    I believe in private sector competition. However, the government should be allowed to compete (fairly) when the private sector are slackers.

    Why should citizens have to suffer because the phone companies are slackers with an un-serviceable amount of debt?

    Some of the cities here in Utah have 100 megabit service to their residents for dirt cheap...

    I use mplayer with the -vf lavcdeint option and -vo xv. It looks quite good.

    Unfortunately, mplayer only works with broadcast HDTV.

    For example, shockwave. Active X. Microsoft's Outlook used to default to a RTF attachment standard which Netscape couldn't read.

    MS Access files are useless. As are Photoshop files. Quicktime & Windows Media videos are often not usable.

    People need to design their documents and content in a way that they can be used on any computer.

    What makes its compression better? I thought that they didn't define any kind of standard for a codec, which practically guarantees incompatibility problems forever.

    This is the most exciting kernel release ever. Some of these drivers have been out there for years when they really need to get into Linus' kernel ASAP.

    Now let's get the intel wireless drivers, pvr250, CLE266, etc.

    By the time "they" shut off analog TV signals, cheap receivers will be available that can receive the digital signal and output to RF, Composite, S-Video, etc. They are already available, but they probably aren't $25 yet.

    Actually, I think you can get a used Voom receiver and use that for OTA digital TV... those are going for dirt right now.

    What exactly does it mean to be un-American anyway? As opposed to being un-Norwegian or something?

    The whole theory behind privatisation is that it is supposed to take care of problems better than the government can. However, when it comes to technical innovation such as the Internet, local communities should step in and take care of the problem when private companies fail to innovate. Obviously, they must do it in a way that allows private business to compete.

    It isn't good for the government to prop up business such as Qwest by granting them monopoly rights to offering phone or internet service.

    You have no idea what you're talking about... it cost the same as DirecTV.

    At first you couldn't lease the equipment, which was a problem at first. The real problem was a lack of Tivo. I have both Voom and DirecTV and I only use Voom for The Tennis Channel.

    Compression is a big problem. It seem that every new sound format is more convenient; at the expense of quality.

    I would like to see 24 bit, 96 KHz sound everywhere or maybe even an improved analog sound format. 256k mp3's are great for streams or trying out a new band but I am not going to pay for it.

    It is ridiculous to realize how much interesting programming there is in the rest of the world that we still can't watch here.

    There should be some sort of fair use that would allow citizens to stream channels that are for whatever reason not broadcast here.

    The old cliche:

    Good judgment comes from experience. Experience comes from bad judgment.

    Assuming that your application can run on one machine to start with, you will just need to make sure you have enough bandwidth and enough machine power so you don't have to worry about those details right away. Be ready to hack things to make your application scale better, that is probably the most difficult thing to prepare for. If this is a one person job, you probably want to have a hosting company that will do the hand holding necessary to keep things secure.

    Don't screw around with cheap hardware - make sure you have multiple CPU's, RAID 10, dual power supplies, and a backup machine with a copy of everything.

    To put in my $.02, we have a dozen servers with > 500 gigabytes each on 7500's and above. They are wonderful controllers, I am going to get one for my home Mythtv box here Real Soon Now.

    You can get a relatively slow 5800 for under $50, which should perform better than software RAID. For a little more, you can get a screamingly fast 64 bit PCI card.

    These allow Raid 0, 1, 5, 10, and have great Linux support including a daemon to fiddle with the settings and the option of a hot swap drive bay.

    You have to start somewhere! I'll bet this platform will last quite awhile, especially if there are new features popping up all the time.

    I'll bet that a USB nic will work nicely in the meantime.

    Will Doom 3 work with any 3d cards that have open source drivers? I am tired of nvidia and ATI. I had an i845G which rocked but probably doesn't have enough power.

    I am going to build a new PC for doom 3 and myth, so now is the time to find a good video card.

    I was at a computer show in the late 80's trying to help someone add a second 20 megabyte drive to their system.

    Unfortunately, as a drive installer I had the keystrokes to low level format drive C: so ingrained in my head that I selected the wrong drive and nuked their entire backup-less computer.

    Needless to say, I learned the hard way that you should always do backups and disconnect drives that have valuable data.
