In my opinion it comes down to basic rights and responsabilities: Corporations are given the rght to exist and are also given other special rights and protections and in return they have a responsability to add to the public good. CEOs become confused wether the "public" in question is their shareholders or their employees. I think we should make it clearer to them which public they should serve first. I'm to the point of recommending using a cattleprod to do it.
Corporations don't manufacture or sell goods in a vaccuum. There are a lot of hidden costs in commerce currenly underwritten by the citizens and we should make it clear to corporate America who is paying the loin's share of the bills.
I just hope the penalty is severe enough to make CAN Spam economically unviable. Either way, I doubt it will stem the flow of Spam from China and Africa.
A class I was taking last semester was being taught by a retired NASA program manager who mentioned the helium scarcity. Most of the world's helium is "mined" in Texas, so if this were handled correctly it could lead to quite the litte technology monopoly. OTOH, if helium were to become more scarce on earth I pretty sure someone would find an alternative source.
I heard this interview on the radio. Apparently the process doesn't save any energy. It doesn't use ozone depleting chemicals though. Unless it ends up being much less expensive to manufacture I doubt it will go anywhere.
I think this is at least partly being driven by Google's GMail. My parents used AOL long after they changes ISPs because of email access. I'mn betting there are plenty of AOL customers waiting to jump ship at the promise of a gig of mail space without the popups.
I hada guy next to me playing small tricks on me all the time. One day I got him back by turning over everyhing on his desk - from computer and monitor to all his files.
Another time is was unintentional. I emailed him one of those stupid little flash games where you shoot up your desktop with a noisy uzi. Right in the middle of shredding his desktop, in walks the VP of the company. At the time we were seated with our backs to the entrance so it took my friend a minute that the room had gone pretty much silent. What really added to this was the fact that he was the most paranoid about using his computer only for company business - and the one time he decides to screw off....
I think congress should vote more bandwidth into existance. I seem to recall something from math that talked about unreal numbers that aren't used much. I propose that Congress pass a bill allowing bandwith in the unreal number ranges since the real number ranges have been used up.
For example, according to the Economic Policy Institute, the five states losing the most jobs between 1993 and 2000 were, in order, California, New York, Michigan, Texas and Ohio. According to figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Illinois and Massachusetts also rank near the bottom, particularly when you take jobs as a percentage of population. The left-leaning EPI blames these losses chiefly on NAFTA, and perhaps that's partially the case. But aggressive tax and regulatory climates play a pretty big role, too.
Each year, CFO magazine asks financial executives to assess the business-friendliness of tax policy in their respective states, which the magazine then compiles and ranks. Ranking in the bottom 10? California, New York, Michigan, Texas, Ohio, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Illinois and Massachusetts -- the very states that seem to be bleeding jobs. The most recent unemployment figures from the Labor Department put California, Texas, Ohio, Illinois, and Michigan all in the bottom 10 there, too, all with unemployment rates at 7.0 percent or higher.
The primary role of the US Navy in peacetime is to keep the sealanes open. The only reason you can get those Reeboks for $30 is because the US ensures safe shipping throught the world. Even so, piracy is on the rise since most European nations have killed their navies and the availability of small watercraft in third word countries is greater.
I don't see too much insight here. Some answers are downright lame - like the "Lesser-known cases" question. Am I to take it that Mr. Godwin is too busy to answer with some detail or that the detail doesn't exist? Wipe out the name and the answers could have come from practically anyone with a casual interrest in DRM and property rights.
I you feel anger toward EV1 you may be misplacing you anger on the victim of a crime (extortion) rather than the likely perpetrator of a crime (SCO/Darl)
Wrong. Gambling like drugs (including alcohol) is ADDICTIVE. Addictive things cause people to become severly irrationsl and more likely to commit crimes to get their next fix. Drigs and gamblng weren't randomly legislatively controlled. We learned over time that they neededto be controlled.
As an adult you should be allowed to choose what happens to you.
The hidden fact missing is that addicts behaviour only effects themselves. I'd agree with you if we could tell the junkies to pack sand when they want medical treatment or put them to death for destroying other peoples lives or property. But we can't. That is the balance we have to live with.
I think sooner or later we need to draw lines. This might as well be it. This is a values based dicision based on many years of dealing with the corruption and addiction that pop up in the gambling industry. This goes to the heart of the philosophy that communities should have soem sayso in the culture they want to foster. Can't wait for the illegal drugs and kiddeporn WTO ruling.

I'm pretty sure this is how religions get started.

Recent industry reporting seems to indicate a big slump in the PDA market. The trend is toward devices that incorporate cell phone features.

With all these dam Google stories I'm starting to wonder if someone at Slashdot has a vested interest in Google.
As soon as you bop one in the head, two more pop up.

How did you get that ASCII past the content filters? Impressive.
Applaud his right to express his opinions.
Even if they are stupid.
Ain't America great!

A space story without Bush bashing? Is this a lefty holiday or somthing?
Throwing good money after bad. BTW, the ODU campus isn't really that big.

From the CATO Institute:
Do there happen to be any radar installations nearby?
