Because they own the rights to the songs, the songs aren't based on a commercial song, and have a different pattern than RIAA songs and also lack a DRM copyprotection scheme.
I am sure the Slashdot Geek Army can design a better smart parking meter than this one.
First have an option to buy a parking pass for $100 a month, place it on the rearview mirror to avoid getting a ticket. But no, the Police station wants to earn revenue so that idea won't work.
Second issue parking meters with solar panels and can accept coins or a debit card or credit card swipe. It has a Wifi connection and a web camera to monitor the parking. The solar panel charges a battery that is used at night. You can also use your mobile phone or hand held device to access the city web site and enter in the parking meter ID number and pay that way via Paypal or via bank account, debit card, credit card, and set up an account with the city.
Wouldn't it be great if someone invented open source software and open source technology to make these meters, so they could be made cheaply enough that cities can afford them without that ghastly 75 year lease?
Fiction makes sense and is more believable than the truth.
Everyone has their own version of the truth, but none can prove their own version of it over the others.
How can one tell the color of the sky if they are colorblind or just plain blind? How can they know the truth if they cannot see it?
As we learn more and more the truth tends to change doesn't it? What we though was true 100 years ago may not be true today. At one point we didn't know what decimals were or the number zero, and later on we learned new math skills to deal with them. The truth tends to evolve with each new discovery.
A complex truth is hard to describe and answer. Like where did all of the matter and energy in this universe come from if science says matter and energy cannot be created nor destroyed only converted from one form to another. Maybe the Grand Unified Theory cannot be proven until new forms of matter and energy are discovered and maybe even a missing force or more missing forces to complete the universal model.
All protocols but HTTP are capped to 1/3 speed, and within the HTTP realm some Web sites and services that use lots of upstream bandwidth are capped as well. So far UPC is hiding behind the usual excuse: 'We are protecting all the users against the 1% of the user base who abuse our network.'"
Well IMAP, SMTP and POP3 are not HTTP protocols, nor is IRC, or IM programs, or video game clients like Wow etc. I also assume Google Earth will be slower as well as Antivirus programs doing updates will be slower and OS updates will be slower as well. Forget VPN connections, they will be slow as well, so people working at home will suffer while what they do is 100% legal and required for their job.
This is a really stupid move and it will slow down more than just P2P File Sharing, which clever Dutch users will set the BitTorrent open ports to port 80 to avoid the slowdown and get around it anyway.
I think there are more than 1% of the users who use file sharing, and file sharing use is not always illegal, free and open source torrents for Linux distros are downloaded via BitTorrent, but now will be slowed. Musical Artists that are independent and submit FLOSS format of their recordings which were legal would be slowed down as well.
when we get a Slim version of the PS2 it tends to overheat. When they make a smaller version, they tend to leave out a fan to cool it down. Which is why add on fans to the case are designed by third parties or people put small external fans near the open areas of the case.
Now if it was something as simple as a Commodore 64 on a joystick it wouldn't need a fan as the Commodore 64 technology reduced to a chip does not draw that much heat as an XBox 360, PS3, Wii, or modern game console.
My point was that Carter had bad things happen during his administration just as Bush did.
I didn't say you said Bush was bad, this whole thread was that Bush was the worst President. I gave examples of Carter and Taft. But it seems you defended Carter and ignored Taft.
You mean like the Asian Times? A Non-US entity? with the story?
Iranian President Mahmud Ahmadinejad has demanded apologies from the US as essential for smashing the wall of mistrust between Iran and the US. He has a point.
If president Jimmy Carter had apologized to Iran for the fact that the US since president Harry S Truman supported Mohammad Reza Pahlavi - aka the shah of Iran - and his tyranny; if he had promised not to subvert the Iranian revolution; and if he had committed to give back to the country the up to US$60 billion stolen by the shah, his family and acolytes, the infamous Iranian hostage crisis would have been solved swiftly.
That is the Iranian point of view, not Fox News, and not the Neocons or Liberals.
Now why would the Iranians claim that, and blame Jimmy Carter? How come they don't mention that Carter negotiated the hostages release? They stated the terms that Carter had to meet to release the hostages, and that Carter didn't meet them.
The rest of the world has a different history than the Liberals and Neocons in the USA have.
Oh yeah Rockefeller and Kissinger influenced Carter like Dick Cheney and Karl Rove influenced Bush, by pressuring them to make decisions, yet Bush is vilified for that and Carter isn't? Isn't it the same exact thing? Thank you for proving my point.
You can read all about it on the internet. It might open your eyes.
