This guy has a point. Back when I worked for a defense contractor, we were bidding on a standardized Intel based computer system. It had a laundry list of requirements... (OS, WP, Spreadsheet, Comm program, etc...)
We wanted to bid it with MS Word 5.0 (this was back in the late '80s). The requirements for the Word Processing component read "Must have a 'Reveal Codes' function". That was a specific line item to indicate "You must bid WordPerfect".
Government agencies tend to do this sort of thing.
Here's a question - who do I sue if that bug in Konqueror causes me to lose money? Nobody!
Here's another question. Who do you sue if that bug in IE causes you to lose money? Nobody! Read the EULA!

The reason you can't do things like useful debugging of optimized programs isn't because GCC can't produce the debug info necessary. It can, and would (IE patches exist that make it do so, and would be accepted without any trouble), but GDB can't handle the information.
<HUMOR> Darn that Microsoft! You can't even debug Linux code properly without needing an IE patch! </HUMOR>
B) they'll finally tackle somebody with enough deep pockets and pissed off attitude to crush a company like this, and set a major legal precident.
This may have happened. BT sued Prodigy over their insane hyperlink patent. Unfortunately for BT, Prodigy is owned by SBC, one of the (three?) remaining Baby Bells. I suspect that SBC will bitchslap BT in court (can you say Engelbart video?).
All we need is for somebody to bitchslap this idiot. He claims he has the best tools, and he didn't even know about the Perl module that predated him???
No, the concept wasn't that. A woman who did it for profit was a whore. A woman who did it for pleasure was a slut.
DISCLAIMER FOR THE POLITICALLY CORRECT: The terms "whore" and "slut" are relevant to the time period referred to original posting. I am in no way, shape, or form, referring to anyone on Slashdot (or anyone they know) as a slut or a whore. Well, maybe a karma whore, but that's a different thing.
I did something similar. My grandmother had a diamond "Eternity" ring with a bunch of really small (2-3 point) diamonds in it. My wife (well, she was my fiancee back then) and I had a ring made which incorporated those diamonds, and also a central stone. This was many years ago before any PC-ness came about regarding diamonds.
If necessary, I guess we could go with Leonard Maltin or even (gasp!) Barbra Streisand!

Wrong. The original Space Elevator idea was by Yuri Artusanov (sp)? Clarke gave him credit, and the paper you referenced also has Artusanov in the references. He invented the concept around 1960.
You know what's going to happen... some genius in the state Assembly or state Senate will get the idea that all cars sold in CA should have transponders for traffic reporting purposes...
Of course, this will be put somewhere that the driver can't easily get to it...
Rendezvous was the official interthreading/synchronization mechanism. Ada tasks are independent threads of execution within a single process. Please explain how that is different from "threads".
Yes, I have used Ada83. The semantics and synchronization are radically different from Java, and from the threading model we've come to adopt, but that doesn't mean that they weren't threads.
MOD PARENT UP!
fight the lameness filter!
A chance to have all of my medical history, flight history, biometrics, and banking info all in one place?

Couldn't they get Karel the Robot to do this?
OK, he would have to do something with his beepers, and he is physically challenged (what with his inability to turn left), but still!

Shit. I cut&pasted the wrong link.
Here's the correct one link.
Sorry, it's been done.
Of course, it's an Australian patent, so maybe you could get the US rights to it.
I intented the internet!! Pants, too! Give me money NOW
No, Al Gore invented the internet.
Yes, I know that's not really what he said but it's become a canard.

There goes Borland's "No-Nonsense" "Like a book" license agreement!
And, yes, AFAICT, they did restore it for C++Builder 5.
oh, and taking over Hollywood
No, that's a Good Thing(tm).

No, because then they'd go running to Congress saying, "See the Evil Content Pirates(tm) are eating into our profits!"

Why would they do that? Why not use that enormous gravitational potential energy, and convert it to a storable form on the way down?
Sure, it's not 100% efficient, but you still have some energy that you can use for the next upward trip.
I missed the end of that one. How did it end?

He's a geek. Now if it had been Emeril, that would have been another story...
Come on, though... We really want an interview with either Kaga or the Iron Chefs Morimoto and Sakai!
I don't think stockholders would care much for MS's games if it came to that.
But you need a PassPort to play MS's games!
So, does that explain the ever changing warp scale in Star Trek?
While I do not profess to completely comprehend slack, I have been assured by members of the Church that I do have it.
Praise Bob!
