source operating system to attract users from the wider audience of Windows users out there. If that's not something you think is important then certainly this is nothing to get excited about. If you do want wider use (which leads to greater support and more options) then it's important.
Without the eye candy Gnome and KDE are going to look flat and dull compared to whatever Windows and OSX are doing. Users are going to care about that.
dswensen is absolutely correct in everything he says. Leave it alone. There are some things in this world you simply can't un-see and this is one of them.
I'm sorry that this thing ever entered my consciousness.
No doubt they should skip this first meager offering and wait for the special collectors limited edition box set with the little Ewok statues holding it up but it ain't going to happen. Not only are they too far gone but they also know that if they don't buy the first one then it will be determined that demand for a special collectors limited edition box set with the little Ewok statues holding it up isn't there. Then they'll never get a chance to hear the commentary tracks, see the making of featurette, or learn the intimate details of what goes on inside the Ewok village.
No way they're going to let that happen. If they fail to buy this one it's game over. No better Ewok DVD's and no Star Wars Christmas Special DVD released down the road.
It has been my understanding (And I'm more than ready to admit to being wrong, if I am then feel free to say so) that we didn't break up Germany at all. The division of Germany was a direct reflection of the allied powers zones of occupation with "West Germany" being made up of the US, English, and French zones and "East Germany" being the Soviet zone. The Soviets simply made their Germany and the rest of us made ours.
You forgot to insult him.

The alarming drop in standards I've seen on Slashdot lately really bothers me. Insults are critical to the Slashdot environment.
At this rate we're going to see a complete lack of insults within...oh.....Oh, nevermind. We should be good on insults until 2231 give or take a few years.
But still it's no excuse to go slacking man. Now get back on here, call him an asshat and straighten up your postings pronto.
And that's why you're going to be paying more money for insurance thanks to your little black box and I won't be subsidizing people like you thanks to my little black box.
The fog was so thick that you didn't notice you were going 110mph? Fucking idiot. Forget about the black box and just stop driving before you kill someone.
No you will not be "judged" by a machine on the spot. Your actions will be recorded by a machine in a completely unbiased and impartial manner. Later a human being will be involved as they attempt to fit your story to those facts.
If you're telling the truth then your story should easily match what the machine recorded. If you're a fucking liar who needs to have his ass taken out from behind the wheel because he's a menace to everyone else on the road then you're going to get called on it and your lies won't help you.
Look, the early versions of this system are going to have shortcomings that will certainly require addressing but eventually you're going to have them in every vehicle. You're going to have them able to communicate their positions to each other. It's going to be a 24/7 kind of thing where any accident will be able to easily be reproduced and when that happens the people who fuck things up for the rest of us will have nowhere left to hide.
We don't get to that day until we go through this. I'm willing to go through this to get to that day. Most people are going to be willing to go through this to get to that day. The minority who will want to turn this into some giant battle over their rights will lose and then the majority of them will be revealed to be the dangerous shitheads who need it most and want it least (And that's not an accusation directed towards you. Not at all).
Well, see here's an asshat replying in exactly the manner you would expect him or her to. Someone wants to use a device to make the riskier drivers pay more for insurance than the safe ones and he's got his right to drive a car on a public road firmly stuffed up into the Bill of Rights.
Ok, so he doesn't have it actually listed in there but he seems pretty sure that a change in the way he is held accountable while enjoying a privilege is going to lead to the loss of all of his rights. I think maybe "rights" doesn't mean what you think it means.
And that may well be true. I'm not addressing whether the "future" I suspected you were looking at was better or worse. I'm just guessing how it would work.
It strikes me as a bit off though that you want to be able to race your car but don't want to pay more for insurance for that car. Do you pay for parts to make your car go faster? Have you had any work done to it or is it just the way it came from the factory? Legality aside because I understand you're talking about racing on a track, "racing" seems like a relatively risky activity to me and I see no reason why two similar drivers with similar cars should not be charged different rates when one commutes and races on weekends and the other just commutes.
Certainly you bring up some good points. Driving much slower than the speed limit and backing up traffic because of it isn't going to be picked up. Unless of course you do cause an accident. Then your driving behaviour just prior to the accident would be looked at in relation to where you were driving. I don't doubt that it would be noted that you were going 10 or so miles below the posted speed limit and if you were involved in an accident with another person I'm sure they'd bring that up as well. It might turn out that you're looked at a little closer after that to see if it's something you do all of the time. I can't see how these things aren't eventually going to be tied into some sort of GIS system eventually so the posted speed limits where you were crawling along would be easy enough to find.
Not using a turn signal when the vehicle turns might not be something this version can do (I confess, I no RTFA yet) but it shouldn't be that hard to do but yeah, it's not going to be perfect. It's going to miss things but it can't help but be a better system then "No sir, I never drive too fast, really."
And headlights not being turned on at night has always seemed like something that just shouldn't be able to happen. The last couple of cars I've owned popped the lights on automatically when it got dark. That shit should be mandatory standard equipment.
Well, off the top of my head it sounds to me like you're looking at a future where you're going to be driving one car on the highway and if you choose to participate in these kinds of events you'll need another car for that. One that's insured for just such a purpose. That's where this is headed I believe.
You're wrong. It's not about a reasonable level of privacy. It's about how you and I and everyone else out there operates a motor vehicle. I'm generally wary of things along these lines but the one area I welcome it just happens to be on the road.
There is a percentage of the population in the United States that seems to think there are no laws at all relating to how you drive a car. They're driving around paying almost no attention at all to what they're doing and they're wrong. The people who can't obey simple traffic laws are responsible for an enormous cost that every one of us paying for insurance has to share in. Fuck them.
You can bitch about it being a violation of your rights but you don't have a right to drive a car. It's a privelage and it can be taken away if it's abused. Your comparison to putting a camera in my house is just stupid. That would be a violation of my rights. Putting a black box in my car that rats on me when I drive like an asshole (and ensures I get charged for my insurance like one as well) is nothing more than placing a sharper focus on those who need to be paying more for their insurance because they cause more of the problems. The only people who need be worried about something like this are the ones who have it coming. The asshats.
You nailed it man. On top of everything else he also assumes that everyone else is so fucking stupid that they won't see right through his shit.
I have no mod points today or you would certainly have one.

If it had gone on any longer I'd have expected it to end with a money shot to a early 70's jazz guitar.
They figured it worked with the OS (Twice!) so why not stick with a proven strategy and went with "WWAD?".
What Would Apple Do?

Left lane speed limit vigilantes are worth it.
