    I think we're assuming that since he's smart enough to write Linux, he's smart enough not to want to sell out the planet to Big Oil. I know it's presumptuous, but I give all seemingly smart people the same benefit of the doubt.

    I think what's surprising is that two large planets were able to form by themselves outside of a large solar system. I'm guessing they didn't expect it was possible for two bodies of that size to have had the gravity required to form based on our current models of planet formation.

    Yeah. Frankly mass transit sucks over here. There are a large cities like New York, Boston, and Chicago with good transit, but they are the exception. I'm in San Diego right now, 8th largest city in the US, and its mass transit is pretty weak for anyone outside of downtown.

    Did you ever hear of genetic algorithms? They are based exactly on this "misconception" and are commonly used in technology to correctly solve problems and create artifacts of lasting value.

    I'm just giving you a hard time. I agree with your comments, just found it odd that you would use genetic algorithms as an example instead of the related process that brought about the planet as we know it

    That's what I was thinking. If the IO call returns as soon as the data is written to the flash , then that data sure as hell should be on the disk somewhere. Keeping what is basically a disk cache on the system board sounds like a terrible idea to me.

    Right, or the earth really. Isn't the earth after all primarily bound together by gravity? The Sand of the desert or the ocean's aren't any more bound to the earth than the atmosphere.

    The thing we don't understand about black holes is the singularity itself. The observable behavior of the black hole is mostly understood and I think that is what is being simulated. The stuff that is truly mysterious is hidden away within the event horizon.

    No, it's true that their is a great monetary cost of for having someone executed as well. The reason is because of the huge legal costs of all the appeals prior to the execution.

    That's not true. It would usually be illegal to install a camera in your own bathroom as well. Even in someone else's house there is a reasonable expectation of privacy in the bathroom.

    If the officer's request is later found to be illegal you can sue, but it's best to do what the officer says to avoid legal headaches.
    I don't get it. If a police officer asks you not to do something that you have every legal right to do and you comply, on what grounds can you later sue them? Just asking you to do something isn't illegal, it's only illegal when they overstep their authority and try to press charges if you don't comply. Is that not correct?

    Sure, the people responsible should definatly not get a slap on the wrist, but "wound the police force for years to come"? That's just stupid. Despite the occasional examples of corruption such as this, the police are for the most part there to help people. Do you seriously want to hinder the police's ability to quickly arrive at the scene of an accident or respond to a crime in progress just to punish the ones responsible for this overstep? That's called cutting off your nose to spite your face.

    This won't help because light behaves as both a particle and a wave, depending on how you are observing it.
    From Wikipedia:
    when the particle could be passing through either of the two slits, it will actually pass through both, and so an interference pattern results. But if the particle is detected at one of the two slits, then it can no longer be passing through both - it must exist at one or the other, and so no interference pattern appears.

    Sorry to be ambiguous. I meant making machines that are intelligent would be useful, I didn't mean it would be useful for them to be self-aware.

    I can't imagine any benefit to having a machine that is self-aware. At the very least it brings all sorts of moral issues into play. Regardless, if you make a machine smart enough, you can't really avoid it being self-aware, so we will just have to make do.

    - LD and VHS work great.

    True, but DVD was much more convenient than both. VHS had to be rewound, tapes are fragile and wear out. LD were freaking huge and plus, hardly anyone had them so they are barely worth mention. What improvement to the users experience does Blu-Ray provide?

    From what I remember, most people thought they would take, the question was just how long it would take.

    True for any new piece of equipment. Over time however, entropy wins out and everything needs to be replaced. If the new format had any merit, people would consider upgrading then. If not they'll stick with what works.

    Self awareness is a side effect of general intelligence. We can't make it yet, but when we can it will be useful.

    We use touch to determine when we are putting enough pressure on an egg to pick it up. Why wouldn't it work for a robot?
