You want a RAID controller that is properly reviewed, one that has been proven to be stable. One that has good driver support and a good warranty. You want the same with your hard drives that data will be stored on.

I am not sure why you want FAT32 drives, is it because you are running an old version of Windows that does not support NTFS? Most moden Linux systems have NTFS support built in if not an option to load, just read the FAQs for your version of Linux and look for how to add in NTFS support. Unless you have software that breaks on NTFS and needs FAT32 (like old video games and software applications with anti-piracy technology that only works with FAT32 and not NTFS), you should really use NTFS for your hard drive format.

You need more than just RAID drives, you need a backup solution. Either use DVD-RW disks, or buy a Tape drive, or have an older system you can set up a network share and copy data files over to it, or a USB hard drive or thumb drive.

Cloud computing is a service, but there is software involved, one of the definitions is software as a service. For example, Microsoft can have something like Live Office which is MS-Office as a service, and host it out for $99/year per user verses the cost of buying MS-Office 2007 for $399 or whatever it costs, and then host the user's Office file formats on their servers as well with an option to download. Prices may be different than what I gave as an example. But Google Documents offers the same service for free.

Could Computing is simply a service provided over the Internet that is scalable and virtualized.

In short the software is in the web browser, while the data is stored somewhere else like on the servers. The word "Cloud" is a metaphor for the Internet.

This is not just an ordinary web application, it usually involves a virtual machine of some sort so that the web applications acts like a desktop application within the web browser. One that can be scaled to handle an almost unlimited amount of users.

So for example the PHPBB2 Forum software is a web application, but not a Cloud Computing application. Google apps, on the other hand works via a virtual machine and software as a service so it qualifies for cloud computing applications. Google apps do GMail, Word Processing, Spreadsheet, etc in the web browser under a virtual machine but the data is stored on Google's servers.

The reason why open source developers don't support cloud computing is because they feel that it locks the users into third party technology and exposes their data across the Internet in violation of privacy that others could spy on it or capture it via packet sniffers. So OSS developers try to avoid making cloud computing applications as a matter of personal ethics, etc.

For DOS support most people just use DOSBox but it has no printing support. For example Wordperfect 5.1 for DOS runs in it, but since it has no printer support, just select Postscript for a printer and then use Ghostscript or some other Postscript program to drop the Postscript data file on to print it out. After Microsoft went to the Windows NT and up and left the Windows 9X platform, it broke a lot of DOS applications. DOSBox is cool, as it even supports Tandy 1000 standards so that means those DOS video games that selected CGA or Tandy graphics can be played in Tandy mode. That was before EGA and then later VGA was invented.

Retrocomputing is more than just a fad, for some that have "legacy software" issues they have to use older hardware and older operating systems, or run older operating systems in virtual machines and/or emulators.

The cost of upgrading "legacy software" to Windows Vista or even Windows 7.0 standards is too high and too difficult for most software companies, plus Windows Vista broke a lot of software development tools including some old versions of Visual Studio as recent as 2002 or 2003. There is a lot of software that businesses need, that cannot be converted to run on Vista or 7.0, which is why Microsoft has that XP Virtual Machine, but they futzed up the XP Virtual machine and it is not 100% XP compatible. Mono was great for porting Visual Studio projects to Linux, etc. Mono supports the C# and Visual BASIC languages.

When you are a Windows developer that writes software for Windows, you usually use Visual Studio and C# or Visual BASIC as your primary language and like to take the code you write and port it to other platforms. Novell Mono made that possible, with a few rewrites of Form code as Windows Forms are not part of Mono. Windows developers use Visual Studio because Microsoft gives them a discount on it and even bundles it as part of the MSDN Microsoft Development Network subscription program to get Microsoft operating systems and development software and applications at a discounted rate for developers.

Visual Studio is easy to program in because the IDE is as easy to use as a paint program and you just drag and drop objects to create the Forms needed for the application, Delphi and other languages had about the same type of IDE. So an open source alternative would need an IDE that is just as easy to use as the Visual Studio and Mono IDEs.

I had planned to develop software for Windows under Visual BASIC 2005/2008 and then port it to Linux and Mac OSX using Novell Mono. But now I cannot if Richard Stallman says not to use Mono and I had planned on an open source version using Mono. So now what Visual BASIC code I wrote is useless and I'll have to rewrite it in a different programming language. Thanks Richard Stallman, I can see why you are the Saint of Open Source Software now. :)

Good thing I got some Python, C/C++, and Java skills, even if they are older skills I haven't used in a while. I have to give up my Visual Studio and Mono IDE easy to use crutch, and I hope I find an IDE for an approved Open Source Programming Language that I can use easily, without a huge learning curve and adapt to a different language.

Basically my Visual BASIC skills are now obsolete for Open Source Programming. This will either force me into close sourced code, or a different programming language I am not as good in for open source code. I've spent almost 17 years on Visual BASIC programming from Visual BASIC 1.0 for DOS all the way up to Visual BASIC 2008, including the conversion from Classic Visual BASIC to Visual BASIC.Net which was hard, but I made it.

I am currently out of work and on disability, and had hoped to create some software applications in open source code for various businesses to use, and offer a professional customized version that is released from open source code and available for private use for a certain fee. I had also considered forming a non-profit like the Mozilla foundation and make open source programs available for free and ask for donations.
