"Like no one has ever thought of making a tablet before? There has to be more to this if it is true."

Ya, but this is exactly what people said when Apple made the iPod.
Apple likes to swoop on good ideas that have been poorly implemented in the past. MP3 players, jukebox software, online music stores, video chat, etc etc. None of this stuff was new, but Apple found a way to make it more accessible and desirable.

  3. Nah, Apple's trying to compeate with CD/DVD Combos on iTunes Music Store Sells Videos · · Score: 1

Ehh, I don't know about that. All in all, it looks like Apple is simply trying to compete with physical media. For example, it's fairly common to get a booklet and DVD with a CD these days. Now, the ITMS can deliver that content.

I just bought the new DMB album off the ITMS and I got, more or less, the same content you would get from the local record store. A CD, cover artwork, a PDF of the album's booklet, and the making-of video.

Sure, it's 128kbps AAC and copy protected... but it was only 12 bucks and I purchased it in my underwear at midnight. I can live with that trade off.

    That's a good article.

I don't mean to sound like a fan boy, but the ITMS DRM doesn't really bug me. If Apple wasn't the major player with proprietary DRM, it would be someone else. And that someone else would probably do it with a shittier product and service.

I have some minor gripes about the fidelity of my iPod and 128kbps AAC files, but overall, I'm extremely happy with Apple's service. They got to the top of the heap with good product design. I'm a graduate industrial designer, and it's hard to get through a semester without the iPod & ITMS being referenced as examples of good design.

It could be a LOT worse.

I'd rather waist my energy petitioning Apple to deliver higher bit rate or 5.1 AAC files.

Who the hell runs benchmarks with FireFox and iTunes.

if you ask me, the people that desperately need the ability to multitask are folks in the creative industry. Every 5 minutes bounce back and forth between massive applications rendering huge files.

Nothing sucks more then opening a 400dpi photoshop document and not having InDesign respond since your single core CPU is being bogarted.

SMP is probably the only reason I still find my crusty old Dual 450 g4 useful. It does things slowly, but it doesn't "feel" slow. If something is taking its sweet ass time, I can usually do something else without waiting years for windows and menus to draw.

  14. Re:Thank god for this merger on Adobe Buys Macromedia for $3.4B · · Score: 1

I really don't see the need for multipage documents in Illustrator. If I'm doing multipage work, I need something like Quark or InDesign. Those applications offer significantly more control over page alignment, grids, etc. Moreover, Illustrator integrates fairly nicely into InDesign through linking smart objects.

Furthermore, I'm not too concerned with the "monopoly." There will always be some form of competition, and graphic designers will jump ship if a better product comes along. Heck, the industry's shift away from Quark is a perfect example of this. Quark was the industry standard, but they were slow to update their software and bring compatibility to OS X... so designers ditched Quark for something totally new.

If Adobe abuses their power, MS, Apple, the open source community, or someone else will swoop on their dissatisfied customers.

And hey, Photoshop hasn't had any legitimate competition for years, and it still rocks. Sure there's Painter and Gimp, but they don't really compete for the same customers.

  15. Thank god for this merger on Adobe Buys Macromedia for $3.4B · · Score: 1

I'd rather have one slow load time, as opposed to relaunching an app several times just because the damn thing keeps quitting every 45 minutes.

Geeks may be angered by this merger, but professional designers are going to be very very happy today.

Like every major city, stupid city ordinances get proposed. But the public learns about them, and they are remedied. You can't have 3/4 of a million people living in one place and expect EVERY proposed city ordinance to be pure gold.

"Apple does alright too, but Motorola has a pretty good track record with making stuff people want to buy."

Moto can usually get away with announcing a product a 2 months early... people still buy their current stuff. If Apple did this, they'd loose a lot of money.

"Apple is infamous for announcing a product they know they won't be selling/shipping for months."

As I've said, it depends on the product.

If it is a revision to a current product line, they EOL (end of life) the current product line, wait for inventory to drop, announce the new product and have it in the store within a few days.

If it is a new product, they usually announce it when it is nearly ready and give you the option to pre-order it.

These are generalizatios, but most of Apple's hardware releases follow these guidelines. All in all, the goal is to diminish the inventory of hardware products that will become obsolete.
