I switched from Virgin Mobile to Ting because of the better device selection, multiple phones/lines per account, and the ability to roam to the Verizon network if needed (not very often).
I've been a Ting customer since March (right after they came out of their beta period) and I would recommend them as long as you have good Sprint coverage in your area and can afford paying for your phone(s) up front. They've had some growing pains (mostly related to their device selection) but are a very straightforward company in regards to billing, support, etc. If you check out their blog and support forums, you can see responses from the company regarding their pricing philosophy (only pay for your usage, no free minute/rollover/unlimited gimmicks), pro-phone hacking (threads regarding rooting phones they offer), future device lineup, LTE rollout plans, iPhone plans, etc.
My monthly bill comes out to about $30 (after taxes) for 2 HTC smartphones using 100MB of data, 1,000 text messages and 500 minutes.
Feel free to use my referral link to get $25 off a device.:)

Although CSS still fails to support variables and simple math, there are some CSS frameworks available that can be used with most web development platforms to offer that and additional functionality (like mixins) for the developer.
Take a look at:
Why would I be disappointed in my dual 2.4ghz Xeon workstation? There aren't many other choices for dual processor machines that don't cost an arm and a leg to build.
This machine totally destroys our dual P3 server or my single Athlon XP at home... Very happy with it.
Hehe - Yah, installing the thing on Linux couldn't be easier...
From the review:
Installing the mouse and keyboard couldn't be easier... I did have to edit several lines in my/etc/X11/XF86Config file so the Gyromouse would work with my 300MHz PII laptop, however. Specifically, I added an InputDevice section for the USB mouse.
I'm guessing it did badly because the C# code used the Framework's StreamWriter/StreamReader (the correct way) while the VB code used the Microsoft.VisualBasic.* crap for I/O calls.
Another reason to not shop at buy.com is because they no longer do any type of support over the phone _unless_ you pay them $10 per call. Have a problem with some urgent order you placed? Get that credit card ready for a "support fee" or e-mail them... 3-4 day wait for an e-mail reply.:(
I was going to link to the part of the site with their new support policy but it seems to have been removed/hidden... can't even find a phone number on their site!
They used to be such a great store too - I could order things at 4PM and they would arrive the next morning using the normal ground (cheap) shipping. Oh well - more business for NewEgg and MWave...
When I worked for a dotcom company and we were going through some layoffs I had to write a script that basically did someone's job who had been let go (of course, their duties fell on me... and I had no time to manually do them.) It took 3-4 days to write/debug/polish and the result was 10x better than when the actual person was doing the job by hand.
It later became a joke when we were talking about new projects that would "help" people do their jobs (instead of them manually doing something, the computer would do most of it), causing their job to become redundant and they wouldn't be needed anymore.;)
Odd advice but I actually did this once for a phone interview. I interview terribly over the phone. I decided that if I was going to have any chance at this I had to be relaxed... and what made people relaxed? Tequila! Since I was on the phone they wouldn't be able to tell I was slightly intoxicated.
I had an interview set for something like 2pm. I took like 5 shots of tequila at about 1:30 on an empty stomach. The call came in and I was slightly to moderately drunk.
It actually worked. The alcohol loosened me up enough to sound relaxed and coherent on the phone and I was able to get a face-to-face interview with them.:)
When I was out looking for a job some of the applications I was required to fill out seemed like written tests. Even though I had a full resume with all of my information I had to keep a backup sheet on hand with dates, addresses, past bosses, phone numbers, etc of the last few years. Keep in mind that I already had an interview setup and they had my resume... it's not like I came through the front door and asked if they had any openings.
Most likely they just wanted to check and see if I could write clearly and remember the rules to writing simple things like their, there and they're.
I've purchased a bunch of Dell machines in the last year and they are rock solid hardware wise. The problem comes when you want to upgrade (say, a server) or have a service type issue. Their phone centers (customer care, technical support, and sales) will all pass you off to the next department to make you go away and not solve your problem.
Also, those next day service contracts normally mean the next day after the replacement part arrives to their techie... not counting if that part happens to be out of stock or back ordered.:( So you could have a dead server or workstation and "next day" is actually 5-6 business days from now in the contract.
I've been fighting with them since 10/3 trying to resolve an upgrade problem with my server and I finally got through to a VP a few days ago who can actually do something instead of telling me to contact their legal department (by snail mail only!)
Since I used to live by the beach, let me tell you that the best aloha type shirts are made by Reyn Spooner. Not cheap, normally over $50 per shirt but probably the best in the world.
