You couldn't be more right. I had the horrible experience of working with Jeremy Porter, ICANN member, and he exquisitely enjoyed wielding power. I saw him use profanity on an internal mailing list when cussing out someone who had made a rather common error. When someone pointed out that wasn't the way we were used to being treated by our coworkers (our company had just acquired his), he retorted that the cussee in question was not his coworker, but his employee, and he would do whatever he liked with an employee. Shocked me, at the time, to see an attitude like that in a happy-go-lucky internet company.
Needless to say, Jeremy Porter is a big-time BSD fan (no joke).
You do know that, before 1994, the Democrats had a majority in both houses for 40 consecutive years. That's right, with the exception of the Senate for 2 years during Reagan, the Democrats had both houses going back to the time of Eisenhower. And we all know how things got progressively better after Ike left office.
The guy is an enemy combatant, imprisoning him is perfectly legal. There is a saying to the effect of in time of war, the Constitution is silent. The Constitution isn't a suicide pact, etc.
Don't worry at all about Mr. al-Mujahir, he's received AQ training on resisting interrogation, and will come out quite well. And with some help from the usual organizations, he should be back in Pakistan planning another attack in a year or two.
Minus points for quoting the Deadly Toxin as an authoritative source...several of my buddies used to work there, and I can tell you they are certainly not a shining beacon of journalistic practice. They're the slashdot of Austin media.
An AMEX is not a credit card, but rather a "travel and entertainment" card. You can not carry a balance, all accounts are due in 30 days.
I heard an anecdote once about a gentleman who had an AMEX "Black Pearl" card. Supposedly it was good for a million dollars, anywhere, anytime. The guy stopped using it because clerks always thought it was a fake, and it was easier for him to work with his own banker if he needed a million on short notice.
The customers themselves turned over illegally modified cable boxes to the company when the boxes stopped working.
Call me crazy, but I don't think turning your illegally modified cable descrambler in to the cable company for repair after it stops working due to the cable company deactivating it is a good idea.
I've always wanted to see the EZPass data...you know if you pass through one toll booth, and another one down the road a few minutes later, and the distance between the two points is known, your exact speed can be calculated. =)
I've always wondered what the speed record was for going from I-10 to I-45 on the Hardy Toll Road =)

The money in my pocket can't have a system failure and lose my data.
Of course, the ATM that I get my money out of can.
The only down side is that, cause it works so well and is so transparent, you don't really keep track of how much money is left on the card and you find yourself adding more money to the card too frequently.
Casinos require their patrons to change cash into chips for much the same reason. Four green chips on the table just don't make the same impression that a $100 bill does. It's easier to play with the colorful markers and not realize you're losing real money. The line at the cashier to change chips back into cash is also another way to part you and your money.
Slot clubs work much the same way. Anyone who plays a lot of slots hates dealing with the mass of coins that a big win produces. Only amateurs are impressed with the shower of coins like that produced by machines in the movies. "Real" casinos (read: casinos for people who live close by and play a LOT) don't use cash at all, just a "Dave & Buster's" type card that inserts to the machine and the central computer notes your ID and keeps track of your wins (ha!) and losses.
Yeah, it's delightful to see two corrupt titans in ICANN and South Africa take on one another. ICANN was quick to whip out its preferred weapon of "but if we don't have control, we will shut you down." South Africa just wants to sieze property so it can engage in graft.
Yeah, I suppose they just do a first-come first-serve at the best movies? I've been to the SXSW festival and you clear the way when the elites come through.
I didn't complain about mainstream movies. You must have mistaken me for the ENTIRE SLASHDOT POPULATION.
You won't have a chance to see it right away...you won't have a chance to see it AT ALL. It's a supercool little indie film, and it only plays at supercool little film festival theaters, the likes of which you and I will not be invited to.
In, shall we say, less-developed countries, there is very low internet penetration. But the people who do have computers also have printers, and internet "news" from such stellar paragons of reliability as azzam.com and kavkaz.org is printed out and widely distributed. However, due to the internet's high-tech reputation as a worldwide communications net, simple peasants and villagers, as well as educated people who should know better, ascribe a credibility to internet news stories that Westerners would find to be astounding. After all, the internet runs on computers - how could such amazing machines tell lies all by themselves? Plus, the Islamic media would never lie, lying is against the teachings of the Koran. You should see the fantastic stories that are taken as Allah's honest truth, such as the hundreds of American special forces being held prisoner by the Taliban, and the AQ fighting unit formed by aforesaid prisoners who converted to Islam.
I can't emphasize this enough - for these people, this is what is happening. There was a warning telephoned to all the Jews who worked in the WTC not to come to work that day.
America is conspiring with India against Pakistan in order to open another front against Islam. In truth, the Islamists have been trying to start the first Indo-Pak war of this century frantically (parliament attack, kashmir provocations) so they can depose the Musharraf regime and sieze Pakstan's nuclear weapons for their own use. And use them they will...a nuclear deterrent only works if the other guy wants to live. We're losing the information war, badly.
A similar situation existed during operation Allied Force in Serbia. Serbian citizens believe to this day that they shot down dozens of Allied aircraft, including a B-2 and several F-117s, as well as capturing a damaged stealth fighter intact (it was immediately shipped to Russia for examination, of course, which is why it's not on display at the same Serbian military museum where the fragments of Capt. O'Grady's F-16 are).
We can't watch this movie? It's only played twice? Then why the heck is it being reviewed??? So some elitist Ebert wannabe can brag about how cool he is, that he got in when others were turned away? What's the point of this review? Might as well review a 9.5mm silent movie from the 20s.
Very true. Makes one wonder how many times Western news organizations have used the same jedi mind trick on people who questioned the veracity of their stories.
No, I'd like to buy the notes so I can fold them, spindle them, mutilate them, shred them, crucify them, expose them to radiation, write swastikas and inverted pentagraphs all over them, and feed them to a doberman so I can collect the resulting shit, coat it with superglue, and throw it in Bob Justman's face for coming up with the idea of WESLEY.

Just saying.
Don't worry at all about Mr. al-Mujahir, he's received AQ training on resisting interrogation, and will come out quite well. And with some help from the usual organizations, he should be back in Pakistan planning another attack in a year or two.

So, does slashdot.org comply with the standards stated in the article? If not, why?

Where's the fun in that?
The article was about cablemodem internet access, not cable TV.
The customers themselves turned over illegally modified cable boxes to the company when the boxes stopped working.

For bonus points, diagram the above sentence.

That doesn't follow at all! What happens when I register southafricasucks.co.za, or mbekigoatse.cx.co.za, or what have you.

Hey, that's fine with me. South Africa can use one namespace, and the internet can use another. That way, everyone's happy!

You do, however, need an invitation to get into the best flicks at the indie festivals, such as the one being reviewed here.
