I have to say that the most convincing argument for buying things on vinyl (for which a rather large amount of music is still available on this medium) is that vinyl is a 100% analog medium. Now, regardless of the sound difference here, you're guaranteed not to have to deal with the copy-protection-scheme of the week that the music industry uses to try to screw over their customers. You buy a piece of music plain and simple and you know it's gonna work.
A large number of punk bands (and yes, I fully acknowledge that Pearl Jam isn't punk) release their music on vinyl. It's just part of the tradition of punk...better cover art, full lyric tabs, and cheaper (about 10$ per LP, even online). I buy a large amount of new music on vinyl for these reasons, and I really wish that a lot of bigger bands like Pearl Jam would continue to press.
No CD turntable has been able to accurately replicate the feel and sound of scratching a record (which I guess isnt' really important in a lot of electronic music, but that's a technicality). Nevertheless, I eagerly await the day when professional DJ's are willing to part with Technics SL1200 turntables for iPod's or CD turntables.

This report seems a bit outdated, don't you think? A lot of technology has come along since 1996. From what I've heard, the current Ricochet network can go quite a bit faster than 30K/sec.
Having worked for Ricochet this summer, I can say that they've spent a lot more time really thinking about their business plan and marketing strategies rather than rushing in like the old dot-coms. I've heard that a small subscriber base is starting to develop, and the Ricochet technology is being used (experimentally) by the fire and police departments for roaming internet access.
Hopefully, Ricochet will manage to do at least -somewhat- better than Metricom did, though seeing how they conducted themselves, they feel quite a bit more responsible than the archetypical dot-com business.
Gigs: Here's an email I got from someone that wrote me regarding the/. spider that I thought was rather insightful:
Seeing the top posters is a feature I would have liked to have seen, but there's a good reason they don't do it. It's the same reason they now hide the Karma -- they don't want to turn it into a game of who has the most messages.
With that being said, I don't think it matters that I pissed/. staff off or not...they're prolly not gonna do it on their own. Better start coding.;)
Ok, for the last 7 or so months my left eye has become blurry for no apparent reason. No head injury or illness or anything of the sort. Basically, I just woke up and everything was fuzzy in one eye...the same level of fuzzyness for all distances. I went to an optometrist and he said he didn't know what was wrong, and referred me to another optomotrist I never went to. So, I ask the/. community....
What the hell is wrong with me?
Brain tumor
Chip placed by aliens interfering with brain waves
Eye gnomes came during the night and hit me atop the head
So, I guess what they say about masturbating too much is true!
Just plain nuts I would greatly appreciate any feedback from the/. community as my life rests in the balance from your comments.
Yeah, I couldn't agree with you more here. Look at commercial, privatized radio...it's like 60% advertisements (perhaps 30% advertisements and 30% ads thinly vieled as songs). Think about email...about 1/3 of email is spam. What's gonna happen when you combine these two together?
Well I've got some karma points to burn on this fine Monday, so tell me this....is this nothing but a thinly veiled excuse for a troll? I mean, there have got to be better ways of finding info than "Ask/." (well not if you're dumb).
But yes, congrats. This is the first real troll I've seen on the frontpage for awhile.
Yeah, my school forces everyone to get laptops, too. They're not bad, but I disliked being forced to get their specific model. However, I learned later on that this policy is because it makes the laptops easier to service...if the laptop techs want to make any headway, they'll do so by learning the most about the laptops that the students use, rather than trying to support any creature that walks in. And if they're giving them away, all the better.;)
Most CD stores will let you listen to albums in the store (well, the big chains like sam goody and such really only let you listen to the 'sponsored' album in the store). But generally speaking, you can both support your local store and your favorite artists at the same time here. Saying, "Well I didn't wanna buy any CD's because all the music sucks" is a cop-out.
Windows doesn't really have a good system of labeling releases, and I'm sure that the people running this website don't wanna do this for every service pack available for most microsoft products.
Seriously, though, I don't think there's any question it will become a huge advertising haven. And why shouldn't it be? Kids are pretty much swamped with advertising information to the point that they can't grasp the concept of life without it (not being melodramatic here). Modern society has become so oversaturated with corporate glory that it is pretty realistic to expect that the internet is no different (if you don't believe me, fire up IE at let it go to msn.com sometime).
I guess the point of my little rant is that technology has really become almost exclusively the realm of the corporation. If you want to avoid advertising, it is best to seek information through other means.:/
This is such a hopelessly short review that I have no idea what the commenter actually thought of the film. I've really been anticipating this one, too...the 1972 solaris is one of the greatest films I think I've seen. Well, can't troll too much here...at least Katz didn't write this review.;)
Ok, I'm probably going to get modded down for saying this, but what's up with this increasing trend of/. being a forum for software release announcements? I might be mistaken here, but that's what freshmeat does on OSDN, iirc. I think as far as the/. community is concerned, seeing releases for new kernels and new mozillas are the only pieces of software that people really care about. Beyond that, how many people are going to rush out and download the new postgresql (not even a major version increase, anyways).
With dozens of operating systems and hardware configurations to choose from, the PC market also appears to be flooded. Do any slashdotters out there actually use their computers, or is it more of a geek status symbol?
dood your stupid website is down again. where am I gonna get my friggin' porn?!?! ;)
I don't think the gloves are gonna help me be more obstanant and stubborn.
Scam artists track down you!
Link is down. Got a mirror?
