Software vendors pay Dell et al to put crippled versions of their software on Windows PC's. Part of the reason for an increased cost of a Windows-free PC is the lack of these subsidies.
There is already a model for what people will pay - Pay Per View.
The quality had better be as good as or better than DVD, however (choosable by the user). Unfortunately, the typical internet media is actually lower quality than what it replaces.
LivePhish.com did a great job of offering a choice of either mp3 (lossy) or flac (exact CD quality). flac cost a few bucks extra.
The FCC still has a useful role to play in setting standards.
However, they have become a force for censorship and actually limit access to media rather than enable more of it. It should be possible to get any channel from anywhere in the world, with good quality. There should also be thousands of TV and radio stations in every market, rather than the feeble number we have currently.
There are some channels where I'll pay to not have commercials and some where I won't.
Ideally, it should be a choice on every channel. For example, to keep the times in sync they could offer a more expensive alternate channel where all of the commercials are pushed to the end of the time slot and the show is shown commercial free followed by the same set of commercials.
This is the beginning of total DRM

The inability of consumers to mix and match components will make it much easier to require DRM, particularly if it is impossible to use standard analog speakers.
I have been using the Gigabyte 6800 fanless for a few weeks now (replaced a jet engine sounding 6600GT). I don't notice much difference in performance (I mostly play WoW at 1280x720).
Many local restaurants and such have free wifi - which includes a few posters around the building for the ISP. I'll bet you can find a similar arrangement with someone there.
To create more stations. The FM/AM dials are limited and it is expensive to start a new station. Why don't we have a standardized technology that will allow 10000 stations in every area? That would lower the price dramatically - once that happens nobody would care about payola.
Most companies purposefully choose short retention policies, in an attempt to avoid these kinds of settlements... it isn't a sysadmin's fault.
The theory was that this would let them discard old emails without having it be intentional obstruction of justice. I guess that theory will be out the window now.
Perhaps yearly. One of the big problems with copyrights is that tracking down the owner of a 50 year old work that you want to use... perhaps every work should have a unique ID and cost, say, $10 or something.
Dry ice is used extensively by professional marijuana growers. They also use a lot of extra power for their lamps.
You will probably go onto the government's terrorist watch list if you are using dry ice to cool a computer that is sucking down too many watts of power.

Having to choose between a one-party US Government and the UN is like having to choose which testicle to cut off with a rusty knife.

If they had support for high definition without copy protection, this should hopefully become the worldwide standard.
No MythTV, they just had some weird Microsoft product. Also, their motherboards did not seem to have an S/PDIF connector. Also, it was not hi def.
My HTPC uses an Asus P4P800-VM, with a pchdtv.com hi def tuner. I have MythTV installed, though I use bit torrent + mplayer a lot more.
Unfortunately, I spent a LOT more time playing World of Warcraft than playing media. (Cedega rocks)

Microsoft didn't play fair with an "unauthorized" technology - surprise, surprise.
Just wait until there are actual Mono users, it will only get worse.
The hard core wow addicts I know have cut their video game spending considerably.
Now they are spending all their disposable income on Doomhammer gold from ebay.
I have a 6600GT and it is nice, but I think I am going to get a Gigabyte 6600 256MB because it is apparently fanless.
My computers sounds like a jet engine.
ID does such a good job of making Linux releases - what will it take for you to do the same?
I am glad to help out the Cedega folks, but it would be nicer to not have to use a band-aid.
The main purpose of a bureaucracy is to keep themselves in existance by making the problem they were trying to solve worse.
For a better example, see the War on Drugs.

Time changes are ridiculous in the first place.
Why are they wasting their time with a new initiative when most of their existing products are not usable on Linux?
I still can't create flash content on Linux; and I can't even use shockwave applets.
If you have a 2 year old, you really are better off with a CRT that you can clean easily.
There is this device that people have for containing things that are valuable - it is called a "wallet".
I write down my passwords and keep them there until I have them memorized. It is really 1337!
where are my moderator points when I need them.

That would be much more useful... if each socket connection does a key exchange. Much harder for your ISP to snoop.
Amazing how familiar this seems. Almost as if it had been on Slashdot yesterday.
