  1. google still finds whitehouse.gov (and org) on White House Website Limits Iraq-Related Crawling · · Score: 1
Seems like the Whitehouse would be more interested in having their views on the matter come up higher in the search engines than other views. That is - NOT be blocked from searches.

Right now if you google for "iraq" and "whitehouse", http://www.whitehouse.gov/infocus/iraq/ is the top link. Second link is also on whitehouse.gov Amusingly, http://www.whitehouse.org (an anti-bush site) comes up second in the list of sites. If whitehouse.gov manages to push itself out of the robots lists, then guess which site people will see most often?

  2. A couple of other things to check... on Not Offering A Demo Better For Indie Games? · · Score: 1

Try and do this with a $50 game. People will want to try it first and see what it's like before they fork out the money. Now try it with a $5 game.

Also, how many people that bought the game from the demo page actually tried out the demo? That is, how good was your "pitch" of the demo? Did people try it?

  3. They've also done this with audio in cars on 'Black Box' Readings Help Convict Montreal Driver · · Score: 1

GM ran audio recordings in cars too, and via dealerships were able to get the data for use in research.

Actually the results were pretty interesting. Your average driver usually says something like, 'oh god', 'shit', etc. right before a crash.

Except in extremely rural parts of the country, in which the last thing recorded was often, "WATCH THIS!"

A lot of us techno weenies don't know jack about how to deal with some of the other realities of a company you know. There's a reason why in modern society you don't fix your own car, build your own house, grow your own food, etc. And there's a reason why in a modern company everyone doesn't know everything about each task, speciality, or knowledge collection that collectively defines a type of worker, a work group, division, etc.

  11. This is why there could be a delay on Half-Life 2 Delayed Following Code Leak · · Score: 4, Insightful

It's not because the game leaked, but because the underlying systems that ensure that players can't easily cheat, warez the game, or access the personal information of other players.

Part of what was compromised was probably the code that handles CD key authentication, user online authentication, etc. So clearly warez and such for this game could be hugely rampant.

Part of what was compromized was probably the code that handles Valve's anti cheat system. So clearly the cheats that override that system could be hugely rampant.

Part of what was compromized was probably the code that is the game's engine. So clearly there could be cheat authors easily creating wall hacks, aim bots, and any number of other cheats.

Part of what was compromized was probably the code that handles purchasing the game over Steam. So clearly there could be some risk of credit card and online commerce fraud, personal information leaks, etc.

Look at it this way. The blueprints and plans for the bank got stolen. Thieves are studying them now. The bank is going over the blueprints with a fine toothed comb to fix the obvious (and not so obvious) weaknesses which are more clear when you have the plans.

Probably rewriting the CD key authentication, the server authentication system, and a number of hooks so it's not so easy for cheaters to break into things.