Yeah on a pro left-wing blog, I got my information from history books with a neutral point of view that were reviewed for accuracy.
The Internet is not always accurate and any article may be biased by the left-wing or right-wing authors.
Just as you can claim Fox News has a right-wing bias, so can you prove that Moveon.org and other liberal blogs that they run and create are also biased but in a left-wing sense.
You do admit the Middle-East problems happened during Carter's watch, as did the hyper inflation, double digit unemployment rate, recession, high gas prices, and hostage crisis.
Ronald Reagan is vilified for the Iran-Contra Scandal in which it is said that he traded weapons in exchange for getting the Hostages released. But if what you said was true, and Carter negotiated the release before Reagan took office, then the whole Iran=Contra scandal is false.
Well then change how the Olympics and other athletic games are played.
Have a Men's division for the XY chromosome.
Have a Women's division for the XX chromosome.
Have a Others' division for the different genetics that cannot be determined to be a male or female, or maybe be both or some genetic anomaly. Call it the MultiGender class.
Yeah a simple DNA test, have all applicants submit DNA samples before they are classified to verify for each category. That way there won't be something like hormone therapy or performance boosting drug taken to medically treat the genetic disorder in the Men's and Women's division and the MultiGender class can be the one that that is legal for it as it is a medical condition.
Either that or make it Andy Kaufman style and change it to the Intergender Olympics and Intergender Athletic and let anyone of any gender compete with each other.
You've heard of offshoring labor to a foreign nation for a lower cost in labor?
International Corporate Evolution is the new trend. When in a nation with a bad economy offshore the entire company to a richer nation like in the EU that has a lower corporation tax and a lower tax on the wealthy.
You see labor needs to be offshored to the lowest cost third world nation like China, India, Thailand, Russia, where the cost of labor is low. That is the first step in International Corporate Evolution.
The second step is to expand your business to a foreign nation to compete with other corporations in foreign nations. If a company does not do that, foreign companies might move to their nation and buy them out (ala Anhiesier Busch Beer) or expand and build a company right next to yours and try to shut yours down. It is like a game of corporate chess, you need to move a piece to their location before they move a piece to your location and checkmate you.
The third step is to offshore highly talented employees (like with PHDs and tons of experience) and management to a nation that is wealthy and has a good economy but has lower corporation taxes and lower wealthy taxes. Move the bulk of your local company to that nation and downsize any employees that aren't as valuable.
The fourth step is closing down buildings in the local nation that has the bad economy and high taxes.
The fifth step is moving back to that nation after the bad economy has recovered and tax rates have been cut again and bringing the talent back with you. But if the economy does not recover and the tax rates are not cut, this is like a strike against the government to offshore the entire company to punish them for higher taxes and ruining the economy.
Then you haven't met Jimmy Carter or William Howard Taft.
Taft was one bad mother... shut your mouth... who did even worse than Bush did.
Jimmy Carter created the whole Middle East hating us and the rise of Fundamentalist Islamic Terrorists in Iran because of his foreign policy which lead to students in Iran taking US hostages. Because he messed up the rescue mission to get them back and had Hyper Inflation and high gas prices, and a large unemployment rate, Ronald Reagan was elected. Why do you think "The Simpsons" refer to him was "History's Worst Monster"?:)
To be honest exporting US jobs to foreign nations has been going on for a while now.
Jimmy Carter did it to export jobs to Mexico and Canada. Gave Japanese Automakers a cut in the import tax to compete with US auto makers as well.
Ronald Reagan did it for manufacturing jobs to be moved to Mexico and overseas.
George H. W. Bush did it with moving more jobs overseas than just manufacturing.
Bill Clinton signed NAFTA and ASEAN and other trade deals to offshore Engineering and IT jobs to India, China, Russia, Eastern Asia, etc. It lead to the Dotcom Busts as Engineering and IT employees that lost their jobs tried to found new Internet based companies to avoid losing their jobs to overseas competitors. Also Clinton raised the cap on H1B Visa Workers.
George W. Bush did all of the above and more, and even offshored jobs to Iraq to help jump start their economy.
Barrack Obama hasn't been in office long enough to pass such a bill. He claims he will create jobs in the USA as part of his Stimulus package but we cannot prove it one way or another yet. It is too soon to tell. One way to do that is to cut down on H1B Visa quotas, and repeal the Foreign trade bills and put a tax on companies that offshore work. But we haven't seen that yet. Obama claims to create Green Jobs, but we haven't seen that yet either. But in creating Green Jobs it means the Classic Jobs that aren't Green will have to go away. That means people need more education and more training and certification. Obama promises to pass an education bill with federal public student loans, and graduates can work for the government or a community organization for ten years and have the student loan paid off. Which to me sounds like he plans to create government and non-profit organization jobs. So to be honest I think Obama is trying to create jobs in the USA. We must wait and see if any jobs are created.
like any 733t H@ck3r would use Internet Explorer, and risk being kicked out of their group.
