It is _not_ a recommended practice to re-encode MP3s to Ogg. And if you do, please don't distribute them, because then you're giving the public a skewed representation of Ogg Vorbis' real audio quality.
The bitrate reduction in Ogg Vorbis is called peeling, although, no real tool for peeling currently exists, and no one has really proven it works (only a small sample program that didn't sound that great)
I remember, between the nights of partying, strolling around one of the squares in New Orleans, and there's this street performer who played wine glasses he had setup on a table. I just stood there and enjoyed it for a while, such a pure sound. I'm sure others who have been there can give more details as I believe the guy is still there and has been for years.
Yes, quoting one of the more sensible/. readers: This "vulnerability" only effects poorly-written applications, running with system priviledges, which create windows in user-space.
You're not supposed to do that.
If you want to have a service which is user-configurable, create two separate programs (one service & one gui) and communicate via a named pipe.
This isn't a flaw in the win32 API. This is a flaw in some applications which run under windows.
Well for surveying, you can place one receiver at a known point, and then have it tell the other receiver it's error and then relative to the first point I think they can get down to centimeters IIRC.
First off, c'mon RI is so small anyways, just let them have a little more land. You know that little chunk that Massachusetts has along the top of CT, I think CT is still pissed off about that and taking it out on RI.
The other amusing thing is this quote: "It bothers me giving up my low-number license plate with my initials on it." It's kind of a hobby, maybe even an obsession, of some people in RI to try and get a low number (or as they say in RI "low numba") license plate, for example if you had w-12, you would be all the envy in the state. License plates are typically two letters and three numbers in RI.
The encoders are the biggest factors. There are still people encoding with Blade or old Xing encoders. Yuck, really bad. Lame is the only way to go. Yes, I'm very familiar with MAD and it's a great project, hopefully Rob will make a great fixed point Ogg Vorbis decoder too, now that the spec. is published.
Based upon this, I fear Ogg Vorbis will only be used by geeks.
Many people are listeners not rippers. Geeks are the most efficient rippers and propagators of music. Many people don't care what format to which they are listening, as long as it plays in their favorite player. I send files to my friends in Ogg Vorbis format. The first time I sent them, I attached the Winamp plugin. Now, you don't even have to do that, it's included. One of my friends said that he hates when he finishes listening to one of the songs I sent to him and then the next song is an mp3, he realizes how bad a lot of his mp3's sound.
Now not having a portable Ogg Vorbis player is a whole different story...
Bastille Linux is user space hardening (e.g. changing file permissions, disabling telnet and other vulnerable services, setting up IPTables and various other security features), no kernel patches as far as I remember.
I second that, the great part about the PHP manual is that there are user comments at the bottom of most of the manual pages, so there are usually examples and a couple of things to look out for posted in the comments. Very helpful...

Well here's the answer to you problem: Check out the OggDS project, their filters work fine.
Well for music, WMA 64kbs vs. Ogg 64kbs, I definetly believed WMA beat ogg vorbis RC3, but not anymore. Ogg Vorbis 1.0 at 64kbs (quality setting 0) is amazing. Beats WMA hands down. In a some cases Ogg Vorbis 64kbs beats the poorer MP3 encoders at 128kbs.

Umm...no, check CVS...module vorbis/docs, there's tons or specs in there for you. I think Monty finished them up last night. So before you jump down their throat, get your facts straight. Monty and the other guys have done a lot of work the past few weeks. Why not say thank you instead of spouting off about things you don't even have all the information on. BTW, Ogg Vorbis 1.0 sounds amazing. Better than an other CODEC out there. WMA is in the dust now.
Alton Brown rocks. I made the turkey for Thanksgiving which he showed how to cook on his show. People were saying it was the best turkey they had had in a while. Believe me, that wasn't due to my own culinary abilites, but thanks to Alton's directions. Good Eats is the most underated show on Food Network, corny, yes, but I love it. Ironcially I went looking for this book yesterday at the bookstore, they didn't have it, I'll have to pick it up online....
I love perforce too. And if you are either an open source developer or you just want to use it for personal use (two users max) you can use if for free. Check out their licensing here (scroll down for open source info) and here
Plus it's so easy to install on a linux server. There's a bit of a learning curve with how the system works but in less than a day you'll be checking in and out and branching without a problem.
And what about independent ideas? How long until we see a SourceForge ad based on the next big movie, what will it be Men in Black II or the Power Puff Girls...How about some original advertising...

3 this is definite windows bashing
4 if you really understand what is going on here, its not a big deal.

Well I thought that was implied when I was talking about surveying, but yeah obviously, the $300 receiver is not going to do this.

I don't think its getting slashdotted, this story is a dud. Check out the S/N ratio 5 of 65 comments when viewing at +1...

My first thought was, where are the answers. My second thought was, thank god I have a job.

You just need to get yourself one of these.
