I'm reminded of the story Henry David Thoreau told to explain his quitting his father's pencil company.
"I made the Perfect Pencil. There was no reason to continue"
Honestly, the process is always better than the result. When are you happier, Having sex, or just having had sex? Plus, fire is way cool. Sailing's nice and all, thrilling and whatnot. But given a choice between torching a huge sailboat and using it, I'd take the Beavis Way.
It does sorta require having been at least a teenager when the strip was in circulation. Since it's been pretty much a decade since Bloom County was in production, it's quite possible that your friends never read it because the drawing style didn't appeal to thier pre-pubecent artistic sensibilities.
Milo, to a pregnant lady: "Lady, do you love that baby inside your stomach?"
The worm's memory-resident, moron. You have to reboot to get rid of it.
No shit, Coward. It was a joke. Maybe the smiley face should have tipped you off.
I'd be more interested in seeing the infamous Red v. Blue map for last years US Presidential "Election" overlayed with this one. It would certainly help to illustrate that the bulk of those Red states don't seem to have electricity;)
In Bowling Green, OH (Exit 181 on I-75, 60 miles due south of Detroit) the local University (appropriately named Bowling Green State University) has a yearly auction where you can buy pooter stuph by the pallet. Picked me up a half dozen macquariums-to-be for under 20 bucks. Forget when it is, sometime in the Spring.
They weren't the cause, just a wonderful symbol. It's like cocain was to the mid-eighties. Didn't directly impact very much, but was symbolic of the recklessness and greed that was so pervasive among the "in" crowd at the time.
It is my fantasy to have one of these bad boys, as the article points out. And they are still too much even at auction. The only place I've worked in the last three years that had any quantity of them was Nortel. I don't think they'd had any for longer than a year before collapsing. Perhaps they are a bad omen...
A human can very easilly come up with new ideas that has not yet been thought of
You presume that all of Chess has not already been thought of. The possibilties are not infinite. Sooner rather than later, the computer will be unbeatable @ Chess.
I have Interix installed on my workstation, but I've built the posix tools into our standard NT image and put them on all the servers as well, pretty much just so I can 'ls':)
Heh. Roughly half of our Dell Latitudes are running Red Hat. We even have a standard image.
Of course, we make sure they understand that we'll let 'em do it, even help them if we can, but that we are NOT gonna go out of our way to fix shit when it breaks.
Honestly, that's what Firewalls are for. If you are really worried about managing them, simply don't support it. But to ban it is short-sighted. Think about it. How do you explain that you are not going to let people use the tools they feel the most comfortable using?
Of course, our CIO is an old Unix Admin, so we have enlightened management:)
Amen, Brother. I started with a Tecra 780 that was great (built like a tank) and now have a Portege' 7020 w/ DVD docking station. Sleek, sexy, and plenty powerfull enouigh for Win2k or Gnome/KDE
Winmodems are the bane of every non-MS OS using laptop owner. Not a day goes by that I don't count my blessings. Health, Family, and a Cable modem...:)
I appreciate your looking on the bright side. However, the fact that most people don't change hardware very often (if at all) is not relevant.
Why does MS care about what hardware I use? Why do they need to know that i bought a new HD and video card? Why Do I need to get their permission to move my copy of XP from my desktop to my laptop? Or from an old PC to a new one? Why do I need to enter a serial #, anyway? Apple doesn't make me. Neither did Be. Or Red Hat.
What pisses me off about the new registration model is that it requires me to give MS information they don't need, and that I don't want to give. It restricts my freedom to use my software (that I paid for) in any way that I want to.
And that's why I won't buy it. It's why my company (I'm the Admin) won't use it. A few hundred fewer upgrades won't kill them, but it sure will make me feel better.
If you truley resent that this is "vaporous" then why give in? I'm sure you get a lot of crap submitted, most of repeatedly. Why did you cave in this instance? So you could make a 'witty' observation about how it really wasn't news, let alone something that mattered?
Honestly, if you felt strongly about it, don't post it. Have some balls, for cryin' out loud. You're just as bad as the Karma Whores. Anything for attention.
Please do explain then why even more people used Win95.
Seriously, many subscribers don't have a real choice. Of the people I know that use DirecTV, they do so because they either can't get cable where they live, or get AOL/TW cable. They could always just not watch TV, I guess, but I think that's a a seditous act.

Pregnant Lady: "Of course I do!"
Milo: "Then why did you eat him?"
Anyway, There was a quote from an SGI rep in the referenced article. He basically said "What's new. IBM's been knocking on that door for years".
I've had good luck with Horadric Staffs. I've taken a liking to using a Gemmed Crystal Sword in combination with a spiked shield, too.

[flamebait]Honestly, if you want to build an AI that gets along with people and fits in, playing Chess isn't exactly the route to take.[/flamebait]

It's more like boxing, where even the loser takes home a nice Bucket O' Money.
Star Wars Episode II: A Darkened Heart.
Would be a good title given the primary story line in this edition (Anakin->Vader), and would be a good-natured poke at El Presidente.
