  6. Re:Racket! on Arizona School Won't Use Textbooks · · Score: 1

Well, it depends on the University / College or department. Parts of my university have definitely scaled back their use of bound books. I've acquired a lot of my recent reading materials through PDF documents. An instructor / professor / TA scans them in, and uploads them to a class server. No doubt, I'm sure there are some copyright violations taking place, but we're broke. Arnold isn't exactly helping out the CSU system like he claimed he would.

Last semester I only purchased 2 books.... and I'm a graduate student... we read a LOT.

And I would tend to disagree about "fork[ing] up $65." Everyone in my department has a computer or access to a computer. Having a computer at school is like having a paper notebook. You need one. It's part of going to college.

If you can afford one, we have grants/loans available to pay for hardware. We also have very nice computer labs open 7 days a week.

PDFs are quite nice. The biggest problems I see with them are a) scanning books is a bitch... but that's what TA's are for, b) reading something on paper is considerably more comfortable, c) you can't quickly dogear and markup a PDF, and d) you waist a lot of paper making print outs.

  7. Re:How does transparancy improve my productivity? on Windows Longhorn Beta Screenshots · · Score: 4, Insightful

Originally, Steve Jobs tried to justify transparency by claiming you could see if there was anything being obstructed by a window bar, menu, dialog box, etc.

Really, it was little more then "cool for cool's sake." Transparent interface elements have practically been eliminated from OS X. Menu and sheets are at around 98% opacity (almost solid compared to OS X 10.0), and the dock's boarder is transparent, but that's about it.

Transparent interface elements were causing major usability problems. It was hard to grab windows when multiple transparent window bars were layered on top of each other. Moreover, transparent elements were incredibly hard to read when they were drawn over text documents.

I could go on and on, but in short, it was a bad idea then and it's a bad idea now. Microsoft should scrap this garbage on the default theme. I know it looks "cool" and some execs are probably attached to these stupid effect... but people will complain and they will be killed by sp1 anyway. There are other ways to make an interface hip and cool.

I doubt you could even call them "designers."

From the looks of the garbage they spit out, I question whether or not they have a creative director to oversee interactive design, or some people that actually went to design school and studied visual communication.

It looks like there interface designs are pushed by bad HCI buffs.

  13. Ya, people have known this for quite some time. on Our Brains Don't Work Like Computers · · Score: 2, Insightful

Yup, the "and finallys" get a little old after a while.

I hope no one was using this research to acquire a PHD or MS. The "brains are not computers" epiphany has been realized about billion times already. And this research could stand to be much deeper.

I'm a little bummed about the shallow linguistics analysis. It's interesting and all, but I wish they would have really jumped into something such as pattern recognition.

I'm and interactive designer, and I tend to believe that language and interaction is based upon pattern recognition. Our brains receive data, and compare them to flexible patterns in order to make decisions. This study certainly supports that theory.

In this case, if you show a candle and a dog to a user, and tell the user to click on the candle, the user will jump directly the candle since a dog does not fit the pattern of a candle at all...both visually and verbally. However, if you present someone with a picture of a candy stick and a candle, they will hesitate upon selecting the candle since they bare verbal and visual similarities. More processing time is needed to compare intricacies.

People probably slow down and curve their mouse movement since they are still comparing patterns while they are selecting. By curving the track path, users increase tracking distance and cognitive processing time. It also allots them a circular motion which can easily translate into a last minute decision change. When people are unsure of things, they usually prepare themselves for backing out.

    damn I'm a geek :)
