No I am saying that A+ certification is akin to religion and not tech knowledge. To work in the computer business the less you understand about hardware and the more you can just say "WindowsXP is great and why do you want to run Linux anyway its for geeks" the more the chance of getting a job. The less you understand about how hardware and systems work the better. The same goes for.NET programmers they do not have to understand how assembly works, God forbid that they have any C skills.
By and large the high volume retailers (the ones who sell the most dollars in systems to small businesses) prefer to hire fresh A+ kids that have as little real computer knowledge as possible. They either tow the Microsoft hardware and software sales line or some other kid fresh out of the local college MS A+ course will replace them. That is the way things are in the world of Microsoft they control you from cradle to grave. Even the Chinese communists are starting to sound like they have a more democratic system of business.
Attention please find anon coward post has escaped lameness filter with disasterous secret SCO code. Resulting compilation proves Linux is actually a reverse engineering of SCO Unix, not a real operating system. For that matter any program or operating system using C is just a clone of the IP of SCO. Attention all OS resellers prepare to meet thy doom. Be prepared to apply to Utah as the computer software center for all program code, including grid computing on the internet. (I just said that to be somewhere near on topic!)
The reason why MS event handling is the way it is, is simple, the Win32 API uses common dlls so that programmers do not have to re-write functions. The problem lies when malloc gets mis-appropriated and function calls leave buffer overflows. This often happens because the programmer is essentially writing blind and trusting that their code will not conflict with a call to system dll. You are expected to code for Windows essentially blind as to how proprietary functions allocate.
The strength of open source is that if you do have a buffer problem you can find where it is happening, with MS you have to call home to Mama. So programmers just leave buffer overflows in their source, because to fix them they would need tech support from Microsoft. To fix them would be too time consuming.
It just means that the number of windows software pirates has increased in proportion to the number of useless lame web sites. I have no dought Win2003 is the spammers Os of choice. If one looks to the Orient software pirates prefer Windows server software because of ease of use, and the fact that it is easy to pirate. I believe I have read somewhere that the pirate trick is now by using a false verification web activation, and the law authorities are having real trouble keeping track of the pirates.
Gates might be having kittens but the 2003 licence sales are not reflected in the number that are poping up, like a weed on the outlaw net. This kind of software piracy is a direct result of MS pricing policies.
Microsoft may be trying to encourage poor countries to use their software by giving it away , to influence local authorities to crack down. They tried the other root (American strongarm political influence) and failed. So they tried the stick now they are trying candy.
Sorry I live too close to Redmond, in British Columbia and there is squat in the way of college courses for anything other than MS Access, and Visual.Net. I guess the mirmidons created uncle Bill and Co. have just made British Columbia and most of Canada a little fifedom. After they cloned WordPerfect what would you expect they even bought some dos windowing code in one hell of a hurry back in the early 80s from a guy in Quebec. Then proceeded to trundle on and steal the best people from our universities. Boy they hated having competition from Canada. They have effectively squashed all other forms of training in Canada, the funny part is we let them.
How do you effectively sell software for Linux. Retailers have given up. How do you effectively sell hardware for Linux boxen? Staples in Canada used to sell Linux other than Mandrake now they do not, Future Shop still has Linux software, but if you talk the sales rep (usually a fresh pimple faced MS a+), they are brain dead about simple things like good partion setups and hiding, necessary to effectively dual boot. Other retail chains (like Office Depot) do not even try to sell Linux and become quite hostile when you suggest that their tech knowledge sucks. Lets attack the real cause of the MS monopoly, it is not software. It is the MS hardware partner system that keeps retailers in line. We need to develope, through GNU, Oss, Osdn etc, a Linux friendly hardware and product certification sticker system that consumers wanting to give Linux a shot can trust. The idea of a happy penguin logo is not too bad.
After all that is the way MS, works you get assurance the the stuff you buy will work, then if the device sucks you have no one to blame but the manufacturer. If the North American retail and business market is to be addressed then the sale of Linux ware and tech help in retail need to be a focus for Oss people.
Don't give me any of that Bill Gates crap about everything being free and you cannot make money, there is no reason why software companies cannot use and improve Linux ware it is just that only the ones that offer effective customer support will thrive. In business that is the way it should be, not the current system "you have to use this software product because our hardware only runs this way!"
