I think that in the long run, Linux will be cheaper than M$. This is for seveal reason which I won't go into as most of you are familiar with Linux. Even so, it is good to see/know that MS will bend when put in such a position. With all the Linux news I've seen/read over the past few days, I would be surprised to see MS push out some products sooner. It looks like MS is slowly loosing its grip on the market, but then again, its looked that way for a while. Only now are we seeing them fight fire with fire.
Is there anyone on Slashdot that hangs onto Windows for anything other than games?
Work.
Yep, it's called the "Real World." Don't get me wrong: I like open source, *nix and the rest as much as the next guy, but when you work for a company, odds are it'll be M$. At home I can be as l33t as I want, but at work, you get what you get.
Cheap shot, I know. But seriously, is it really worth spending money you don't have on a product you don't need? (or a product that can be replaced in 3 different products for cheapers?)
I want a city that uses the Futurama tubes! How much fun would that be... that is until you go where you were going and relized you didn't know hot to stop. Oh, we could use cars back seats as landing cushions. Recycling at its best... or something..
And extra $150 certianly would dissuade me from buying this.. at least for some home-type project. And I can't imagine why we would need these at work. Still, the size is impressive....
The main lure for me is the size. I mean that thing is tiny! For some special project or around the house type things (i.e. an mp3 player for the front room) it could be useful. BUT, the $495.95 definately would make me thing twice about buying this over another (barebones-esque)system. Would the savings in my electric bill cause this to pay for itself over time?

Another point you missed is that the 'net is interactive. Generally speaking, the TV is just a box you stare at, while the using a computer connected to the 'net requires a, allbeit low, minimum level of thought and interaction.
Plus, if you are on the net searching for something, at least you're reading (assuming search/= looking from pr0n/music).
Find a user who is doing this illegal activity over the 'net from his dorm room. From there, confiscate their computer and then you could see if they had other folders in their 'network places.' Some of these might contain illegal files and ta-da! Prosecute the original guy and follow the network links arresting kids as you go.
Pretty soon anyone who holds a LAN party will be busted down. Anyone who advertises for them will be held in the same light as anyone who asks you to buy some crack on the street. The RIAA might just make computers illegal alltogether. I mean, why not? It would just cut out the problem... of course they'd be out of business, but that doesn't seem to bother them...
Why not just have encrypted file sharing? This would shield you from the RIAA as well as the LAN admins (hence getting them off the hook). Something like 128bit SSH should do the trick.

But it's only $21/month. With the money you save on the 'net costs, you could afford all the other insurance.
...their using sails so they'll be to the moon is 5 million years.
....the record labels are now requiring musicians to give up their first born in order to breed a new race of pop stars.
Not only is your comment flaimbait, but your site doesn't work to boot!
Like using a p2p so the *IAA doesn't know who I am?

LOL!!1 me too!!11
...M$ is going to shut itself down (and hotmail, etc)? That would reduce a good aount of spam.
....loose money.

Well, once people figured out they can go to thier friends house to downlaod pr0n, there was no need to get thier own service.
In fact, with just a bit of googling, I found How to Share Files Using Encrypting File System.
Perhaps they could do this:
Find a user who is doing this illegal activity over the 'net from his dorm room. From there, confiscate their computer and then you could see if they had other folders in their 'network places.' So does this mean that if I use this process for my MB and put a notoriously hot AMD chip in it, it'll re-melt the paste?
"No, seriously guys, my computer is bleeding to death."
Farewell, Farscape. Maybe SciFi will pick up Enterprise eventually (what, with its falling ratings on UPN and all).
If it wasn't for MST3K, there would be no reason to turn to SciFi anymore.
[comicbookstoreguy] Worst post ever [/comicbookstoreguy]
For the record, it's "Worst episode ever." (which still would apply here)
Simpsons geek extrordiare, at your service.
...Teflon. Sure it would be a little slippery (when wet), but hey, it would outlast the elements.
Cooler images? Maybe. Scary looking guy on index page? Definately.