"Most of the people I have been around with are not out to cheat anybody," said Mr. Sankus, a large, shy man who worked as a computer technician at a Gateway store. "They are out to have fun. It's just a hobby."
Leader of an international warez group... works as a gateway tech. Priceless:)
I've used cable modem services for at least 3 years including mediaone, at&t, time warner and hopefully pretty soon charter. I've always recommended it to friends and family over DSL because you get a much higher download rate (200-300KB/s) compared to the normal consumer dsl (75-100KB/s).
In general you paid the same for DSL vs Cable but got more with the cable service. Well, that's changing now. Cable companies have noticed that they are basically giving away a T1 worth of bandwidth for $50/month. They see how the phone company can offer high-end business DSL for $250/month and want to cash in... so they are copying the DSL's price scheme.
Charter Communications is my current cable provider. Their plans are something like this:
256Kb Down / 64Kb Up - $30 768Kb Down / 128Kb Up - $40 1Mb Down / 256Kb Up - $60 1.5Mb Down / 384Kb up - $100
These are very similar to verizon/at&t/etc DSL packages. I figure most of the other cable providers will switch to a similar plan soon. They save bandwidth, make more money and the only people to really complain are the 1% who are causing all the bandwidth problems in the first place. That 1% doesn't have any alternative except for DSL, which has the same pricing plans... and we know they won't go back to dial-up.
In one of the like 100 things they are sueing for they state that the code for the bnetd server had to of been stolen from the offcial battle.net server because a unique bug exists.
(scanning the pdf)... Here it is:
17. Blizzard's username/password authentication softare was distributed to users in product releases containg a bug, i.e., a programming error. With the bug, the username/password authentication software was still able to perform the function for which it was designed, but the implementation of the bug causes the software to produce a distinctive and unusual result, and is easily identified.
Apparently this bug showed up on the bnetd server... Of course, without actually identifying the bug it's hard to say if they are right...
You didn't specify an operating system, price or hardware concerns... If this is something you are researching I would suggest buying a top of the line Apple w/ Photoshop 7 on it. Apples are #1 for multimedia and graphics manipulation.
I've had no problems opening 2400x4000 tiff images in photoshop on my P4 w/ 256MB of ram PC so I would assume a picture 4x bigger wouldn't be a problem. Remember I'm using a PC which is slower at photoshop loading. (The images resolution can also change things... 300 is a lot higher than 72)
I'm suprised you tried GIMP before photoshop. This isn't a 100x100px gif of a dancing penguin you're trying to view:)
Over the last couple of years I've worked in a few different work spaces. My last employer initially had a large room with 4-5 desks within 4-5 feet of each other. Originally we started off with 3 people at the 5 desks and everything was great. Being able to just roll (in your chair) right over the other person's desk to answer a question or provide some input was awesome. As time grew on all 5 desks became filled and we started having problems with things like some people listening to music or burning insense(sp) candles which would upset everyone else... So we went to cubes.
Maybe it was the cubes we had (ugly blue fuzzy fabric, over 6 feet tall) but everyone became depressed. It was a lot harder to talk to each other and we all felt kind of seperated. I don't think work really suffered but nobody liked them.
Near the end of that company (it was a dotcom), 3 of the other people in the cubes were let go and with only 2 people and 5 desks we took down the cubes and had an open area again. I personally liked having 2-3 desks I could work at (one for my development, one for mac development, then a multimedia machine i could queue to run something and sit back and let it do its thing)...
When that company died I started work at a new company sharing a small office. I was really a guest, seeing that it was the company's owner's office and a private office was being built for me upstairs. Although annoying at times (people would come in to shred papers, ask questions, lots of phone calls) it was very productive and I was somewhat happy. I was looking forward to my own personal office though...
I moved into my office over a month ago. The privacy is great and I can turn off the lights (like all programmers want to do) without bothering anyone. The strange thing is, I feel sort of seperated and de-motivated to work. I notice myself spending a lot more time surfing slashdot when I know there's no way anyone will see me not actively working.:p
My suggestion would be to have small offices big enough for 2 people and to pair you developers up in them. Face them opposite of each other so they can't look at the other person's screen for privacy reasons.
I switched from Virgin Mobile to Ting because of the better device selection, multiple phones/lines per account, and the ability to roam to the Verizon network if needed (not very often).
Ting can roam to Verizon for voice/text only, no data.

What's with only allowing registered users access to the print version? I pretty much gave up on being able to read the article after seeing that.

I prefer to have my tivo record the superbowl and then I'll just skip past the football part and watch the commercials. :o
I thought getting used to the bad taste was the whole point of drinking beer? I have yet to taste a beer that didn't taste like piss...
