Mod me off topic, but this seems to be exactly what people gripe about microsoft and apple (to a lesser extent) for. Everything comes w. the system. If you want a garuntee that it will work, you can't use third party tools.
Besides, as far as KDE has come, it isn't even close. You can't copy and paste between EVERY application. Fonts look like CRAP. Everything has to be rasterized to be displayed (including eps files).
I don't think KDE is to blame for this either. I think the largest part of the problem is the X-Window system.
While I understand this, and I agree that abusing monopoly power is wrong, It really irratates me that the other companies can do the exact same thing only because they are not a monopoly. There is a difference between abusing monopoly power and bunleing extra features. I think people in general have forgotten that.
Everyone does this. Your kidding yourself if you think otherwise. 2 examples, KDE, and OS-X. Apple is utilizing OS-X to force safari on people wheather they want it or not. The same is said for quicktime. KDE does the same thing with Konquer. Please, stop with the utilizes monopoly crap, its really sad.
I'm very pleased with it. I get ALL my purchased music from it.
Maybe you should take a look at
this. Everyone knew it wasn't going to last, but I'm shocked at how quickly the music industry has changed their minds on on-line pricing.
I wonder how many youngsters seeing the series starting at episode one will hear the title "A New Hope" for episode four and wonder if the new hope spoken of is for the story lines? Its kind of ironic...
Let me clarify for you. It this case, the phrase Unix Geek does not meen a willing enlistment in the Vi/Emacs war. It means someone who recognizes the potential of the availible tools for the platform, and whishes to harness that potential.
I love apache. I love php. I love mysql and postgres. The list goes on and on. I could care less what distro or whatever I run these tools on because in the end, it really doesn't matter. Microsoft has made great strides w/ windows xp over previous releases, but it is too little to late for me to stay with them. I also don't like the direction the secure computing platform is going in (my opinion).
However, I am also a fan of productivity. Certain tasks require a command line input and some scripting ability. Other tasks require a decent gui. Currently, only Aqua is filling this role (my opinion)
I am also lazy. I do NOT want to track packages installed by myself. Package managers were created for people like myself. I will only install from source if the benifits outway the ease of using the package.
In this sense I consider myself a Unix Geek (debate as you will). When the opurtunity arises for me, I will be making the switch to OS X, as I suspect many others are or will be doing in the near future.
I could go the other way and say that I would rather click to change focus.
In all honesty though, why hasn't any UI had a check box under the mouse settings which says "Click here to have focus follow mouse." This way, we wouldn't be having these debates. Both uses have their pros and cons...
I see this argument many times, and I personally agree with you.
However, I recall the interview's with lucas w/ regards to the THX edition that was released (the last un-altered [apart from the sound] edition). He clearly stated that ILM was in the process of enhancing Star Wars so as to represent his vision of the story. He is straight forward and says that despite all the advancements he had made, he wasn't happy yet.
Basically, the only official editions you will find released will be an even more "enhanced" edition than the special edition.
If you really want the original trilogy on dvd, I suggest you try looking for infamous laser disc rip.
Its not a broken VM architecture. Intel chose to go with out a split cache for the x86 becuase of speed. The logic is less complicated and they could ramp up the speed of the processeors quicker.
I know, silly intel for believeing that programers could check their own bounds. It is however, a necessary thing when you have single cache. Now that the instruction and data caches are going to be seperate, its not as crucial.
Nothing is allowed to be executed from the data cache, so if you overflow a buffer, and throw code into the data cache, no big deal.
Thats the idea. It sets a flag and says, hey... this code isn't in the instruction cache, you shouldn't execute it. It is up to the OS in most cases to go "wow, thanks for catching that..." and close the application without delay.
We will still be at the hands of microsoft to correctly implement this final task. I'm sure BSD and Linux will implement this stage just fine, but i'm not at all confident that MS will do what basically amounts to an instruction check (all in all, not much different from a bounds check) correctly.
Touchscreen is the only way to go. These are police officers, they don't have time to lean how to use whatever system you want to hack together. They want a picture menu on the screen that they can touch to get at what ever information they need.
Developers should never be conerned with what makes things easier for themselves, but what makes things easier for thier users.
No No No... Brush up on your newspeak. It becomes Double Plus Bad. Critical can be used in place of bad, so it is not needed. All further instances can be established by the use of only approved adjactives. Therefore, if it gets fixed before six months, it is double plus bad.
I'm confused. Microsoft bought concentrix virtual pc. They have the ability to emulate the x86 platform on a power pc. If this new xbox has 3 ppcs in it, why would it be so hard to emulate the xbox 1?
The general population is becomeing dumb. As a whole, they would much rather touch a location on a screen which shows who they want to vote for rather than trying to either write his name down, fill in a check box, or use a punch machine.

Oh Oh Oh....

We get the last laugh, because the evil emprire will die!

What, they can't make a new one composing of what they feel are the best features in each?
As usual...
did you RTFA?
Do you know where you are?

Your new to american politics, aren't you?

At least we (suposadly) report all of our crime. Unlike other cities.

Maybe Tivo is acquiring technology to put them in a place to compete w/ Moxi. Well, that is if the thing is ever released anywhere...
You know this is 2004, not 1804 right?
I guess my main question is why not use remote adminstration. IE. ssh, terminal servies, PCAnywhere... those types of things.
