How do you stop someone from making Beta tapes?

Well, now that's a good question and I'll try to explain what I believe is the simple answer to it. In the time period that this was taking place Sony owned the format lock, stock, and barrell. Ever see what happened to someone who tried to make game cartridges for an NES system when Nintendo was ready to take you to court for doing so without their approval? How about the people who own the patent for the Compact Disc format posturing about suing makers of copy protected CD's and preventing them from marking them as "Compact Discs" since they will not play in all compact disc players out there. Possibly Sony could not have prevented them from releasing movies on Beta but they could have made enough of a mess of it to change the cost of those tapes.

I think the point of this is that the people behind the VHS format were behind in the game at this time (Sony did have over a year with the market pretty much all to themselves before VHS machines started appearing) and they had no qualms at all about what content was on the tapes. It seems almost silly that Sony would have cared at the time too but they did and were prepared (or at least made a good enough show of being willing) to fight it.

"VHS" was the format that provided the least amount of friction for them so they went there.

It's not an Urban Legend. It's the simple truth and like I said, I remember it. Age does that for you.

  3. Close to the truth on Why VHS Was Better · · Score: 2, Informative

The simple fact is that VCR's (of whatever format) were expensive and so were the tapes and they needed a "killer app". enter porn. Sony, which controlled the whole ball of wax where Beta was concerned wanted nothing to do with porn. No licensing, no interest, no nothing. They didn't ever want to see the word Betamax on the cover of a porn movie and it seemed like a good idea. Trouble was that porn was the killer app for video recorders.

Rebuffed by Sony the guys who wanted to sell porn tapes for people to view in their homes (visionaries that they were) turned to VHS and the rest is history. Sure after the fight was over Sony went ahead and let porn movies be released on their precious tapes but it was too late.

That's the way it happened from someone old enough to remember it.

Ok, now I'm confused. Earlier in the day I posted a comment on the story about the OEone desktop page. I went to the site and read the article and noticed that they were calling the mascot for Penzilla "Tux" which sounds familiar and I pointed out that he didn't look a thing like the Tux I am familiar with.

I got moderated off topic. Now I take a different approach and find that I can't just state the obvious without being told to read the article. Obviously there will be no winning in this.

Though I don't think that the quotes you pointed to address the real problem which is that India could do countless other things to greater benefit than a moon mission.

I see your points but I think that "average slashdot reader" isn't going to see it that way.

Dual processors are sweet (I know I like both mine equally well) but not uncommon and certainly not as uncommon as they were a few years ago. Add to that the fact that it's been a little while since anyone in here got excited about a 1.25Ghz CPU.

DDR memory is also an improvement but then the majority of the people reading this aren't going to get excited about it's inclusion on the PowerMac. They've had it for some time over in the PC world. The faster system bus isn't going to impress them either for the same reasons.

Most of them already run a rock-hard Unix (ok, a lot of them) in the form of Linux.

As for the appearance I think in my case at least Apple is a victim of their own success. The Cube was amazing as were the original iMac and B&W PowerMac (as well as their successors in varying colors) and the new iMac is a beauty. This new slightly modifies Quicksilver has some improvements that aren't easy to miss but it's nothing really new to look at. It's more like putting a new front on the latest model car and calling it "redesigned". I know the changes are deeper than that but to the casual glance it's a new front panel on the old tower.

The previous Quicksilver looked better (and damned glad I got one) in my opinion and the "big news" this time is the startling lack of any "big news".

Now had they popped out a G5 running at 1.5-2Ghz then they might merit more attention. Had they brought something truly different looking even then you might have seen it on the front page. As it stands it's not really much worth mentioning.
