  1. a descent gaming OS.

    Oh, sorry, I meant decent.

  2. This has nothing to to with Linux/Unix or command line. It's because Mac OS works only (well) on Apple hardware. FreeBSD based Orbis OS which is used in PS4 is actually a descent gaming OS.

  3. Apple is really having the most childish bugs in the last few years?

    With "commercially supported" I don't mean that Qt is necessarily closed source or they should go for the proprietary version of Qt. I mean that Qt developers are paid for their hard work to improve their product. Compared to it, GTK 3 (and GNOME 3) is a hobbyist project with no goals even though it's an unofficial RH product.

    Linux Mint Cinnamon is a nice piece of software but unfortunately it's based on a rotten foundation which is getting worse and worse. They should should migrate to the commercially supported Qt. But I understand that it would be a huge work.

    Linux won in the mobile space. Linux runs on over 2 Billion monthly active devices.

    Just because the the Linux kernel is used in Android doesn't mean that it's the Linux kernel's merit. It's like to say that 2 Billion cars using a particular engine means that the engine is successful while the original car, the engine is taken from, is lousy. Android is very much different from GNU/Linux, the Linux kernel is buried so deep that most of the developers don't know about it, and it can be replaced with something like this.

    The generated binaries' performances are comparable in some cases clang is faster, in some cases gcc. Also gcc's optimizer is notorious for bugs and undefined behaviors. Just try this in optimized mode with any gcc version and compare it with other compilers:

    #include <iostream>
    int main()
    {
    for (int i = 0; i < 100; ++i)
    std::cout << 30000000 * i << std::endl;

  19. How can you possibly know this, if you don't have access to the proprietary source? Just by using the program. Source code isn't necessary for discovering bugs.

  20. More eyeballs don't make bugs shallow, it's an old myth. Many OSS programs have in order of magnitude more bugs than the proprietary counterparts. BSDs may have less people but those people are much more professional and organized than most of the Linux developers. BSD kernel's and core libraries' implementation is consistent, tested and well thought whereas Linux is a mess resulted from itch scratching, changing for the sake of change, reinventing wheels etc. Sure, Linux gets new features faster but when they arrive in BSDs, they'll be rock solid. Companies such as Netflix who want very reliable servers use BSD. Even Google wants to abandon Linux kernel and replace it with Zircon.

  23. No, the vast majority of software is proprietary. Proprietary software isn't going anywhere soon, so are copyrights and software patents. Developing a good product isn't cheap or fun and if there is no way to monetize it, then sorry, it's a suicide. One of the best examples of such failures is desktop Linux. Open source software has always existed even before any Richard Stallmans and nothing has radically changed.