Did you check to see if they were even using Windows? Chances are if not then IE isn't even available to them, but Firefox and Opera are. Maybe that is because Firefox and Opera are cross platform and IE isn't (except for a Mac OSX port that is fugly, but then why install IE for OSX when Safari is way better?) available on Linux, BSD Unix, etc.
What is the point of a HHGTTG book if it is not funny? Is the Ghost of Andy Kaufman writing it, and the joke is on the readers? Is it more of a Political Book now instead of a Humor Book?
It is like a Stephen King book that isn't scary and has no horror elements in it and uses adverbs to describe things instead of actions taken by the characters and all of the other stuff Stephen King doesn't do.
It is like a Stephen Hawking book that is unscientific and tries to convince people to give up science and technology and join the Amish.
Then you should try eating Ravioli or Toasted Ravioli.
It is a trick we play on children in St. Louis, MO when they refuse to eat spinach. As it turns out Ravioli has spinach in it, but most people don't know that nor do they taste it when they eat it. When the child won't eat regular Ravioli in St. Louis they invented Toasted Ravioli which seems to have more success at being eaten by a child or even an adult.
Of course the side effect is eating too much makes one fat, so eat it in moderation.
It is the same trick to get a dog or cat to take medicine, you put the medicine in meat or their food, and they eat it.
Cheerios was a good trick to get children to eat enough fiber in their diet by making it a part of breakfast. It is the same trick to get people to eat enough oats.
Star Wars is a 2010 remake of the classic 1977 science fiction film, Star Wars. The movie features the main characters of the original; however they are portrayed by a new cast in a revamped plot, featuring pioneering, overused special effects. The narrative follows Luke Skywalker (Zac Efron) as he escapes his homeworld of Tatooine and joins Obi-Wan Kenobi (Sean Connery), Han Solo (Dennis Quaid) and Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew) to rescue Princess Leia Organa (Julia Roberts) and her hair (portrayed by two Cinnabons) and save the Rebel Alliance from the evil Darth Vader (Jeremy Irons) and Emperor Palpatine (Ralph Fiennes).
The remake was made when George Lucas felt a need to revive the Star Wars franchise in a way more graceful than Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Lucas also noticed the recent revival of other old science fiction franchises, such as Star Trek. He felt that a remake of the original Star Wars would be a win-win: he would not have to invent new ideas, but the audience would be treated to a new, revamped, overhyped version of the movie in return for some additional profit for Lucas himself. The remake, unfortunately, fared even worse than The Clone Wars, despite its conspicuous lack of Jar Jar Binks.
Yet somehow when I post about this, I get marked down as a troll.
Do Slashdot moderators have a politcal bias as well?
Yeah you might have a point that it could be unlawful, but trying to sue a company that big would take a lot of legal fees and you'll end up settling out of court for a smaller fee to avoid millions of dollars in legal fees due to the other side doing delays and other tactics.
Uh no, actually. The Do Not Call List has loopholes that allow debt collectors to make phone calls. Also charities and survey companies are exceptions to call as well.
I have a number that used to belong to someone else, I keep getting calls for that person. I keep telling people that person does not live here, and then they ask if they could talk to me (as if I was the person pretending to be someone else or something) and I told them no, that person does not live here, please stop calling.
Thing is he signed up for business with many companies and they still think he has the same number. They claim they have a right to call because they are debt collectors. I cannot get an address out of these companies, they want a bank account or credit card to pay off the debts.
I also found out that some companies are both debt collectors and telemarketers, so when they call to collect a debt, and find out they got the wrong number, they use the loophole to try to sell me something, even won't take no for an answer and I end up hanging up on them after telling them not to call back here.
Invent gun holders that can see around corners via telescope and infrared cameras and hold a pistol or rifle so it can be fired around corners.
Then again throwing a Throwbot instead of a Grenade means less innocents are killed that way, what if you have innocents in the other room who aren't armed and are hostages or used as human shields? Throwing a grenade means the innocents die as well, throwing a Throwbot gives you another view to take sniper shots with and only kill the armed enemy and leave the innocents alone and alive.
