4.2 is quite stable and very usable. I've been using it in a virtual machine to do video editing with kdenlive. (It was quicker to grab the.iso torrent for Intrepid and share some directories than to upgrade my whole box.)
I understand that with jaunty they're backporting 3.5.[whatever] for us diehards who are afraid of change, but after fiddling around with it 4.2 for a while, I actually became used to it. (Though, I was having problems with some settings "sticking" but am not sure if its a problem with KDE or hte virtual machine.)
My wife, for one. She's an elementary music teacher, and does a lot of prep work at home. Recently one of her coworkers showed her how to use powerpoint for her classes. She came home and asked me if we have powerpoint.
"No," I said. "But we do have pretty much the same thing."
I fired up Impress and asked her if that looked familiar. It did and away she went. She's now able to do prep work at home in the evenings and be in the same building as her family rather than work late.
Unlike the anonymous douche bag below--who's apparently running OO on an IBM XT--for us: OO = total success.
Agreed. I've been running 4.2 on Kubuntu Intrepid in the fishbowl of VirtualBox (needed to do video editing with Kdenlive) and it's almost there. There are some things they've done with the 4.0 series that have me scratching my head--the panel clock f'rinstance: why did they extract all the functionality into four or five differnet clocks when I could choose a setting from a drop down list on the clock applet? Silly things like that. I, too, will wait for the next major release.
I must congratulate the P.R. team behind Icahn. The press keeps calling him "activist investor" when "corporate raider" would be a far more appropriate term...
Maybe that's how things work on Bizarro World, but here on Earth, especially for hourly work, when you fill out an app, you also give your SSN. Don't want to give it? Tough shit, you don't get no interview. HR has better things to do than dick around with people who can't follow direction.
[...]Seriously, though, why does sound support break on recent releases of the kernel? Why did my nvidia driver become completely unusable in 2.6.27? I did have everything working... which took nearly a week. My time is worth money to me and my family.[...]
Seriously, though, if it wasn't broken, why in the world did you fix it? Just because the little icon in the panel says upgrades are available doesn't mean you have to.
The only time I upgrade anymore is when there's something I need/want and can't unless I upgrade. F'rinstance, I'm running on Kubuntu Hardy and want to use kdenlive because I have a bunch of home video I want to edit, and am seriously considering moving to intrepid, but I know that I don't want to yet deal with kde 4.X so I wait...
How fucking jaded are you by the Internet where you'd use the phrase, "Not very interesting porn?" You're just disappointed that there were no animals/dildos/watersports/lesbian nuns/feces/toe licking/[insert your favorite fetish here]. There are some people out there that find titties scandalous (just consider how rich the "Girls Gone Wild" scumbag is).
Besides, everyone knows that hairy lesbian nun watersports is the height of sexy.
The Romans called it panem et circenses. Keep the rabble amused with big screen TVs and superbowls and no one will pay attention to what you're really doing. Do you think all the easy credit stopped at the house market? Who do you think has been buying all those 47" flat panel TVs?
That's the reason my wife hasn't finished her master's degree: yes, she would make more, but schools have to pay more to someone with a master's degree per contract so they're more reluctant to hire the "highly qualified" and will hire someone right out of college (who have a) no idea what they're doing WRT classroom discipline and b) follow the latest fads in education that may not work.)
Now with the crazy budget cuts that are taking place here in MI, she's glad she hasn't acquired her masters because if she gets cut, she'll be a bit more marketable.
So, those of us parents who, when faced with the stressful situation that is a sick child and refuse to subscribe to hocus pocus-mumbo jumbo, we're suddenly horrible people? How about people who point out to us the mumbo jumbo? Are they, then horrible people?
Going back and reading the parent post, I see nothing in there which says they haven't experienced such a thing.
The post incites racial hatred. They would be arrested in any public place for saying such things, if they weren't beaten to death by the black community first.
This has got to be the dumbest fucking thing I've read on slashdot in a while (about 15 minutes...) Who is going to read that post, and think, "Holy cow! I've been wrong all this time, I really do hate black people!" The person and their ilk who cut and pasted that drivel did so to get a rise out of you and your ilk, and it worked, superbly.
This argument always pisses me off. I, as a user should not have to dig around in a registry editor to "fix" my desktop.
I'm busy people, and if I want/need to change a setting, I want to be able to find it quickly, not have to Google what I want to change and dick around with gconf.
Online distribution of hi definition content is the future. We're seeing services like Netflix, and Amazon unbox flirting with the idea, and I'm convinced that this will kill bluray like bluray killed hd-dvd.

They learn faster when you punctuate their lessons with the back of your hand.

Okay, so now you have two different standards on applying options. How is this simpler?
Pfft. Any true parasmut fan knows what parasmut stands for. Now I'm off to stroke my ... ego whilst reading parasmut.

You spelled "douche bag" wrong.

I believe her name was Crackhotep.
I had the same problem with my wife's cat when we moved in together.
I found that swatting him when he did it worked wonders. All chewing was stopped within a month.
Yeah, $9,000,000 is a lot of cash money.

Pooping your pants is distracting no matter the situation.
Don't ask me how I know this...
There can be only one!

Not feces, though; feces is never sexy.

You betcha!

Get a grip, you wiener.
All that aside, I've simply grown tired of tweaking my Desktop.
Then stop. Seriously, dude, just because you can do something, doesn't mean you need to.
I'm busy people, and if I want/need to change a setting, I want to be able to find it quickly, not have to Google what I want to change and dick around with gconf.
Doesn't really matter when your computer's been zombified or your data's been deleted, does it?
