Enterprise does have some dumb moments, but I don't see how it could possibly have lived up to the expectations. It's an awesome show. Sci-fi today is mostly crap. I mean.. some of us were even dumbed down enough by today's mindless crap to think the Matrix was cool.

But, I like the whole Star Trek universe.. and anything remotely similiar is copying it and anything too different is alien to me. It took me a long-ass time (though mostly fun) to 'get to know' the Star Trek universe and understand things better. The more you understand, the more you seem to know why things are handled the way they are. Enterprise seems to be judged too often by people that saw maybe 1 episode of TNG and 2 of DS9 and decided that they were infinitely better.

It also really annoys me that Cox Communications won't include UPN in their lineup. I have to download episodes or watch them the next day in the afternoon on CBS. Perhaps Enterprise is actually more successful than UPN thinks. I mean, Enterprise is downloaded a hell of a lot more than Friends and Everybody Loves Raymond. When I finally turned 18 and headed off to college, I was flooded with credit card offers. I took to reading the fine print to pick the very best ones. There were offers that advertised 'NO ANNUAL FEES' and in the fine print, it would say something to the effect of 'by stating no annual fees we make no promise of the future.' On two of the cards I used to have, I was slapped with random $20 charges - one was called an annual fee and the other was called an 'account maintenence fee'. I called it in and they took them off.

Also, I had cellphone service with Sprint for a week. They promised me 14 days to try the service and get my money back if I didn't like it. Well, I found a better deal with Tmobile (fuck me up the ass) and decided to cancel Sprint. To make a long story short, there were about $260 in random fees from 'disconnection fee', 'early termination fee', etc. I had to spend nearly 3 hours on the phone insisting that each one be removed per their contract that states 14 days free to try out the service. I bet most people that do that end up paying the lower fees just to avoid the $200 early termination fee.

Now.. Tmobile.. that's really a company I would like to sue. They've managed to fuck up my bill every other month (call in and they fix it after an hour of arguing). I get dropped calls more than 1/2 the time. I seldom get a decent signal (in a STRONG signal location advertised by Tmobile). They charged my brother for nights used when his contract was supposed to be for nights and weekends. Since he didn't pay it, it was sent to collections. Tmobile is horrible.. they don't negotiate; they treat their customers like terrorists. Anyone else want to 'class action' against Tmobile? I'm sick of their random fees and lack of usable service.

Sorry about my rambling.. I hate Tmobile so much. I can't wait to walk off with my number at the end of the contract to a better carrier.

I go to UF. The dorm room connections were never that great. Three years ago, with only Napster on the network, it was damn slow. UF is blaming these file sharers for a slow network when they really oughta be checking their bandwidth availability. I live off campus and use a cable modem - it's about 3x as fast as the UF network.

If UF spent some money to upgrade the bandwidth, then the file sharing wouldn't matter. It's a sad thing to see my college give up on the liberties of the students and surrender to an invisible threat of liability - something Universities were traditionally immune from...

BTW, the entire premise of the Internet is being fucked right now. Corporations will run the net completely. If they had their way, the Internet would have limited download and zero upload. There is no reason to sell uber download with shitty upload unless you're trying to limit the participation of the end user. Perhaps now UF will limit upload speeds of the students too. Hell, we might as well pay a portion of our taxes directly to the RIAA/MPAA and all the other corporations forcing the Internet under their tight control.

So, since your entire school couldn't cope with 2 T1 lines, Kazaa should be banned? How about limit everyone on your gimped network to text file sharing? Eliminate everything but text and maybe you could get your entire school under a 56kbps line. You blame file sharers when your school was too cheap to pay for some real bandwidth.

Then, they would charge the radio stations, webcasters, and other providers a royalty for playing their crap. Then, they would charge everyone subscriptions to download crippled music that can only be played four times. Then, they would enact a new law that does not allow anyone without their permission record any form of music. Then, they would make books illegal. Then, they would gouge out our eyes so that we could only listen to their music as entertainment.

As far as I'm concerned, I pay a royalty when I buy blank music cds - so anything I put on them is already paid for. They can't charge me twice for their music. So what if I decide to put all 74min of good music that came out in the past 3 years on one cd? I paid the royalty for it.

I just wish there were more piracy rings like that one and I wish music piracy was more rampant. Phase out the big media companies and start requiring talent to build you up.

I could care less about the big pockets of a corporation that puts 'Enact new laws.' as part of their strategy. I love capitalism. This, however, is not capitalism; it is extortion of every person that has ever decided to like a band.

Contrary to the common claims, linux for me has been just as unstable as Windows.

I have a computer at my parents' house - my dad now uses it which runs Redhat 7.2 just perfect.

But, I've been trying to get Mandrake 9.0 or Redhat 7.3 to work on my laptop - and they do. But, the ACPI is not implemented so my laptop eventually overheats and shuts off. The newest ACPI patches do not seem to work for me either. (If anyone has experience with ACPI on a Toshiba 3000-S304, send me an email or something if you'd like to help)

Also, linux has no general GUI. Yea, you staunch linux supporters will say the common lingo such as:

    "Never trust a GUI."
"GUI's are for those that don't know computers."
"GUI's are whatever you want them to be."

But, that defeats the purpose. The nice thing about Windows is that (once I get it running stable) I can use any program - no matter how complicated - since it uses a standard GUI. I opened up Photoshop for the first time years ago and figured out how to edit a picture in about 15 minutes. Every new program I open in Windows... click, click, click and I know it generally.

In linux, you have to learn every little command. It is just plain not intuitive. Like, who would guess netconf or urpmi or chmod or any of the other random linux commands?

Also, linux NEVER seems to work right 'out of the box'. It took me forever to get Ogle working - seems I had to rename a few devices.

Also, my Mandrake installation somehow corrupted itself on my laptop. I made absolutely no changes other than using Kate for java programming and now it won't complete the boot process.

Yea, I have had terrible times with windows also - but at least windows is intuitive. The linux programmers need to get off their damn high horses and realize that an intuitive GUI is how you get real people to adopt it.

Another problem is the years of experience people have with Windows. No matter how much faster linux is, people generally know how to do things faster on Windows. All I can say is linux needs to be easier to use. Screw security when I can't figure out how to get a battery icon on my taskbar. (One that actually communicates with my laptop.)

Until linux works EASIER, it will be on my secondary computer as a secondary boot option. Right now, pirated XP is the most convenient option for me. (I own two licenses - but the pirated version allows me not to have to call the Fuxors at Microsoft.)

Yea, if you think I'm pissed at linux, I am. Every time I go for help on it, I get the typical "RTFM, man {command}, or run {insert random combination of characters}" like I shoul've known it automatically.

Linux people - make a damn common interface. Why the hell does every program have to look completely different?

Installing linux is usually easy enough, but configuring it to have a standardized look and feel is nearly impossible. Getting familiar with linux requires learning commands that are NOT intuitive - such as chmod, urpmi, etc. It also requires countless hours of reading man pages or tutorials which often do not adequately explain what the user is trying to do.

Also, each program, whether graphical or command line, has its own unique interface that doesn't closely resemble its peers.

Linux (as in most users) seem to pride themselves in Linux' counter-intuitive interface where one cannot merely learn it by exploring (pun). I believe linux contributors need to realize the importance of a good UI and the importance of learning by intuition.
