Just to nit-pick, you mean "the direction of movement". Velocity also implies the magnitude as well as the direction, and I don't see why we need to bring magnitude into the argument.
No? This may come as a surprise to you, but you are accelerating right now. In two directions at once, to be precise. I suggest you walk off a cliff to experience one of these accelerations. Maybe you will learn something about basic physics and vectors on the way down. The point of reference for "down" in this case being the center of the earth.
This sounds wrong to me too, the probe isn't speeding up backwards, it's slowing down.
ie. Speeding up in the direction opposite to current velocity - especially if your frame of reference is the object. Humanities majors should not be allowed to post on slashdot.
Is this a fancy way of trying to get us to believe that acceleration is NOT a vector? Please define "context". Also considering that the definition of deceleration is acceleration in a direction opposite to velocity or even "negative acceleration" with the negative just being a flag for "the other way, dummy", I would say that your whole argument is on pretty shaky ground. If acceleration doesn't need your undefined, mystical "context" then neither does deceleration. Why don't you let real nerds do the nerding so you can avoid those headaches?
Microsoft Research thinks that with remote sensor networks, encryption, and other safety measures, lack of physical security won't be an issue.
Well now I feel much better. Microsoft says that security won't be a problem. What a relief! For a moment there I was worried. Now I can ponder this new definition of "free" coming from Redmond. Is that free as in cracked Windows Activation or free as in after you pay for the installation and the monthly maintenance fee free?
Why is everyone trying to change the landscape in ways that set us back twenty five years?
Because everything old is new again. When the internet first became popular with the plebs in the 1990's, there was talk of making everything net aware and net enabled, from desktops to televisions to your toaster. Now with mobile phones having the computing power of the desktops of 5 years ago, the new buzz is thinking that computers will be replaced by mobile devices. Of course this is completely untrue, mobiles fit their particular niche very well but will never have the horsepower to compete with a laptop much less a desktop. And the communications companies will be damned if they make the same mistake they made with household internet with no limits on the amount of data transferred - this time you are going to pay through the nose for those mega/gigabytes, making the whole "browser on a mobile" concept dead on arrival unless you just want to check your text emails...
It's the typical "we want a federal grant" spiel. It will cut your grass for you and cure cancer, as well as produce cheap reliable clean energy. Of course there's no logistical problems involved in keeping plants at the optimal temperature, watering them, etc. Nah, some dufus in a lab coat who has never seen a vegetable outside a supermarket said "hey, we could probably grow plants there too".
Of course it would make a hell of a gnomon for a giant desert sundial. That would keep future archaeologists guessing for quite a while. Just to fuck everyone up they should align the doors with compass directions.
One of the pictures for example shows a classroom. In many countries it is illegal to publish or broadcast pictures of minors without the explicit consent of the parents. Not civil illegal. Criminal illegal. That's just one possibility. Not to mention that this software takes pictures randomly or at 20 minute intervals. I am sure the owner of the machine has not obtained permission from anyone who happens to be in the background or explained the whole process to them. Nor are any of those people obtaining any benefit from having their picture involuntarily published on the internet. Nor are all these pictures in a public place where it has been argued ONLY in the US that they have "no reasonable expectation of privacy".
Finally if you need legislation in order to distinguish between right and wrong, then you are a highly unethical person by nature.
What about all the other people in the photos. Did they agree to be spied on too, or can the owner of the machine waive their rights for them too? This is a highly unethical project and MIT should be ashamed of having their name associated with it.
Still doesn't make it ethical and it's questionably legal depending on local laws. Some terrorist organizations offer to pay the families of suicide bombers a fair amount of cash if they blow themselves up. These people agree. Does that make it legal and ethical?
For the same reason everyone else tries to work a little harder and be a little better, be it in the construction industry, the retail industry, the service industry, and any other industry you care to mention. Monopoly encourages laziness, greed and entitlement. An idea for a product design alone should not be used as a club to beat a competitor who possibly offers far better service, distribution, quality, etc. If all we cared about was the bottom line and the price, then we'd all be eating at McDonald's. When you go to a nice restaurant you might consume the same amount of calories and pay far more per calorie. But if you don't see the difference between a candle-lit table and highly trained waiters and a room full of screaming children - not to mention the quality of the food, then I feel for you.
Yeah you have to wonder where they get their ideas. Most Americans think that here in Central America we live in huts and grass skirts in the jungle. I can imagine that they believe China to be on par with the Soviet Union in 1930. They don't realize that the Chinese middle class will soon be far larger than the entire population of the United States. That the number of extremely wealthy Chinese will exceed the population of some of the larger states. That the country with the largest English-speaking population in the world will soon be China.
Who the heck then will invest for capital intensive research like medicine and semi-conductor fab tech?
Perhaps you're looking at it backwards. With patents out of the picture, there will be a need to do things much, much cheaper and innovation will drive towards increasing efficiency rather than how to protect your monopoly. I love it when the drug argument is used regarding patents. I just answer sarcastically: yeah, because acetyl salicylic acid (more commonly known as Aspirin) which has been out of patent since forever is a real money-loser. You will never find generic/store brand painkillers containing this product. Here ends the sarcasm. Pharmacy companies complain about all the billions it takes to make a new drug and fail to mention that drugs still sell long after the patents expire. It's not like Lipitor has been pulled from the shelves (patent just expired recently). Yeah there's competition - so what? For every Coke there's a Pepsi, for every McDonalds there's a Burger King. Suck it up and earn your money like everyone else.
& can teach us a thing or two about how to co-exist with others like ourselves, in peaceful cooperation, instead of wars & such
Why would a creature nothing at all like us have the faintest idea, let alone interest in, how to teach us about ourselves? It's like me trying to teach my dog to be a dog. It doesn't work. I can train her. I can correct her. I can reward her. But she will always be what she was born to be, and she will always have the urge to strain at the leash to play with other dogs she sees on the street.
It seems to me that you're looking for the magical beard in the sky here - the wise old man that will make everything better for you. If I may be so bold, why don't you grow up, stop worrying about everyone else, and make your own life better. Stop being an asshole, treat people with respect, and think about what you do. If everyone did this instead of just being selfish and not giving a shit, then the world would be a better place. However it's not, and I don't give a shit, and when you die can I have your stuff?
where the vector "something" is often "velocity"
Just to nit-pick, you mean "the direction of movement". Velocity also implies the magnitude as well as the direction, and I don't see why we need to bring magnitude into the argument.

Acceleration however doesn't need context.

They are marginally more useful than posts pointing out how useless they are.

I agree. Magic power of 10 spotted. Why isn't it 9.8% or 11.3%?

aka paralysis by analysis.
I'll see your doctorate and raise you 30 publications.
Save the spotted lizard!
Nah they'll just pump it in with a 200MW set of pumps oh wait...
And the water will just appear in the middle of the desert by magic, right?

And I bet the project will be scrapped due to budget cuts long before it's ever launched.

Correct. I can prove that cutting off people's head is 100% fatal with an extremely small sample. In fact I'd like to start with GP.
You're correct, and the summary is wrong. Meninges and blood vessels have pain fibers but brain tissue does not.
We well peak verb and are slow to oblivion.
