          Sure, and just have planes crash when the computer can't handle a situation - eg flight 1549.

          Fully automated flying is a _BAD IDEA_ for passenger jets. Yes an autopilot helps with the tedium of long distance level flight. However you need the pilots there for the emergency scenario. And AFAIK, pilots still take off and land manually.

          The French have tried to build sophisticated computer software to automate as much as the flying as possible in their Airbus planes, and these systems work well most of the time. However when they fail, they usually fail catastrophically. Would you like to die just because the computer encountered a problem it wasn't smart enough to work through? I always want a guy up there who's able to hit the "OFF" switch, and take over. Even if it doesn't work, at least it's an extra back up system and was worth a shot.

    "are inhibiting developing nations from enjoying productive use of the internet -- like online banking and market tools."

    There are different levels of development, you know. Do you really think that someone who is starving and has no idea what a computer is for (apart from the kids who play starcraft in internet cafes) needs online banking? What, are those banks starting to accept cows, goats and chickens as deposits? Does a bank really cares about those whole $50 the village managed to save last year? You can pay someone to stand in line for you at the bank, and they will gladly stand there all day for a dollar. And then you think they will open an account? No, that dollar is going straight to the liquor store... or whatever vice is fashionable in their neighborhood.

    I LIVE in the "developing world" and know whereof I speak. Those who have money - those who drive the economies, even of these small or poor countries, can afford internet at any price, by satellite or whatever. But Poor Joe Average, well no, he can't afford the internet. And he'd have no idea what to do with it. There's a whole learning curve him and the rest of the population have to go through. But learning takes time and money, and if you're on the verge of starvation, you don't HAVE time and money. You keep doing what you always did.

    Lack of internet is not "holding people back". Lack of EDUCATION is, education to get them more productive at whatever it is they do, more efficient, less wasteful of time and resources. THEN they start making money. However someone is still going to have to sew your bras and socks and shirts, someone is going to have to poison himself in the factory making cheap goods for the "developed world", and someone is always going to have to be on the bottom. Though exactly who gets to be on the bottom changes from time to time... kinda like sex.

THEY have decided to shift everything to consoles, because consoles "can't be pirated". They are middlemen that often add little value to software, and yet expect EVERYONE (devs AND consumers) to dance to their tune.

    It's the 21st century. If Steam/Gamersgate/whoever can sell me a game online as a download and/or as a boxed set, ANY developer can. Every OS successor ever written by Microsoft (except perhaps MS-DOS 5.0) has 1) required faster hardware, greater memory and has delivered 2) The same or inferior performance. It's not all _bad_, Microsoft does tend to add some bells and whistles. However these are hard to justify (eg: why the FUCK does my Microsoft Keyboard driver consist of 80 MEGABYTES?) - especially when now most of those bells and whistles involve "protecting" the user (and especially Hollywood) from "pirated software"... or trying to dance around huge holes in the OS' security by spamming the user every 5 mins so that their legal team can turn around and say "if your machine got infected, it had to be YOUR fault".

    Not only that, but consider this:

          The gun barrel is 1100m long. The velocity of the projectile, as it leaves the barrel, is 6m/s.

          Using the equations of motion:

          s = 1/2(u + v)t

          1100m = 1/2(0 + 6000m/s)t
          1100m = (3000m/s)t
          t = 1100m/3000m/s = 0.367 seconds.

          To find out the acceleration:

          v = u + at
          6000m/s = 0 + a(0.367s)
          6000m/s / 0.367s = a
          16348m/s^2 = a

          g = roughly 10m/s^2 (ok ok 9.8)

          So your projectile has to be engineered to survive 1635 g's for a third of a second while blasted out of this gun. I'm not taking into account any heat - generated by gases or friction along the gun barrel, either. Now apart from rocks, exactly WHAT functional stuff do they plan on hurling into space with this?

          I call BS - or an attempt at getting free grant money...
