Maybe if you guys can't get around to entering, you can do some kind of BattleBot type competition. Fight it out like in a big football stadium. Be a really cool half-time event:^)
You're very right, this can be used for much "bad".
That's why I'm here pushing the idea of using it for good. Nobody's stopping anyone from developing this kind of technology for useful non-threatening/harming uses.
It's not a sword, it's not a plowshare, it's just a thing that you can use for different purposes.
Here are some stats from the International Campaign to Ban Landmines website at http:///www.icbl.org and the Clear Landmines website at http://www.clearlandmines.com...
Over 35,000 amputees in Camboida alone from landmine injuries
An estimated 200 million landmines have been manufactured in the last 25 years.
Each year, 26,000 people are killed or mutilated by landmines of which 8,000 are children.
Roughly 3 people every hour, 71 per day are injured or killed by landmines
The US Military DOES put effort into this kind of thing for landmine detection. It's not just a "killing" technology. Check out http://www.aro.army.mil/arowash/rt/sbir/00PHIII/00 page3.htm for example. Cool "geek friendly" vehicle which can save lives. There are others too. Go to google and search for sbir landmine detection. SBIR grants are a type of grant the US goverment (all branches, not just military) give out every year to small businesses to develop stuff.
One of the huge applications of autonomous vehicles is the removal of landmines. Systems that can scout out, identify, mark, and even remove mines could save the death and maiming of thousands every year.
Our poor earth is littered with millions of land mines left over from past conflicts, and from current ones too.
Don't knock technology like this. It can be used for good too. Even to clean up after the bad.
Same thing that happens to a zillion commercial boats.
And give the designers some credit for having the system realize when GPS is degraded (it's easy to tell) and have it not try and be so "smart" when it is degraded.
Our "reporters" have concrete proof! CmdrTaco and the other/. gang are really ALIEN SPIES sent to confuse us with off posts once in a while. And the rumors that Cowboy Neal is actually Elvis? We're checking up on that.
Meanwhile be sure and check out our latest Page 3 darling!
You make a telling comment when you say "it's easy to forget they're there". What this translates into is many Linux boxes that remain unpatched because people forget they are there.
That's the real statistic we need to answer the question. What percentage of Linux boxes are unpatched and out of date?
You got my vote librarian person. I too sorta coughed on my coffee when I read that intro.
How are you ever going to simulate the sense of excitement and curiosity one gets going into a library? Wandering the shelves looking at books, finding that serendipitous find? Or simulate a thousand other things I'm sure I and other library fans could mention
quote: Is this doll a step in that direction? I sure hope not!
No. It's just doing what a lot of parents would probably would want anyone who had the ability to "communicate" with their child to do. Got nothing to do with being a prude, or whether the fact the parents swear or not. Generally you just don't bring up small children with that kind of habit.
Besides, it's a pretty funny hack. I can just imagine coding a swear filter into that:^)
I suppose next we'll have motorcycle riders in no-helmet law states (or their next of kin) sueing when they die in an accident without a helmet.
Or people who get STDs sueing when they catch something and didn't practice safe sex.
Look - both of these happened because people in positions of responsibility failed. They failed to adequately secure their network, they failed to patch, they failed to properly choose the appropriate OS for the task at hand. There's a long chain of fault here, and it's hardly Microsoft's fault that users are stupid. Nor is it their job to "unstupidify" the users.
Hmm a system that tracks who's posts are of value and who's are not. I would suggest a scheme where they mark people's post as "Interesting", "Informative", and other such words. Maybe some way to mark them as "Funny" and even "Flame bait" or "Troll" if they are just obnoxious posters trying to get a fight going.
CS is not IT. IT is not CS. There's crossover, but there'a big difference.
If you get a PhD in CS/CE and spend your time doing IT type tasks, you'll be bored. You'll be doing "mundane" tasks instead of higher level research and development.
To prove that MP3 players are potential terrorist devices and thus call for their ban "in the interest of national security"
I'm joking btw...
Uh...
Weight TIMES Distance, not just Weight.
WTF?

The parent isn't an insightful post, it's just a case of bad logic.
Nobody has a B17 let alone bombs they can use on it. Even if you did, it would take a while to get to Berlin (assuming you lived in the US).
But guns are very commmon in the US. As are cars.

And beat them with hickory switches too! BRING BACK REAL PUNISHMENT!
Tell me about it...

If it's that good, Activision (or someone) will buy it. Look at Counter-Strike, Day of Defeat, etc.
I bet it was at that point where you said, "It was my twin brother, really!" when the guy decided to take a swing at you :^)
What next?

Only if it's soundproof.
I've got a pinball machine in my office (Triple Action by Williams). It's fun, but it's loud. Just make sure nobody's gonna get annoyed by the sounds.
Day of Defeat has all hand done animation. It is published by Activision and is from Valve .
I also believe Counter Strike has all hand done animations as well.

Nobody figured how to blame Microsoft yet? Come on you "M$" people - get cracking!

Oh! Oh!
Someone rate this guy up! He's the little voice that provides the kneejerk reaction we all have missed in this article!

Oh wait!
