My dad got me one of those Slashdot shirts over at Think Geek at Comdex, and got Rob and Jeff to sign it. It's pretty cool, and this being Slashdot, maybe I ought to start a bidding war on it at ebay....... : )
And speaking of shirts, thinkgeek also has some cool S lashdot Fleece's but for $60, I don't think I'll be buying it.
I strongly believe that CD audio caught on not because it produced better quality audio than cassettes.... because of the improved Fast Forward / Rewind speed
That's my favorite part of CD's. I personally don't give a crap about sound, as long as it's not super "staticy". MP3's sound the same to me as CD's, and radio is perfectly fine for me too. I'm sure the DVD-Audio would sound better, but I already know there would by no way I'd ever notice the difference.
Well yes, but my point was just because they are from the industry doesn't make them automatically good teachers. I've had plenty of horrible teachers who went to college to be teachers.
Yes, I've heard it straight out of our super-intendents mouth. Well, I admit, I sorta twisted his words, he said that academics were the most important thing at school, so that would place it above athletics.
And we are doing something about the network problem. The computer club made some money on a school wide fund-raiser, so we are paying for hubs and cable (the computers already have NIC's). We do have to pay for it out of the money we earned, but at least it's happening.
It happens I'm sure, but just because someone does post a pro-MS comment doesn't make them spies of Microsoft. I myself use and like a lot of Microsoft products, and do defend againt the FUD/. spreads about them, but I do not work for MS in any way what-so-ever. I love Linux too, but that doesn't mean I hate MS. I'm sure there are Linux zombies who go to other boards saying how much Linux rules, but in the Linux world, you can't get paid for it or have someone order you to do it. But that doesn't mean it doesn't get done.
If we did that, no one would learn. Only a few are motivated enough to learn on their own, the rest would just play Nintendo all day. And even those who were motivated would just learn what they wanted, not neccasarly what they needed to know (as in basic grammar skills, that the moon isn't made of cheese). You say it never helped you, but wouldn't you laugh at someone if they couldn't name the first president of the US? No, your plan would never work.
That's a good idea, except that just because they work in the industry doesn't make them good teachers. Being a teacher is more than just knowing the stuff, you have to know how to communicate it to the students and help them. I've had teachers who were supposed to be excellent in their field, but they couldn't teach worth crap. But I guess if it's that or not having that class at all, I'd take a person straight from the industry.
spend more money on actually doing the educational things instead of just going for the other things that are non academic
I whole heartly agree. Just last week, the student body (actually, just the girls) voted to see if they would like to form a flag football league for girls. WTF? That has absolutly no redeaming value, you can't even have a chance of getting paid for that or getting a scholorship off of it. And yet they find the money to make this league, but we can't even network our damn computers together. Or my Web Design class gets 20 PIII 450, 128 MB RAM Dell computers, and the most CPU intensive app we use is Word (not to mention the teacher is absolutly horrible). Meanwhile, the CS classes work on Pentium 90's with 16 MB of RAM, with no plans to upgrade or even network the existing computers. And this is at a "rich" school, I've been to poorer schools, and it's even more pathetic there.
The school board always says academics is more important than athletics, but they don't back it up with money or support. I don't see any academic pep-rallys...
Of course in those days, computer science teachers were math teachers with a bit of spare time in their daily schedule
That's still basically the same way today. At both of the high schools I went/go to, they almost had to cut the higher level CS classes because they couldn't find anyone to teach them. Fortunatly, someone always came through in the nick of time. A lot of the students know more than the teacher. Plus, CS is put under the math department, so that means we get jack squat in funding.
Yea, I noticed that, but did anyone look at the computer screens in that big government Y2K center? I could have sworn they were running Gnome. Or maybe I was just halucinating.
I've read something about that, where people would cause the power to go out because they all have to turn on all their appliances and stuff at Midnight, which than causes the power to go out because of overload. Same way with phones.
Yes, the numbers are very low, but regardless, it does hurt the Linux community. Heck, when I was deciding whether to install Linux or not, I was quite put off by the blantent MS bashing and hatred toward them. I'm not saying you have to like MS, but when you call someone a **** **** (etc etc) for even mentioning they use Windows, you do not get them to go to Linux. Yes, they are a minority, but a very vocal minority. A few bad apples can ruin the barrel. I've written an essay on it that you can read here, that is written from my past experiance and fustrations with Linux zealots.
Or maybe because they don't think enough people will buy the Linux version, so it's not worth the cost of the boxes or shipping it to the store. Think logically before you flame Microsoft.
My dad is at Comdex right now, and he's been emailing me about 3 times a day telling what he is doing. He seems to be having a blast, and has picked up A BUNCH of stuff for me and the rest of my family. He has 22 shirts at last count, at least 5 of them Linux shirts, then he's buying two Slashdot shirts, one of them with Rob and Jeff's autograph:-) He wondering how the heck he's going to get all this stuff home. Now, I'll either be the coolest guy at school, that, or else the nerdiest:-) I really wish I didn't have school, and was over 18. Comdex would be the best vacation I ever had.
He's very computer literate, at least in Windows, so he knows that games wouldn't fsck up our system. It's weird, yes, but I guess until I get a laptop as a graduation present for college, I'm stuck with no games. I do have a N64, PSX, and DC to tide over most of my gaming needs though. But there are just some games that the computer does better.

The Playstation II is not a real "computer".
Well, that was an attempt to be slightly modest, but all well. Her clit.
I doubt they mean for Windows to crash. It just happens.
Yea, it's true. Every story had someone talking about Natalie Portmans um, thing? and so they just stopped them. The story is here.
Well yes, but my point was just because they are from the industry doesn't make them automatically good teachers. I've had plenty of horrible teachers who went to college to be teachers.
academics is more important than athletics
I doubt anyone says that
Yes, I've heard it straight out of our super-intendents mouth. Well, I admit, I sorta twisted his words, he said that academics were the most important thing at school, so that would place it above athletics.

Well, here is one word that was positive, but is now negative is most of the populations eyes: hacker.
It's positive in the eyes of Slashdot or other nerds/geeks, but the average person confuses hackers with crackers, and so hackers are the bad guys.
IRC is a barren wasteland of spammers and idiots
Real life is full of idiots, and tons of ads (aka spam). I don't see how IRC is any different, other than a lot more people want to have sex with you.

I will... Actually, not this one, but whatever they got in the spring.

The 2 is even. An odd day is where every digit is odd.

Ack! I guess I forgot to close a tag or something. The link is here
In case anyone wants to view his keynote speech, it can be found at PC Week's website under the Monday tab. Good speech IMHO.
