    There are flight control/traffic control projects in open source..

    Anybody who has caught transport to LA and flew out did so on open source traffic control all the way from the train transport to flying out..

    the software runs on Linux currently....

    There awas even an article in several linux magazines..

    and Didn't also several other teleco phone hackers breakin over the past ten years , so much so that every defcon conf in Lasvegas always has teleco cops, fbi, cai, and treausury officials in attendance?

    Fro example the ban on nazism in Germany forced everything underground in which the German police have to expend more hours than otherwise to keep track and monitor theri actions..if they weren't banned everyone woudl know what they are doing due to the fact that they woudl be out in the open in public view..

    There is stil no company policy to avoid writing code that produces buffer overflows..the toolkits to help avoid this have been out in every major computing language for over 2 years..

    Poor unit testing

    It seems that MS was pursuing many different strategies with xbox..

    1. Home Entertainment

    but they forgot something that most game developing companies know..

    The dev culture that produces a high quality game comes from a highly effiicent small management team that stays out of game devlopers way..

    MS is not known for this..

    Notice when Bungie was bought, MS gave the reason that they needed xbox develoeprs for the purchase, that once Bungie was neck deep in the mS management mire that Halo took some extra years to ship!

    Hello All,

    One important point to point out..

    It does not matter whether MS wins or loses this course cse in the final effort to win Developers to windows and the .NET platform..

    The biggest Battle MS has to win here is the Public and PR stuff with developers..

    Why?

    Because the largest target market for the next 5 years in both mobile devices and enterprise systesm..not home PC desktops!

    So it becomes very important for MS to win over developrs using this Court case..so that is why it fashions the objections the way it does..

    However they forgot to factor in the high intelligence of independent devlopers..Whoops I guess Bill Gates was wrong when he said only the elite programmers work for MS!

    MS has already lost the war in wining over developrs its just a matter of itme bfore they admit defat..Hoever I don't think they will do it in this court case..will be another 7 years though before this is untangled..

    oh and dont forget changing the MS Office apis and file strucutre every year to thwart MS Office competitors...:)

    Ah and on the subject of security..

    Apache and any UNix has the btter security record by a full 200%

    Gee thats why you commercial peopl buy Websphere from IBM to avoid using open source modules that run right, right?

    Side Note: WebSphere runs right becasue its base is Apache! IBM's own code base before this sucked!

    winNT coudl not pass the test due to its weird unsecure DLL version behavior (ie all dlld versions have same name and file path)

    So governemtn decided to change the test to allow winNT to pass..

    Joel is good exampel of Why MS's current Security Initiative will FAIL!

    This is interesting simply because of the rack space 1u PowerPC units that are starting to appear..

    Couple this with one of the PowerPC chip patent holder moving break neck speed towards Linux and RedHat(IBM) and you have a real good chance that you will see PowerPC servers from IBM released next year running Redhat linux..

    I think I may have foudn the answer in part of your post..

    If this is correct there are going to be alot of small companies competing in several key new technology areas acrross the web in the next 2 years..

    Should be very exciting!
