Oh I can't WAIT until we're using the "Congressionally approved cryptographically secure open platform document transport protocol." The RFC for that will be bigger than my phone book...
Quick! Somebody tell my ISP that we're no longer using IPv4!!
f'ing schill. go away.
HTTP won't be replaced any time soon. If HTTP is broken it's not because the protocol is lacking, it's because no one (NO ONE!!) implements browsers correctly.
Well, the post mentioned above (heretofore referred to as the Post Of Doom) received over 700 moderations. Many MANY people moderated that post up and it still languishes at -1 (or mabye 0). Point is, LOTS of people wanted that post to be seen, lots of people thought that the post was worthy and a high quality post (by their own definition). They wanted to read it. Slashdot did not want them to. So it was bitchslapped into -1, where most folk fear to tread. How is this not cencorship? Because it wasn't deleted? It may as well have been.
This is hardly elitest or stupid or damaing to Open Source - this is reality.
Then it is an unfortunate one. One that will keep linux off of the desktop.
My anger stems from the fact that the grand parent of my original post stated that 'we need better support for hardware' a truism. He was flamed by jonathan_ingram who said (paraphrasing here) "your printer is terrible, buy a new printer, no one cares about your stupid HP printer, not linux, not me, not open source." (Okay, so that was a fairly liberal paraphrasing, but you get my point). The subtext of his statement (which I more or less fleshed out) IS elitist, stupid, and damaging.
This is of course a selfish and wrong way of looking at linux.
My statement may have been selfish, but it is was not wrong. For the user with the HP printer, Linux does indeed suck. My argument was not that "an operating system that does not support all hardware sucks," it was that the community that supports linux can be an arrogant one, and that the post I was replying to was not helping anyone and in fact, reflected poorly on the perceived attitudes of the Linux userbase. If Linux is unable to live up to the expectations of the average user (such as something simple like PRINTING) then to that user, Linux Sucks. Linux is unable to live up to the expectations of the user with the HP printer, therefore Linux Sucks (for that user). Windows works. It's a bitter pill.
Great, Epson printers are supported. But my HP printer is not. I could give a damn about Epson.
We need some real support for some real printers.
This statement is true, since the only real printers to me, are the ones that I own. HP, not Epson.
So, real printers are supported. Terrible printers aren't.
Calling HP Printers terrible is plain stupid, elitist, and damaging to the progress of Open Source. People like you are the reason that Linux advocates are seen as belligerant pompous assholes. The claim that the print support in Linux sucks is true until HP printers are supported. I don't care if the HP print language is obfuscated assembler. I care that Linux can't print.
In essence an Escrow scam is exactly what this person pulled. By getting such a high postive feedback rating he earned the trust of his buyers. What is Escrow? It's you trusting another party with your money. I'm guessing that the chances of an Escrow company waiting for one big score are just as good as some well respected ebay auctioneer. The best part about the 'official' escrow scam is that the scammer gets the money and the merchandise. Don't think it can happen? Neither did the poor schmucks who wanted rodent statuettes.
By the way, I normally don't take time out to actually post. But since my moderation and meta moderation privs were removed since i moderated a post I found intresting.. to be intresting. (The great slashdot troll investigation). About 500 people lost their moderation ability at that time. What a nice brave new world.
huh? link?
I must be living in a hole... Since when does moderating an unpopular post get your moderation rights/privs revoked? Which begs the question, is moderation a right or a privelage?
I appreciate the mod and all;) but I'm really fishing for an answer to the question... 7.2 is fairly well tested and fixes numerous flaws in 7.1... What gives here?
Of course you realise, this is the Microsoft philosophy applied to the legal field. Microsoft has had a history of buying up tecnologies and expertise, many of which have simply disappeared, never to see the light of day again.
But, can the Queen of England wage war without parliamentary approval? I'd have to say that the Pres is a bit more than a figurehead. In the case of this congress, and with regard to corporate America in general, a puppet maybe, but a figurehead, certainly not.
I have a solution to this. Print postage and an address to a DVD recycling center on the disk and ask the consumer to throw it in their mailbox when they're done.

When online music sharing began I was buying $200-$300 in CDs every two weeks ...
*blink*
Have you ever thought of adopting a son?
I'm just kidding... unless you take me seriously...
Damn you for pointing that out! ;) Yes, I misread. How damned embarassing.
just like IPv4 was

Cyrix still makes chips? I thought they died a long time ago!

Is call forwarding not available in your area?

Couple Ebay's lack of insurance with Paypal's track record for pursuing claims and this is what you get.
Uh... RTF! Any OS Any word processor... It's been around for a while. MS != Dead.
What alternatives? Link? Mind, the same convenience with the same price, sans the same hassles is what I'm after here.
You never know... They COULD double post it twice... It IS slashdot afterall...

Konsole in gnome works great. Never had a problem with it.
What, do you wipe your ass with $100 bills or something?
Heavans no! The paper cuts just aren't worth the cool factor...
I appreciate the mod and all ;) but I'm really fishing for an answer to the question... 7.2 is fairly well tested and fixes numerous flaws in 7.1... What gives here?
But... RH 7.1 is a poor distro... Why not 7.2?
No wonder their software sucks... It's all written by lawyers!
Of course you realise, this is the Microsoft philosophy applied to the legal field. Microsoft has had a history of buying up tecnologies and expertise, many of which have simply disappeared, never to see the light of day again.
Does this mean no more lawyers? GO MICROSOFT!!
"Microsoft's campaign contributions significantly surpassed those of Enron," said Roeder in his report."
On a similar bent, I would like to point out that Microsofts charitble contributions surpassed those of THE REST OF THE ENTIRE FREAKING WORLD...
that is all.

I agree with everything else you've said.
I have a solution to this. Print postage and an address to a DVD recycling center on the disk and ask the consumer to throw it in their mailbox when they're done.
If this were true, they would eliminate drop boxes too.
