    I kept an old 5.25" 1.2M floppy drive in a system for years... why? It was the last original part, and allowed me to maintain the fiction for my wife that I was just "upgrading" the computer.

    Everything else (case, mobo, etc...) had been replaced.

    "The {Fall,September,Semester} that Never ended" refers to AOL coming onto the Internet. Before, the newbie stuff lasted for maybe a month or so, after the start of the new school year. After that, it never ended.

    Had problems with the UDMA5 mode, the nVidia drivers (yes, I know that one's not MDK's fault), and other minor little annoyances.

    Also, I wasn't happy that I had to do the install four times before I realized that selecting tcpdump in the get updates portion was a big mistake, causing a hang (It wanted libpcap off CD 1, but wouldn't prompt for the CD).

    Microsoft, love it or hate it, understands that you can't expect vendors to support your product and customers to buy it if you regularly break their software with OS upgrades

    You mean like how they silently broke plugin compatibility with IE5.5SP2?

    And the OP is right. The "Grand Tour" is a once in 200 year event. IIRC, there was some debate whether or not they'd get funding to do it (kind of like the P-K Express today).

    At any rate, my observations are as follow: First, the Ada syntax was based on the Pascal syntax (they state this in the textbooks). Second, it is almost as anal as Java. Third, you may write a program in Ada but if you use Gnat to generate your code, it's getting translated to C anyway, so theoretically your bullet proof code just developed some vulnerabilities.

    1. What do you mean *ALMOST* as anal? It's more anal.

    2. You won't be using GNAT in an avionics systems. You'd be using a Validated platform. That means that the compiler, OS, *AND* target platform have been validated together. It costs a bundle.

    3. DoD has removed the mandate that ALL new software be written in Ada, but most avionics are written that way for safety reasons (editorial: Ada83 sucked, but Ada95 is a fairly decent language).

    They're pretty much free to accept whatever code they want, as long as it's written in Ada.


    Disclaimer IWADC (I was a defense contractor).

    A reboot in flight would be considered a "Priority 1" problem. Systems generally do not pass qual testing with any 1's or 2's.
