It would be nice if there was some consistency in the way it is done. Here in Ottawa ON/Gatineau QC, we dial 7 digits from one province to another, even though they are in different area codes. The parent talks about Philadephia and 10 digit dialling within its metro area. In Toronto, I think it is 10 to call to and from 905 to 416 and I think it's the same for Montreal and its 450/514 codes. Why the extra digit?
... but I don't have Windows 98 at home. I really don't. I have Slackware, and Mandrake on various PCs, but no Windows 98. My laptop runs Windows 2000 or Slackware depending on what classes I'm doing in college during any particular semester. I don't use KDE, but I am anxious for Slack 8.2 or 9.0 (whatever it will be called) to be released so I can use GNOME 2. I guess I could compile it myself, but I am too busy and Patrick et al do it so well. That doesn't mean I don't like games, that's what a boyfriend's computer is for.
I apologise for using the term 'nerdy' inappropriately. I would have responded to you more directly, but the only complete sentence you used was you'll be tarred and gzipped and perhaps feathered too for using a term such as that 'round these parts. The rest was unintelligible. I guess the inability to communicate is what makes one 'nerdy'.
It would seem that solicitor-client privilege is maintained were these communications end up on a prosecuting attorney's . I know in Canada that it is. I could research this if taken to task. A google search revealed this site that described the status of solicitor-client privilege in various countries. (OLD-2000)

As much as I support laws like this, I don't really think the problem with mobile phones themselves, but rather with people not being patient enough to be sure it's safe before picking them up.
After 3 crackups in just over 5 years, resulting in two cars written off, an anti-cell phone law would be most welcome where I live and work Ontario/Quebec.
All 3 of my accidents were caused by mobile phone users not paying attention. In 1997, I got rear ended at a red-light. In 2000, I was hit by a snow plow backing up into my path (it was snowy, my car just slid). The asshole only got off the phone when the cop showed up. The last one was similar to the second, but I wasted six months dealing with the courts and my insurance company as the other driver had a history of carelessness with her car and telly-o-phone and attempted perjuring herself. I agree it's bad luck on my part, but all accidents would have been easily prevented.

I've always wondered what the motivation was for people to call themselves capitalists. There really aren't that many capitalists in the world. Who actually makes a living from moving their money (capital) around? As wealthy as some Slashdot readers are are, I doubt that that many of are capitalists. Mr Gates, the Fords, Duponts, Reichmanns, Aspers are capitalists. Workers who earn more than the average worker are still workers.
They could have at least used an Australian contact number and cited american law rather than Australian law. It would seem that the ISPs should put as much effort into complying as Mediaforce did in writing these letters, none.
If you really want to print PDFs for free, print your file to postscript, then go to www.ps2pdf.com. You upload your postscript file and a few seconds later, you get a PDF back.
There is an easy solution to that. Simply multiply the fuel consumption by the base tax rate. If a Hyundai Accent gets 5L/100km, multiply 5 by the kilometre rate and the Ford Explorer which gets maybe 15L/100km would be the base tax rate times 15. Not only does the state of Oregon get its tax grab, but it also encourages economy.
I had a look at the site too. It looks just too amateur to be real. I think the biggest tipoff that it is a scam is that for a British website, all of the words that vary between American and British (rest of the world) English invariably take the American form. Were I British, that would set off alarm bells right there.
It's so sad that scammers are everywhere
We don't want to be the 51st state, we would rather be the 51st to the 63rd states or no deal.

Why does the common secretary need a full-powered PC on her desk anyway?
Speaking as a "common secretary", I would probably say that if anyone in the office should have the powerful computer, it would be the secretaries. In my office, a law office, the lawyers use Outlook, Word, QL, IE and their billing tool. They have varying levels of savviness on the computer, but if they want anything else done (like install their Palm), or if they are confused by anything (like when clients send us documents in non-Microsoft blessed file formats) they call me.
I went out and bought extra applications, like Acrobat to "secure" documents for emailing out. I maintain a couple of Access databases for our library, if the thin clients will allow for different environments, while maintaining licence issues, I'm all for it. As long as our offices are beholden to Microsoft "solutions", I see this as being a non-starter.
Well, as far as I can tell, the junk mail probably is not that convenient, and if he doesn't like it, it is not very difficult to put it in the recycling box. To stop this commercial mail would be to hamper commerce and that is not good for the economy. If I was still living in the Detroit/Windsor area, I would have been glad to assist him with even more commercial offers such as the ones you get when you fill out contest ballots, grocery store fidelity cards, Scientology courses, new drug inquiries, ie Rogaine, store comment cards etc. You could possibly go on to utter threats in his name, which would open him up to more offers, but I am not so sure about the legality of that, so I wouldn't advise anyone to do that as IANAL.
If something important accidentally gets tossed way, then he should have been more careful.
Communism was founded by Marx in Vienna.
Wow, you learn so much stuff on Slashdot. I thought that Marx did his work in London. Damn me an not paying attention in European history.
I got a spam from Nigeria in my work address. I work in the federal government in a department that is part of the legal system of the country. I was intrigued as getting millions of dollars for a short-term investment seemed too good to be true. I replied asking for more information and if the people interested could meet me in Canada, preferably at my office as I am busy at night, but they didn't respond.
My 10 year-old godson loves Atari 2600 games. I installed Stella on his P200. He isn't geeky,, but he loves River Raid, Keystone Kops, Crackpots and the one with the teeth. He really seems drawn to the Activision roms. He would have been able to have my 2600 unit except that an ex of mine sold it off at a garage sale in 1992. An ex for a reason, let me tell you...
Anyhow, he's getting one of those portable units, and I hope he likes it as much as I liked my games.

I ordered one from an Avon catalogue. No one in my office was more surprised than me that I ordered something from an Avon catalogue. I also ordered lipstick and eyeliner because umm I wanted that too.
I haven't used my French version of Windows since 95, so I don't remember everythingm but the one thing I found strange was the help menu was ? instead of something more appropriate like Assistance.
What's the help menu like with other European languages? Hilfe oder ? auf deutsch?
Get Expressvu instead. You don't want English, don't order English. You don't want French, don't order French. It is annoying to have to pay for CNN to get BBC World though.
Some mother's engineers...

Thanks for letting me rant!
That's being generous to Metallica.
Wow! I get to be the language police but in another language. Try Ce n'est pas vrai!

And then there are people in New Brunswick & Newfoundland who aren't even in states (except of boredom).

The above ad was paid for by the taxpayers of Canada. :)
