  1. Re:still made for the common denominator? on Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos · · Score: 1

The game supports resolutions that will bring your system to its knees .

In fact my P3 800mhz with a Matrox G400Max is unplayable at 800x600 when the actions starts to get heavy .. like 3fps.

You are not locked into anything .. except perhaps purchasing a new computer.

And yes in the current build you can zoom in and out using the scroll wheel on the mouse.

I have been playing since the beta was shipped .. and 95% of the games follow the exact same pattern.

First part of game .. walk around map killing creeps .. the idea is for your Hero to gain experience .. but you need to back your hero up with troops as well which can become costly ..

and while your doing that the person / team that is going to win the game is simply MASSING troops for a huge rush.

Second part of the game .. MASS troops and rush!!
Even with the Upkeep system in place it still seems that the teams with the most troops wins.

well without sound or VGA, gaming wouldn't exist on the PC as you define it (wintel) - but at that time the PC was playing catch-up .. VGA and sound didn't make an impact PC gaming .. they made it possible.

It wasn't until the 3D accelerator was introduced that PC gaming was taken seriously. Before that we had Nintendo, Genesis .. and even better - the C64!

Commodore 64 had built in sound way before the PC so thats nothing new .. VGA graphics were available on the Amiga before the PC .. nothing new again ..

but 3D acceleration - filtering of textures - taking software rendered Quake @ 320x240 and doubling the resolution and doubling the framerate without upgrading the CPU - now that WAS HUGE

  5. A Sad Day .... on NaN Closes Shop, The End of Blender? · · Score: 3, Informative

Alot of people here bashing blender. Blender is a FREE and POWERFUL 3D app. It may have a very 'different' interface but after using it for a while it becomes second nature. In fact I thought the interface was the best part .. Blender also has a great online community generating massive amounts of step by step tutorials to help the novice get started. Blender gives you the ability to create work that previously would have required a $3000+ investment in software. All this for FREE .. basically available on any platform .. I hope they can get some funding or find some way to keep it alive ....

    ---
Blender supports multiple cameras and lighting, which can be used to create very lifelike images, especially when scenes incorporate realistic surfaces. The program even has a plug-in facility that will accept new surfaces and features created by third parties.

Animation is one of Blender's most impressive features. Not only can objects move along paths, but their attributes can change along the way. For example, lighting effects can increase, decrease, or change color. We were even able to introduce lens flares and motion blurs. Another animation enhancement is particle support, which allows multiple objects to be created and animated based on procedures that can simulate natural laws.

Blender even handles postproduction jobs that utilize images or videos from other sources. For example, Blender can be used to add an animated, walking lamp, complete with its own shadow, to a video using masking and animation features.

The printed documentation is definitely worth the price. It's far more extensive than the free, downloadable version and is packed with useful details. The manual sports many colorful examples, even if the font is so small it practically requires a magnifying glass to read. While the documentation adequately covers the program's numerous keystrokes, menus, and mouse actions, a reference card would be nice.

Whether you need a production-quality 3D system or just some basic 3D scenes for a presentation, Blender fits the bill. If you're prepared to spend some time learning how to use it, the results will be well worth your effort. This is one of the best 3D packages on any platform.

What is the point of saving a species in a test tube? The planet is only getting worse. if we cannot find a way to co-exist with nature NOW I doubt we ever will.

I read in todays paper that a forest area the size of Poland is lost each year .. thats over 10 New York city blocks / second .. burned to the ground. We dump sewage, filth and pesticides into our fresh water .. nature is supposed to survive on this while we wont go near it without chlorinating it / filtering it.

Storing genes in test tubes will not save Endangered Species ... only a strong global commitment to changing our (evil) ways will make a difference ... and then a Modern Day Noah's Ark won't be necessary.
