I work in IT for a PD, and we have body worn cameras that are locked into an upload, with no way for the officer to delete what's on the camera. That was one of the main reasons for purchasing said camera.
The real solution? Reimage the production server to just get it working, then you dig around on the dev server until you find out what's actually going on.
Exactly.
If the machine is in production it needs to be working. You don't have time to dig around and find the root cause. You need it to work. Now. If you've got a virtualized environment it is trivial to bring up a new VM, throw an image at it, and migrate the data.
Then you take your old, malfunctioning VM into a development environment and dig for the root cause, so that you don't see the same problem crop up on your new production machine.
I ditto this. Its really hard to troubleshoot a problem when users are ringing your phone continuously because a critical server is down. Much easier to pull it into dev and troubleshoot at your leisure. The key being going back to figure out the problem. Not just "forgetting" about it and moving on.
Yeah, but when your company still has critical programs that will only run on 2003 or earlier, you don't have a choice. Sometimes you still need that floppy. We keep a USB floppy and a stack of disks in the server room for just these times! Perfect example: NetMotion. Critical program, but will not run on 2008. Doesn't fit well into the VM environment due to multiple NICs and the need for a big ol SQL database.
I work in law enforcement IT, and we routinely dispose of drives that have sensitive data on them. This is our technique. We strip the magnets and keep them on the workbench to hold screws when we take things apart, then smash the platters with an 8lb sledge hammer. If you can recover the data after a sledge hit, you're smart enough to go about obtaining this data another way!
I have a Latitude D430 for work with a 32GB SSD, and while it isn't noticeably faster than the guy next to me that has a standard HDD in the same machine, my battery life is WAY better. I'm getting 10+ hours with the extended battery out of the thing. And, I'm not as scared about losing data due to a dropped laptop. (Networking = frequently dropped laptops!)
A Point of Sale terminal has to work with finger input. Having to use a stylus would create too many problems. How would you like to wait in line at McDonalds while the cashier crawls under the cabinet looking for the dropped stylus!
I'm in Myrtle Beach, and MaqiQuest is one of our favorite things to do, if you feel like fighting your way through throngs of little kids during the summer. You have no idea how busy this place is. the desire to squeeze as much money as possible out of the place interferes with the experience. I hear a lot of people leaving unhapppy because it was just too busy there to really have fun.
You could tell me that I only had an 80% chance of survival, and I'd still strap that bad boy on and ride it into space! Any kind of space vehicle is going to have some kind of risk. Its hundreds of thousands of pounds of fuel hurtling through the air. When is that ever going to be safe?
With great achievements, come great risks. It was true for the early explorers of this planet, its true for space too.
One of the good things about XP is if you have two physical drives, you can span the swap file across the two. This works no matter what the size of the drives are. Put them on seprate IDE channels, and you'll be amazed at the difference. Granted, there is no substitute for RAM, but if you have a spare hard drive floating around, try it. It'll blow your mind at the performance difference.

That smart, and holding 3 degrees, I'm sure this guy has plenty of bucks. If you've got money, you can have a hot girlfriend. Looks and money are on a linked scale. Good looks + no money = Laid. Ugly + $$$ = Laid. Net effect is still the same.
If you're life is that important, rent a movie and stay home. Why should I be inconvenienced by your need to take calls? I go to movies because, for two hours, I don't have to deal with real life and become immersed in another time or place. I don't like it when somebody interrupts this for me.
I'm sitting here reading this article, and the darn mouse batteries died, sending me on a mad scramble for some unused piece of electronics that hasn't already been pilfered to feed the hungry mouse gods. God, what I wouldn't do for a mouse who's batteries never died. (Re-chargable ain't gonna cut it).
It seems like a good idea at first, but then you have to reason it out. I have a 1972 Dodge Dart - my first car. It is only equipped with lap belts. It came from the factory that way. I get pulled over at least every tenth time I drive it. They can't pull for just seat belts in my state, so they always come up with some kind of lame excuse for pulling you over, I.E. you were "swerving" from lane to lane, etc. Now, I'm not against the police in any respect, as my dad has been a cop for over 30 years and I have grown up in a cop household and these have been the people I have known since I was a child. But there has to be a point where you have to tell "big brother" to take a hike and let you have some privacy. I like the fact that my father is on my side in this respect. He refuses to pull people over for seat belts and other minor infractions that should be left up to the driver. Hooray for decent police officers who respect people's privacy!
You know, after seeing 6+ years of uptime, it reminds me of an old article about a server at UNC that was running, responding to pings, but nobody knew where it physically was. Turns out that during a remodeling of a building, this particular server happened to get closed in between two walls. It took the IT staff of the school and some guys from Cisco to find this server. It was up for like 4+ years. I can't remember what OS it was running, but no matter what, that's impressive!

Hell, I hate to admit it, but I like Bud. And I also like Black and Tans. I used to drink Amstel, but for the past couple of years, you can't seem to get a good bottle. My favorite bottled beer is Red Stripe. I also like the local microbreweries. What does this mean? ABSOLUTLY NOTHING! Different people like different things at different times. Bud is for daytime drinking on the weekends (boat or beach), micros for happy hour, and different beers for the house. Why is somebody "not cool" for drinking one of the most popular beers on the market? Are you really that "1337"? Get over yourself.
The difference is in the weight and the price. Priced a moped lately? They aren't that cheap for what you're getting. Plus, retrofitting it to current bikes lowers the price to obtain this even more.
I just bought a Seiko 5 that is accurate to +1 sec a day, and I love it. $50 on Amazon. It's a special feeling to wear a mechanical watch.
Happened 2 years ago in my city. Regular traffic stop, guy just steps out with an AR15 and unloads on the cop car.
The situation changed when thugs started getting out of cars and unloading on the cops with fully auto assault rifles. Different times.

Also, as a side note, we invite people to our "smashing day". It seems to be pretty therapeutic for people to smash computer equipment!

What's an equiv. in windows to hdparm? No Linux on this box.
I'm in networking. Hence, I routinely stand in front of a rack holding a laptop. This means I am bound to drop it at sometime in its life.

I tried to get a first post, but the pressure was too much and I passed out before I could hit "post"

Is it possible to mod this to +10 insightful?

I once had my office on a sales floor with about 20 women. You think a jet engine is annoying, try that out for size!
