Ok, I admit this is 100% flamebait post, but I have to vent a little bit. Sorry, here goes.
Ok, bittorrent is officially the most overrated piece of technology ever. I love how slashdot posts torrent links to things that wget is perfectly capable of getting from the official website, which probably has more bandwidth than God. Torrent is only good for pirating movies, despited what anyone says, a fast ftp mirror is always better for downloading a linux distro. You'd be out of your damn mind to use torrent for shit like this.
Right now, I'm sitting here, trying to see if this torrent will work at all. It's downloading at a nice rate of 5k/second, and my upload pipe is maxed out. Way to go, bittorrent. I hope nobody needs anything from my webserver.
Anyways, I'm done for the time being. Thankfully, the godly wget will be able to help me out once the crappy python bt client fails.
I'm on a powerbook g3, 233Mhz, 160Mb of RAM. It runs a bit slow, but it's fast enough that I was able to give my 650Mhz Acer laptop away to my sister, who needed a machine. I have to say, I've had really -no- problems at all using this laptop, and I have to wonder what type of technical problems people are experiencing. OS X even runs fast enough for pretty much everything that I do, and although I plan to buy a faster machine in the future, this one is more than sufficient to run OS X in the time being.
I think the difference is that while a few hundred years ago, most people did believe that evolution was heretical, and that opinion has (for the most part) changed since then. However, I think there's no question about the fact that a few hundred years ago, or hell, even back to as long as recorded history goes, humans have questioned the morality of killing and warfare.
I find it rather startling that you seem to believe that popular opinion as to the "social acceptability" of war will change any time in the near future. Though, given the course of recent history, it's pretty easy to see how easily people can separate themselves from the reality of war (ie, killing people) to achieve a particular end.
Although I don't attend college there, I come from Colorado. The University of Colorado a few years ago decided to launch a rather risky proposal which is kind of along the lines which you are discussing here. Basically, they had a problem, which was that following football games, makeshift armies of liquored-up frat boys would tear through the city, celebrating the victory of their said sports team with a wave of destruction.
The city of Boulder was not pleased, and they passed the so-called "couch law", which forbade residents from keeping couches and other indoor furniture outdoors (during the riots, couches were a very frequent and ready source of burning material). However, most of the couches didn't come from student housing, and the city residents got pissed. The school, in turn, reacted by raising tuitions for a so-called "riot tax", which would help to reimburse the city for the cost of riot-cleanup.
Naturally, students were now pissed. But since the school had no foolproof way of singling out specific individuals responsible for the crimes, they had no choice but to bill everyone. Given that most rioters were students (but most students were not rioters, mind you), this seemed pretty fair, imho.
Now, the only difference I see between this, and the present situation is that a riot has a fairly undisputable price tag. You can find out exactly how much damage was caused, and there's really no arguing the numbers. However, with "stealing" music, the damage isn't so concrete. It's a matter of potentially-lost-income, which is a debate I dare not redrudge up on slashdot.
So as a student, I would be willing to pay a bill to my school in the event that my school were actually sued in court for damages caused. But, I have no intention for paying a yearly bill which essentially boils down to the music industry shaking the good old money tree and seeing what falls out.
Ok, I would be willing to convert my network to IPv6, but where do I begin? I use DSL, and have a static IP. How do you (a) get a block of IPv6 addresses, and (b) get your ISP to actually connect them to you?
After watching my ten year old son struggle while learning to drive an automobile, I think the question should be repharsed, "Based on the ability of small children to handle heavy machinery, is there any chance that we'll ever have a car truly catered to the ability of kids."
As tempting as it is to get on the "information superhighway", maybe we need to admit that some people just have no business being there. If you can't handle using windows, you're probably not going to do well with any "intuitive" interface.
Until iTunes music store starts to carry music that is at least -somewhat- off the beaten path, I'm not going to subscribe. Here is a brief summary of my last iTunes store experience:
1 Hrm...iTunes music store. 0.99$ sounds about right. Been meaning to pick up that new autechre album, anyways. 2. Search "autechre": returns 0 results. 3. Hey, that's a bummer. Lets see if they've got anything else. 4. Search "boards of canada": 0 results. 5. wtf 6. Search "aphex twin": 0 results. 7. wtf * 2 8. Ok fuck this. Preferences->Deactivate iTunes music store.
Maybe this has changed since last time I was on, but the selection sucks. Maybe autechre and boards of canada might be considered 'obscure', but aphex is on a major label and is quite well known. Until the iTunes store evolves from yet another place to buy eminem's music, I'm not putting any money into it.
Wow, a bit high and might of him to declare such a thing, perhaps?

Not to nitpick, but it might interest you to know that in Jurassic Park, Lex is actually using a Unix system. Good bit of geek trivia. ;)
we kindly submit this slashdotting for your request!
Because sooner or later, you'll get owned. The worm will mutate into a virus, and some asshat will open it with OE, and your LAN will be toast.
Don't assume that just because you can control the gateway that you can protect yourself from "someone else's problem".

Well, good thing all my used gear was lifted from busted dot-coms. ;P
Anyone know where you can buy some of these shirts online?
You're goddamn right your sig is lame!
j/k =P

That's why I gave up on sarcasm on the net. Whenever you say something you think no one would take seriously you find people do.
Are you being sarcastic here? I can't tell!
You've got 3 freaks now, and I added you to my Foes list cos your sig was fucking lame.

If your ISP doesn't support IPv6, are you SOL?
Rather ironic words, coming from a band that was responsible for booting napster users for filesharing....

Who's playing quake2? Where?
Not to get too far OT, but isn't it set up such that only one gun has the actual bullet, and the rest have blanks?
Correct me if I'm wrong....
MS Windows is a BSD? Am I missing something? /me checks out c:\winnt\ports
First person to post the "BSD is dying" troll gets a nice big KNUCKLE SANDWICH!
"Here Jack, take these magic beans."

The question is, did CD sales increase in this timeframe too?
Call me cynical, but I bet not.
ask me in twenty minutes.
I love people that start their posts out with "Wrong!". I was instantly convinced!
