It's been a long time since I've been on a cruise ship, but I remember a very dark spot on the front of the ship late at night. I saw a lot of stars there, don't remember if I saw the milky way or not though.
The governments should just make dark skies a part of their environmental platform. Light pollution is wasted energy. If the light goes where it's needed people will use less energy and you get darker skies for free.
Likewise, you couldn't sell CDs for $30 each if you didn't count on at least having the option of trading them in for $10 when you're sick of them.
You can sell CDs for $30 each? Where the hell do you shop, man? The average CD goes for $20, tops. I think your resale value for them is optimistic as well. The used music shop will re-sell the album for about $10, but they offer less for it so they can make a profit.
I think you're right, but still that seems pretty damn stupid considering that the same parent can buy their kid an iMac which doesn't have any of these restrictions on what can be installed. What makes the iPhone so different from the iMac? I can't say I see it.
La Jolla is also much smaller than SF so it doesn't need as many wi-fi hotspots. There's a handful of good coffeeshops with free wi-fi and that's all you really need.
I could propose that you are also merely reactive, but based on my own experience as a sentient being I don't find that argument particularly strong.
If I am aware of perceptions than it is doubtless that you are too. And if both of us are aware than other mammalian brains that have much in common with our own brains are also very likely to have some level of awareness of their perceptions.
I think there is a flaw in your reasoning that sanctity of life should be determined by ability of expression. Or do you think that toddlers and the mentally handicap are not worth anything?
Doesn't Ubuntu have DKMS wifi drivers? All the kernel modules I use on my Mandriva system are recompiled automatically when I reboot with a new kernel.
That was MS's fault since 100% of the PC hardware on the market was originally intended to work with Windows. If Linux support for hardware devices that don't have to be reverse-engineered is still crappy under Linux than it would be equally reasonable to say the Linux developers should be able to do better.
You're right, that's a possibility. I haven't played with OpenSolaris much though, so I can't really say.
From what I know though wouldn't it be more of an example of a proprietary Unix that was open sourced instead of a community built OS? I'm not sure how much of the code base actually comes from contributors outside of Sun.
Linux is better than some Unix's in some circumstances. It is not however an inarguable matter of fact. ZFS is just one possible example where an argument could be made that Solaris is better.
On the other hand eastern religions don't tend to be exclusivistic as the Abrahamic religions are and so what they practice as Buddhism is actually a syncretism of Buddhism with whatever other religions co-existed with it in the region over the centuries. They are not so concerned about where the boundaries are between real Buddhism and the other traditional religions they have incorporated into their faith.
Still doesn't make sense. The transition from Sol8 to Sol9 was not that huge, not like the transition to Sol10 and certainly the training is nothing compared to migrating to Windows.
And what OS vendor doesn't EOL their products? Certainly not MS.
And BTW, Solaris 8 is still supported and will be for another 3 years.
That doesn't make any sense to me. Why would a business switch to a platform they have no experience with instead of just making the much simpler transition to Solaris 9?
You're free to feel how you want to feel on multi-touch interfaces, but I can't agree. And no, it's not because of Apple's marketing. Apple's marketing is all about applications anyway, isn't it? I have yet to see an add showing someone rotating a map with two fingers.

They're called roads, and the pedestrians were there first.

Ahh, I see. So that's about $24 US dollars. A bit pricey still, but much more reasonable than $30!

And some of friends or family that would help, but their pride keeps them from asking for help.

Do you know what sentience means? It's obvious from the definition.
sentience:
1. Having sense perception; conscious
2. Experiencing sensation or feeling.
What possible reason would you have for wanting to avoid knowing this?
I think there is a flaw in your reasoning that sanctity of life should be determined by ability of expression. Or do you think that toddlers and the mentally handicap are not worth anything?
I hate to break it to you but all mammals are already sentient. Every step on an animals tail? That noise it makes is proof of its sentience.

He said "one kind of country" not "one country".
It may be useless as a phone, but it would still be useful as a koan.

I take it you've never seen a football match in the UK?

What the hell are you talking about? Netscape was based on Mosaic, a browser that was multi-architecture from the beginning.
