    Also included in the sorry mess were AIX, KShell, and X/Motif.

    Anyone who has ever worked with one of these systems knows at least one application that could not be trusted. All the MS bashing that goes on here is totally blind to how crappy any application can be on any platform and how dangerous it is to trust any one system.

    and this is the one who's alarms were fuddled. (GE-Harris Transient Recording System) according to accounts by former employees. Old unix systems are often shaky because the code is shaky.

GE-Harris Unix based custom system failed to provide usable alerts (just reams of annoying everyday warnings that operators ignore). TRS (Transient Recording System). Biggest and costliest Software F.U. in history. Guess I'll go patch my Office software.

    likewise it is hard to prove that the farmer would not have made income if one had not just given all his beans/corn away (to the needy, etc.) And it did seem that the most "traded" music was also popular music, not just the fringe stuff - which should probably be given away to gain listeners.

    It's the income that is theft/stolen (revenue) not the music/cds/files.

    It's not the same as walking out with stolen cds but it is the same as ruining some farmers crops or giving them away when the family isn't home. The hard work pays off with return that feeds the kids and that's what you steal when you napster/gnutella/morpheus/kazaa music. QED.

    multi language enviros enable reuse of existing components from other languages. It's important. It save (big) money. It's why java, even with the crappy JNI option, is not universally used. If java could easily call legacy systems without a performance (and mental health) hit, it would conquor all others.

    ...language that runs on every major and most minor platforms.

    "runs" is optimistic on some of the projects I have had to deal with. MS VC++ still beats Java hands down and can easily be written to be portable with linux/bsd gcc.
