  1. The security guard from hell... on The Most Dangerous Server Rooms · · Score: 4, Funny

I was told this story from a reliable source...

An HP technician (yup they have at least one) was restoring the data to a customer's fileserver but the backup software was asking for tape#2. The customer only ever had one backup tape that they recalled, so they were quite perplexed until the security guard entered the server room...

Apparently every morning around 3am when he made his rounds he found the backup server screen blinking "insert next tape" -- The security guard proudly said that he was pushing in the tape for at least six months now...

In the mid-80's I worked for a company that sold clone IBM's (who didn't in those days?). The owners had contacts in Taiwan who were saying that if we could ship over a motherboard, or anything else for that matter, they could reverse engineer it and have it produced in a few months.

In those day's multi-layer mobo's were not common and ASIC's were rare so it was not too difficult to do. The reason they could cut their costs was the fact that there was no real innovation just R&D (Rip off and Deploy).

  6. Desktop OS? on Financial Institutions Balk at MS Licensing · · Score: 2

Warby is considering shifting his servers to another operating system like Novell or Linux, if Microsoft doesn't change its policy.

Servers are one thing desktops are another matter entirely. I wonder what OS is running on their desktops? In Canada, we have many financial institutions still running on OS/2 (I shit you not!).
Now I know that they won't be running Novell on their desktops and if their apps are Win32 then they better hope that WINE supports their apps if they are going to switch horses to Linux - otherwise it will be a big rewrite and a significant expense. But then again they certainly have the money...
