    In order to successfully run Linux you nead sendmail installed.

    Why?

    Because menny of the programs email the user who was running them when somthing goes wrong. ie vim

    Why is this diffrent from Microsoft.

    Any one can write a drop in replacement for sendmail as the API is well known and documented.

    Computer Programs have killed people in the past.

    The UK milatery has a fly by wire helecopter controled by a computer system called FADEC(sp?).

    Several years ago one of these crashed in scotland killing the heads of the N. Irland security forces.

    The milatery tryed to blame the pilot and co-pilot, both who died in the crash.

    The pilot and co-pilot's famalies tryed to get the desision over turned.

    Just recently the famalies won when a house of lords commity decided that the FADEC software was to blame.

    IIRC The GPL is abot redistributing and modifying the software. Not about using it.

    This is interisting. I've seen news papers talk up their redership this way in order to boost their advertising revinue.

    They do market research that, the results clame, says x people read every news paper the sell. This then allows them to increse the cost they charge for the adverts.

    You could also sight Penryth(sp?) Council who clame to has saved in xs of £150,000 by switching from Microsoft to Star Office and Sun.

    In your declaration you claim that it is necessary to use democratic rules in the use of IT as well and you conclude that therefore ".. it would almost be the duty of a democratic country to use free software".
    I conclude from that, that a country that does not use Linux must be undemocratic or at least does not fulfill its democratic duties.
    Is there no other free soft ware than Linux

    Having read what Jim Robinson is aleged to have posted. It would seem he has the same mind set as those he claimes to dispise.

    He claims that Free Republic was set up in order to allow people to report and discuss the issues of the day with out hinderence. Then as soon as the USA gets one terrorist attack he supends the rules and declairs that decent will no longer be tolerated.

    Comming from the other side of the Pond, yes I am British, this smacks of the knee jurk reactisonism we have come to expect only from our politishions.

    If Jim was in the UK I'd say he was gunning for a knighthood, do you have an equivalent over there?

    Any way I think he'll loose this one on the grounds that he has cencerd some of the posts so his argument about not being able to cencer others don't stand up.

    Of cause when G. doublya Bush gets to hear about this he might want to do somthing to help.
