Well then I would obviously be correct then wouldn't I? Perhaps I was wrong in my original assertion. After all I deduced that you were not one based on very limited knowledge didn't I? Maybe you were correct and he wasn't one either.

Seriously though I simply meant that in a lot of places sysadmins are required or simply asked to do a lot of things that don't necessarily fall under the umbrella of the job description.

I don't think you are qualified to say that based on the small amount of information he provided you. I'll be damned if I'm not a sysadmin but I field questions like that all day long. It's easy enough to explain.

You start with a company that doesn't have a helpdesk. Maybe they're small or maybe they're cheap but they are out there and they are run by people who see everyone in IT as "the computer people" with very little distinction in their minds between what different "computer people" do.

Then you toss in the reason why any self respecting sysadmin would stay in a place like that. For me it's the fact that I have a great job with a ton of freedom to do things as I see fit. Partly it's because of the same people who think that while I'm here I might as well answer the stupid questions. They don't understand how this works and they don't want to understand how this works. They want me to understand how this works and to keep it working. And of course to tell them where to put their AutoCAD files.

Where I work I do the grunt stuff, the server stuff, run the friggin cables, set up the workstations, and basically take care of my users from cradle to grave. In my book you probably don't rate as a sysadmin. It's all relative.

Granted it's not on parr with Superman or The Hulk but he did get super angry and he did in fact kick the bad guys ass. Plus, on a smaller scale he completely went ballistic on Frankenstien's corvette earlier in the movie.

You can question the usefulness of his super power but you can't deny it's existence!

This is very correct. Buying a pre-made character is nothing more than an obvious sign that the game isn't interesting or compelling enough for you to want to build the character yourself. That would make the whole excercise pointless wouldn't it?

I'm not much into the UO's and Everquests but I do play Diablo II LOD and I know that the process is the whole reason you play. The end, when you are sitting there with a level 99 character is just gravy. That's why I never understood the people running around in D2 with a maphack. What's the point of just running from one spot to another and not actually seeing and playing large chunks of the game you paid for?

That and yeah, it's true that there are only so many really useful items in D2 but even when something isn't particularly useful I like to see something different drop. Even lower level Unique and Set items are interesting. Most players I see just want the godly stuff and dismiss the rest of the items as garbage. Not even interested in seeing them.

Yeah, granted Keanu doesn't work for this one in the least bit but Superman doesn't have a "I'm going to kick your ass" attitude either. He's tough to cast because he's this giant super powered boy scout. The guy to play Superman has to be unknown. He's got to have a body like Arnold on his best friggin day and the acting ability to pull off the part. Reeves had the face and acting ability but was always a little lacking in the physique department. Plus I thought he overdid the Clark Kent side and just played him a little too awkward. He was the closest to date though.

  20. Re:Amazed on Open Source Mac Game Programming Competition · · Score: 1

Maybe you should have just thought about your question some more before asking it? Granted there aren't as many games available for the Mac as there are for the PC but then you have to take into account the fact that most of the games out there are crap and that Windows users are pretty much just non-payed beta testers for companies that sell games. Windows folks get the game first in it's "releasable to the morons" unfinished state.

They buy it based on the paid for magazine reviews and the cool pictures on the box and then take it home to find out whether or not it was even close to being worth what they paid for it. If it's actually enjoyable then they play it between crashes until a couple of patches come out and eventually those consumers have something to show for their $$$. If it sucks they don't play it anymore and word spreads quickly. Patches may or may not appear at this point but it's not like it matters. The game company has their money thanks to the paid for ads and the cool packaging and the consumer isn't waiting for a patch to come out because the game sucks and they aren't playing it anymore.

Once all that is finished or at least has reached a point where an intelligent decision can be made about the quality of the product then work begins on a Mac version. We get ours a little later but it works and best of all the games released for the Mac aren't 90% rubbish. More like 90% great titles.

So we have a small % of the total number of games that are available for Windows but it doesn't really matter because we have 100% of the games that are WORTH having for Windows.