When the US economy takes a so called down turn it is not a huge suprise. The so called "growth" factor that our economy relies on for market business decisions is fundamentally wrong. There is no reason for economic models to be geared to constant growth. The tech sector fell into this trap in the 1990s.
The economic mumbo jumbo you hear and see everywhere in the US media is in stark contrast to reality. We have relaxed our environmental laws, beaten up on labor unions, sent jobs off shore to make consumer products cheaper, and still corporations are not satisfied. Why? Because constant growth in consumer spending is no longer possible.
The so called consumer is not getting wise to the Credit Card trap, essentially the cause of October 1929.
The engine of our economic growth has become the credit card, and the unrealistic expectations of the business world. The chickens are coming home to roost, first in the tech sector, then in all sectors if consumer credit continues to increase to unsustainable levels.
Raising interest rates will only precipitate the crash, so as the fed knows, it is caught in a terrible trap. The only solution perhaps is huge consumer credit default and mayhem.
Here we go again. We are listening for signals from Elvis! Why in Sam Hill would any self respecting Alien use radio waves at the speed of light. We are looking for the most primitive form of signals. There are signals travelling >C its just we do not now how to detect them yet.
EMR is not the only form of radiation. Einstien was wrong. One question, if a signal is travelling faster than C how do you tell? A radio might detect something in an extreemly short burst, but the signal would only be intellegable over extreemly long intercept distances.
Well it is all academic there is no body out there thinking about extra long array detection, with overall antenna length in the order of say from here to Mars. The individual stations would only pick up short static like burst, however if we are to decode faster than light signals we will need to experiment with signal decompression and time expantion of recieved data. Who knows we might even hear that Paul is dead by playing them backwards.
I wish it were true, but there needs to be effective software Linux training for it to succeed in North American business. I do not see any institutions teaching the Linux system as a replacement for MS Access. I can see that a logical replacement for Access is already in the Linux system itself. One could develope an integrated user multi-tasking, paging, db quiery system from what Linux already has available to root and extra Gnu sources.
The problem is business courses at all the accredited institutions are run exclusively by Microsoft trained people.
So until training in Linux user control, db quiery and simple software admin becomes common we here in North America will need to bow to Redmond six times a day. If we want to work in any form of business other than Inet Server Admin.
Too bad the business consumer is still reliant on antiquated PC architechture. The average consumer, wants to by a P4 for under 1000 bucks. So companies put a P4 into board and OS that is something similar to having Lily Tomlin answering the interupts! Hyperthreading is a good name especially if you look at the first word in the two word jargon (hype). Wow, I got 3ghrz but my system sucks.
I have seen good old quad P200 pros on Proliants that smoke by comparison. It will be interesting if the AMD guys get together with Asus and the likes to make a real multi processor smoker for the business market that can retail for under 2000. Problem is they are constrained by the need to build for i386 and WindowsXP! Until the Windows/Intel monopoly is broken the only real advancements in tech are going to come from the high end makers like CGI.

Yes you can just shut it down, but usually the process that has been spawned is order listed on the top line from right to left in the box when you ctrl/alt/del. Also shutting down the net immediately ( I just use a short cut to winipcfg in the start menue bar), then viewing the page source can be handy if you want to track the crap and whack them back with a flood of phoney info with a more powerfull OS. There are lots of ways to fight spam bots one of the best is to make their life hell. It is amazing what you can do to with simple scripts used in the right place, usually with the help of the original spam script. I have even heard of scripts that make the original turn around and report back its final destinations. This is achieved as a tag on that sends back each of the hops, tracing the source. I have never been able to achieve piggy back tracing but I have heard that there are some White Hats that are effectively doing in.NET spam bots.
Might not a problem solving algorythm be better served by a radical approach to AI? All this talk of programming to use more nodes in a cluster on a competitive basis is too simplistic.
If a program can be developed to search for code snippets then test them in a protected environment of its own we might be able to develope a more effective self directing algorythm.
What I am suggesting is like digital DNA but with the ability to search and test new code, then add desired functions to the core.
The real leap that will indicate true AI is if to desire functions can become a core function without intervention. Of course a sense of morals will need to be an overide to a function desire algorythm.
Essentially letting programs encorporate child functions that they spawn is key to this approach.