That is because most web sites, newspapers, Wiki sites, forums, blogs, magazines, and other media has a liberal bias. They consider a neutral point of view to be the liberal one.
Which is why they can bash Bush as much as they want, and not even remove the pictures citing copyright violations, because Bush is a Neocon/Conservative, and when people do the same to Obama, obviously it is handled differently.
It is unethical, but not unlawful, it is discrimination, but discrimination by political beliefs is not covered by the US Constitution. It violates free speech and freedom of expression, but Flikr is a private company so they can act like Communists or Fascists or whatever and censor as they see fit.
Expect to see more of this type of behavior as long as a Liberal is President. Even if Obama's ratings drop as low as Bush, they will still pull out pictures of him on Flikr and other web sites that bash him.
Suddenly Conservatives, Neocons, Libertarians, and other right-wingers are going to lose a lot of rights, including Talk Radio and Cable TV shows with the new Czars that have been appointed. Russia got rid of their Czars, but in the USA we keep getting more and more of them, answerable to nobody except maybe Obama, in violation of the checks and balances our founding fathers set.
I want to be able to do more than read Comic Books with a reader program. I want to be able to read PDF, ODF, RTF, HTML, CHM, and other formats that eBooks come in.
If I buy a PSP or Slim PS3, I want an educational value for it as well as a gaming one. I want more than a Language Tutor program or BrainAge, I want to be able to read eBooks as well.
I am sticking to a PS2 because the PS3 price is too high and they took away backwards compatibility with PS2 games on most PS3 models. I might as well buy a Wii because it runs GameCube games, or an XBox 360 with a hard drive that can run XBox games. Sony really needs to learn a lesson here to run legacy software like the others, or risk losing these console wars.
No more Rootkits either, ok? Sony we are sick of them.
since Microsoft will soon stop XP support and updates, and refuse to patch any more security exploits. We might as well run Windows 95, 98, ME, 2000 because Microsoft don't update those systems anymore either.
At least Windows 7 Pro has an XP virtual machine, but we don't know how compatible it is yet.
Windows 7 is a Service Pack to Windows Vista practically, and it is like when Windows XP came out as a Service Pack to Windows 2000. Windows 2000 was version 5.0 and Windows XP was version 5.1, Windows Vista is version 6.0 and Windows 7 is version 6.1.
Since Windows XP was better than Windows 2000, we figure that Windows 7 will be better than Windows Vista.
Sadly a lot of XP machines will need RAM upgrades if not video and hard drive upgrades to run Windows 7 as I heard even 1G of RAM is not enough and that Windows 7 is a bit of a hard drive and resource hog like Vista is, because XP runs faster because it has less features and fewer services that start up upon bootup. Windows 7 tries to make it for it by having faster graphics effects, and making use of dual core or multi core technology. Most Windows XP installs don't make use of dual core or higher systems as one has to by the non uniprocessor version of XP to use more than one core or processor.
The underlying storyline of Space: 1999 centered on the plight of the inhabitants of Moonbase Alpha following a calamity on 13 September 1999. A huge nuclear waste dump on the far side of the Moon detonates in a massive thermonuclear explosion, initiated by the buildup of magnetic radiation which was released, causing a nuclear chain reaction. The force of the explosion causes the Moon to be sent hurtling out of Earth's orbit and into deep space at colossal speed, stranding the 311 crew members[5], in effect becoming the "spaceship" on which the protagonists travel, looking for a new home. During their interstellar journey, the Alphans encounter a vast array of alien civilizations, dystopian societies, and strange phenomena previously unseen by man.
Actually the older the software, the easier it is to make copies and put it on multiple machines. Once the software reaches online activation, it cannot be copied so easily without beating the activation scheme.
Anyway as it turns out Microsoft is giving away free downloads of MS-Word 5.5 for MS-DOS so that old systems can run it for free. The direct download link is here in EXE self extraction format. It is the Y2K fix for MS-Word for DOS 5.5 and under and released as a new version instead of a patch or update. Microsoft felt that releasing a full DOS version would be easier than update older versions of MS-Word for DOS going back to Word 1.0 and up to 5.5. So those still using DOS or looking for a DOS word processor can take advantage of MS-Word 5.5 for DOS for free.

I'm all for it if it saves lives.
Most Windows XP installs don't make use of dual core or higher systems as one has to by the non uniprocessor version of XP to use more than one core or processor.
sounds like the Battlestar Galactica remake on SciFi ir SyFy network. Human looking Cylons.
That's the worst that can happen, right?
What if we have a Space: 1999 type problem:
