Who would've guessed... China, the nation tasked with building most of the sophisticated things that are sold in the world, has the ability to build sophisticated military vehicles.
So here are your downloading options... 1) Goto BitTorrent... where new shows pop up right after they air, download speeds are insanely fast, there are no ads, there is no DRM, and I can get video that will play on whatever computer or device I want. 2) Goto NBC... where new shows pop up at 2am, I'm downloading from one source, there are ads, lots of ads, there is DRM, lots of DRM, and I can only play video on a Vista or XP computer.
NBC doesn't seem to realize that a conveniance based model has more opportunities for growth. Time after time the internet has favored those who have figured out how to make a profit by catering to conveniance.
I don't know about you, but if grandmagoldenshowers.com recommends that I download software, I do. If my operating system give me a detailed warning about the software that I downloaded from the porn site, I disregard it. And if I'm forced to authenticate the installation, I do.
Porn sites have given me hours of free orgasms at my desk, why wouldn't I blindly trust them?
Oh and I also always give my credit card and social security number to Ebay when they're having problems with my account and they direct me to www.secureauthenticate.ebay.com.
Since when did Microsoft operating systems become a becon of typographic bliss? As a designer I will admit that those new typefaces are certainly more contemporary. That said, as a developer I can't stand the fact that they come bundled with different linespaceing, tracking, and x-heights.
Typography on the web is f'ing preschool. If Microsoft wanted to do something about it, they should push for something more sophisticated. They tried this a over decade ago with font embeding, but it was never picked up as a w3 standard. IMHO, that's the direction we need to be traveling to. We need an embded typeface standard and browsers that properly support vertical-align, font-size-adjust, tracking, etc.
Please point out where U.S. Copyright Law says I can only make one copy. http://www.copyright.gov/title17 It says I can't make a devise that makes copies of copies and it says that I can't distribute copies. Aside from that, the chapter on sound recordings doesn't contain anything pertaining to "one copy." Hell, it doesn't even contain the word "one."
And that said, who said ringtones need to be an additional digital copy? They could very well be a 30second selection played from a full length song which already exists on your iPhone or iPod.
To further clarify, "malware" will consist of:
media players that support additional audio and video codecs,
anything that lets you install ringtones for free using your own licensed music, anything that lets you make calls on alternative networks.
I'm glad Slashdot decided to post this story. I know we've become accustom to harddrive capacities tripling every 5 years, but like most of us, I was certain harddrive capacities were as large as they could possibly get. Now we can rest assured that hardrives will in fact continue to get bigger over time. Amazing, absolutely amazing.
It's also worth noting that Hotmail doesn't send or receive many of its messages. Microsoft is going that extra mile by making sure that we also don't read our email.
Bah. We're talking about software here. It's not like little gnomes entered the iPhone and physically started destroying the hardware. At the very least Apple should allow people to wipe everything and begin anew.
If MS is guilty of anything, they are guilty of pushing and hyping and Vista too soon. We all knew that Vista wasn't going to be ready for prime time until SP1 or SP2. However, MS was overconfident and they shoved Vista down a lot of throats.
MS should've followed Apple's playbook. Release the OS according to it's already delayed schedule, let early adopter screw with it, but don't force the new OS on people who simply want new hardware.
This is definitely fairly common practice for many big box stores. Although I'm a huge advocate for privacy rights, this guy strikes me as an obnoxious prick. A prick who had nothing better do to then make some $8/hour employee hate his job even more. Did he think he was going to be the Rosa Parks of receipt checking?
It should be noted that large portions of rural America have no connection to a sewage system and are forced to use septic tanks. Rural America is suffering a shitting crisis.
I'm sure Rob Bigelow is a great guy, that said, if my last name was "Bigelow," I'd probably name my company after a planet, a big cat, or something catchy that you only find in a thesaurus.
Come on, this is Slashdot. Half of the people here live off food that was flavor-engineered in a lab and vacu-formed into some sort of food-like eXtreme cheese thing.
Easy to hate: An occupying force has replaced your disbanded your military and technocratic society. Easier to hate: An army of faceless scary-ass future-bots who have replaced your disbanded your military and technocratic society.
If there's anything I've learned from SciFi it's this - Controlling robots is awesome, but being controlled by robots results in pissed off people and counter insurgency. (Not that we haven't already hit that milestone without gun toting robots.)
And as jokingly sarcastic as that may be, I'm somewhat serious. I'm all for keeping out troops out of harm's way, but I'm somewhat curious about the blowback that results from being attacked by T-100's. Ground combat robots seem like something that might serve to dehumanize Americans during a time when we really need to do the complete opposite.
Poor person gets free advertisement based phone. Advertisements inform poor person about products they can't afford. Poor person consumes said products and lowers net worth even more.

"I think she thought a jury from Duluth would be naive."
Way to disprove that by fining a stupid Kazaa user a quarter of a million dollars.

I'm pretty sure I know someone who has Ringles. I think produces a rash on the taint.

Since when is beating Gateway a badge of honor? This is more a sign that Gateway is falling off and not growing like the rest of the industry.

Really? With OnDemand, iTunes, UnBox, Xbox Marketplace, P2P, etc. ?
Snail mailed disks are antiquated you damn old timer. Non-downloadable movies will be a laughable distant memory in 18 years.
No, just spanking.
Creationism / Intelligent Design is NOT a scientific theory, it is an unsupported hypothesis. Theories are supported by empirical scientific research.

I took physics in high school and I still have no idea what you're talking about.
MY EYES! The googles do nothing!
I don't see what's very new about this story.