There is also the problem of deceptive add boxes that do not use a conventional interface. It does not matter which bit of the box you click it does a silent install of some piece of crap! With windows98 the best thing to do is control+alt+del the box DO NOT USE THE BOX EXIT! Learn to run your computer without a mouse. Either that or be a Windows sucker and send your 50-70 bucks a year to Symantec.
These MS inspired utilities are a consumer fraud. There is no reason why an OS should be effected by simple code. Look into the early history of MS system utilities and you might understand why SARC still exists. The need for add on antivirus utilities and a few other stupid system utilities could have been eliminated by Microsoft years ago. The reasons why they chose not to is a matter of speculation.
The deception that can deliver a virus over the net with the phoney exit button trick has been around for quite awhile. Use a real OS instead, that cannot be fooled by crap like that unless you are really stupid and always run as root.
Moose and Squirrel have secret language, of squirrel chirps and moose hmoos, cannot understand, trying super secret superduper decript machine.... Wait I am getting something , Very goood Badenoff....what are they saying?; Why do we have to use this stupid code Rockie every one around knows it is cracked.... I don't know Bullwinkle but it sure is going to be interesting, finding enough nuts stupid enough to talk on their phones........Arrest them immediately Boris!..
Will our friends escape the clutches of a determined Boris with his superduper decript machine? Tune in tommorow to watch the conclusion of MOSCOW IS LISTENING, or MUST EVERYTHING YOU READ ON SLASHDOT MAKE SENSE TO YOU?
well put but? How the hell will they sell their incredible online gaming software to servers that can't hop around quick enough because of spam traffic. All bets are off if the band width demands of online gamers+spam reach what are the predicted levels.
The game console sales are way higher than the online percentage of consol owners. If the MS gamers.net heaven vision does happen without a corresponding drop in spam traffic the good old/. effect will be meaningless. No one except perhaps Taco will get on.
Fact is that record labels are not what they appear. There are so many subset labels that the competition among producers is killing the big dollar part of the industry.
So if a producer wants more money for the label that is putting the bill for the band, then it is symptomatic of the certain Rock crash that is upon an overbloated industry.
People like ticket monster, studios, roadies, etc, all need a cut. If the producer is looking for more cash for a label it is because the costs have gotten out of hand. The crash of the Rock/Shlock/Pop industry will make the dot com fiasco look like a thunderstorm at a church picnic.
The time of independants is finally here. It will be a music revolution to rival recording in the first place. Musicians that can actually play and sing will start to take back what has been stolen from them by the industry, their creativity!
There is nothing more pathetic than a band that can only keep rehashing the old songs. Very few have the talent and drive to rise above the critics and create new ideas after they have been through the Pop Industry mill.
Allen Turing? What killed his genius. answer; Social convention and bigotry. The biggest killer of genius is peer pressure, caused by many things other than marriage! It also depends on who you marry. If Marie Currie had married a drunken lout then she might have not been a great scientist. The social structure of our public education where bigotry and pressures to conform are greatest cause many to lose interest. Not that private education is any better. What a new age science piece of crap.
Problems with package formats is the endless failed dependancy problems caused between different distros. Take a simple little apps like Kmol, a good simple little mol wieght calculator, it will run fine if you use the usual sane kde lib paths and do not suffer from rpm obfuscation disease. So I just make darn sure I read the deps to./configure --with before I compile from source. What I find rather disturbing is that good freeware is being made difficult to use by the constant path alterations by the major Linux distros RedHat and Mandrake. Another great example is Kstars a great fun astronomy app it runs like crap when installed in rpm binary format, but can really smoke with it installed correctly in KDE3 Slackware.
The constant changes, in path structure in RedHat even between close number releases is not a good thing. It is more akin to a Microsoft like tactic than sensible advancement of an OS.
Perhaps a killer app for linux would be a Pathmaker that reads dependancy requirements goes out and checks the install paths before you./config. Similar to gdb but easier to step through. Then it could help identify and rewrite any path errors in the source for the user. If the software determines that you do not have a required library then it could help the user to install or see if installing it might cause havock.
The current state of free software for Linux is becoming more and more difficult for the ordinary user to deal with. A logical tool designed to help the ordinary user to use source would sure be great. There are great dev tools in Kde and Gnome but there is a severe lack of a sensible integated install tool for non-coding users.
By and large the high volume retailers (the ones who sell the most dollars in systems to small businesses) prefer to hire fresh A+ kids that have as little real computer knowledge as possible.
